In this paper, we have employed printing technologies to print resonant circuit and detection circuit for an amplitude modulation system (AM radio), which consist of a printed inductor, capacitor, resistor and diode on plastic foils for using as an AM radio circuit. To test the printed inductor, capacitor, resistor and diode as components of AM radio, we selected 640 KHz, the strongest AM frequency in Sunchon City, Korea and monitored the audio signal by replacing each components by printed one.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals are composed of five important waves: P, Q, R, S, and T. Sometimes, a sixth wave (U) may follow T. Q, R, and S are grouped together to form the QRS-complex. Detection of these waves is a vital step in ECG signal analysis to extract hidden patterns. Many prior studies have focused only on detection of the QRS-complex, because P and T waves are sparse and harder to isolate from the signal. In this paper, we develop an algorithm to detect all five waves - P, Q, R, S, and T in ECG signals using wavelet transformation. The accuracy for P wave detection is 99.5%, 99.8% for QRS complex, and 99.2% for T waves.

Starbucks coffee shops have been spread rapidly and widely all over the world, which implies that there may be diffusive powers among them and thus can be represented as social networks. In particular, the spreading speed of Starbuck Korea was at record levels. In this paper, we constructed social networks using the information about Starbuck Korea (ex. latitude and longitude of each Starbucks store in Korea, the opening date of them, opening orders of them, etc.) and evaluated influence scores of each store to measure the spreading power of Starbucks in Korea. Here, we proposed two network evaluation models, Dynamic Influence Model and Static Influence Model. Through these models, we can represent location based social networks and evaluate each node's diffusive power for expanding the size of networks and for spreading coverage all over the network.

This paper presents a semiautomatic method for the identification of immunohistochemical (IHC) staining in digitized samples. The user trains the system by selecting on a sample image some typical positive stained regions that will be used as a reference for the construction of a distance metric. In this learning process, the global optimum is obtained by induction employing higher polynomial terms of the Mahalanobis distance, extracting nonlinear features of the IHC pattern distributions. The results of the proposed method showed a high correlation to a pathologist's manual analysis, which was used as a golden standard, presenting a more robust discrimination between stained and non-stained areas with little bias. © 2009 IEEE.

Active modeling is required in learning settings to cope with the dynamic evolution of the knowledge, since learners competences evolves over time as they participate in the course activities. Moreover, one of the main issues in a competence based eLearning process is to deliver personalized instructional designs adjusted to both 1) intrinsic characteristics of users (i.e. learning styles) and 2) the desired and achieved competences in the learning process (i.e. specific and generic competences). This delivery includes the adaptation of the content and the activities in a learning scenario based on a dynamic user model that evolves according to user interactions. In this paper, an approach to support Conditional Plans Generation (IMS Learning Designs) in the context of a virtual learning environment is presented. The process is supported by a pervasive usage of standards and specifications (IMS family of specifications) in conjunction with an integral user modeling.

Changes of ICP waveform morphology are characterized with different patients' states like hypertension, hydrocephalus and traumatic brain injury etc. Morphological clustering and analysis of ICP pulse (MOCAIP) approach is recently developed to extract ICP morphology feature, in which hierarchical clustering is used to extract the dominated pulse. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of using principle component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA) to extract dominated pulse. The comparative study among clustering, PCA and ICP based approaches shows that PCA approach may be an alternative of clustering approach to extract dominated pulse in a faster fashion when dataset is of large size.

There is a growing body of experimental evidence suggesting that the Ca2+ signaling in ventricular myocytes is characterized by a high gradient near the cell membrane and a more uniform Ca2+ distribution in the cell interior [1]--[7]. An important reason for this phenomenon might be that in these cells the t-tubular system forms a network of extracellular space, extending deep into the cell interior. This allows the electrical signal, that propagates rapidly along the cell membrane, to reach the vicinity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), where intracellular Ca2+ required for myofilament activation is stored [1], [8]--[11]. Early studies of cardiac muscle showed that the t-tubules are found at intervals of about 2 lm along the longitudinal cell axis in close proximity to the Z-disks of the sarcomeres [12]. Subsequent studies have demonstrated that the t-tubular system has also longitudinal extensions [9]--[11], [13].

The aim of this paper is to propose an impulsive controller which is to guarantee the asymptotic synchronization of the master and slave chaotic systems. The impulsive controller is derived on the basis of the Lyapunov theory and the linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the main results.

Background: Gene regulation is a key mechanism in higher eukaryotic cellular processes. One of the major challenges in gene regulation studies is to identify regulators affecting the expression of their target genes in specific biological processes. Despite their importance, regulators involved in diverse biological processes still remain largely unrevealed. In the present study, we propose a kernel-based approach to efficiently identify core regulatory elements involved in specific biological processes using gene expression profiles. Results: We developed a framework that can detect correlations between gene expression profiles and the upstream sequences on the basis of the kernel canonical correlation analysis (kernel CCA). Using a yeast cell cycle dataset, we demonstrated that upstream sequence patterns were closely related to gene expression profiles based on the canonical correlation scores obtained by measuring the correlation between them. Our results showed that the cell cycle-specific regulatory motifs could be found successfully based on the motif weights derived through kernel CCA. Furthermore, we identified co-regulatory motif pairs using the same framework. Conclusion: Given expression profiles, our method was able to identify regulatory motifs involved in specific biological processes. The method could be applied to the elucidation of the unknown regulatory mechanisms associated with complex gene regulatory processes. © 2009 Rhee et al;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

This paper presents the binding characteristics study of dengue non-structural protein 1 (NS1) antigen and its antibody using circular dichroism technique in far UV region. Circular dichroism (CD) is a spectroscopic technique which measures differences in the absorption of left-handed and right handed circularly polarized light. The CD spectrum can determine conformation of the NS1 antigen and its antibody, conformational changes of the antigen-antibody interaction and estimates the secondary structure of these proteins in far UV region. Firstly, CD spectrum of individual solutions of the antigen and the antibody were measured. Then, the solutions were mixed to produce a solution of complex dengue NS1 antigen and its antibody for measurement. The findings show that the antibody has the highest positive band of CD intensity follow by the complex antigen-antibody and antigen. The antibody is a chiral structure, has high helical conformation and more ordered epitope structure. Meanwhile, the NS1 antigen shows the negative and the lowest CD spectrum. The antigen is low chirality and has more random-like conformation. The complex (binding of the antigen and antibody) has the CD spectrum's shape similar to the antibody but in lower intensity. So, it has helical and beta conformations lower than the antibody. The binding characteristics of the complex solutions were also studied with increased in incubation time and with varied rotation applied. It is found that the immunoreactions between the antigen and its antibody are rapid processes which do not require too long incubation time. Besides, the applied rotation can increased the immunoreaction process.
