In November 2004 an innovative undergraduate computer engineering Technology program based on TAC of ABET program assessment criteria was granted licensure by the State Department of Higher Education. The University has considerable experience with accreditation and associated assessment activities, most recently reporting on an "Incommon Methodology for Objective- and Outcome-based programs Assessment" (Lema, L.F., Baumann, P.F., and Prusak, Z., ASEE 2005 Annual Conference) across three engineering technology programs. This study reports an assessment component within the computer engineering Technology program in accordance with ABET accreditation criteria. The implementation process was conducted in an undergraduate course in the program. The initial phase involves identification of course goals, and based on these goals, the measurable learning outcomes are formulated. Using web-based methodology and course management tools such as WebCT or Vista, the learning outcomes are measured in the form of pre- and post-course survey data from students. Data can be imported to data management tools such as Excel for analysis and evaluation. This study uses computer programs as tools to facilitate data collection and data analysis, making the data intensive portion of the assessment and evaluation process an easier endeavor. Applicability towards the assessment efforts of other engineering technology programs is also addressed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

The authors propose three strategies that are designed to enhance students' understanding and problem-solving ability in introductory mechanics courses: (1) employing multiple-method problem-solving, in which students solve a given problem using more than one method;(2) organizing systems of linear equations into a standard "tabular" format which resembles matrix format;and (3) emphasizing the discussion and use of assumptions in problem-solving activities. The authors give a rationale for each strategy, present a review of several mechanics textbooks to determine the prevalence of these strategies, and provide local student performance data that, while as yet inconclusive, suggests a possible method for assessment of the strategies' efficacy. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Current mammographic screeningfor breast cancer is less effective for younger women. To complement mammography for premenopausal women, we investigated the feasibility screening test using 98 blood serum proteins. Because the data set was very noisy and contained only weak features, we used a classifier designed for noisy data: decision fusion. Decision fusion outperformed both a support vector machine (SVM) and linear regression with forward stepwise feature selection on all three two-class classification tasks: normal tissue vs. cancer, normal tissue vs. benign lesions, and benign lesions vs. cancer. Decision fusion detected cancer moderately well (AUC=0.84 on normal vs. cancer), demonstrating promise as a screening tool. Decision fusion also detected benign lesions similarly well (AUC=0.83 on normal vs. benign lesions) and was the only classifier to achieve any success in separating benign from malignant lesions (AUC=0.64 on benign vs. cancer). The classification results suggest that the assayed proteins are more indicative of a secondary effect, such as immune response, rather than specific for breast cancer. In conclusion, the decision fusion classifier demonstrated some promise in detecting breast lesions and outperformed other classifiers, especially for the very noisy classification problem of distinguishing benign from malignant lesions. ©2007 IEEE.

The BER performances of differential and nondifferential synchronous downlink multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems that employ random spreading are studied and compared using Standard Gaussian Approximation (SGA) in AWGN channel. Furthermore, Monte-Carlo simulations were carried out to compare the BER performances of these systems in AWGN and in frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels considering a various number of interferers in the system. Various modulation schemes were considered namely, BPSK, QPSK, OQPSK, DBPSK, and DQPSK modulation schemes.

Some real problems are more naturally modeled by hybrid Bayesian networks that consist of mixtures of continuous and discrete variables with their interactions described by equations and continuous probability distributions. However, inference in such general hybrid models is hard. Therefore, existing approaches either only deal with special instances, such as Conditional Linear Gaussians (CLGs), or approximate a general model with a restricted version and then perform inference on the simpler model. However, results thus obtained highly depend on the quality of the approximations. This paper describes an importance sampling-based algorithm that directly deals with hybrid Bayesian networks constructed in the most general settings and guarantees to converge to the correct answers given enough time.

Speech act classification is an essential part of a dialogue system because it is very important to catch user's intention. The previous approaches on speech act classification were focused on obtaining high performances in a single-domain, but they did not deal with a feature interference problem that frequently rises in a multi-domain. In this paper, we propose a two-step system for speech act classification in a multi-domain. In a first step, the proposed system detects a dialogue domain associated with user's utterance. In the second step, the proposed system determines the speech act of his/her utterance based on the statistical information of the detected domain. Owing to this architecture, the proposed system show ed higher precision of 5.5% than the baseline system based on the mixed statistical information.

A (page or web) snippet is document excerpts allowing a user to understand if a document is indeed relevant without accessing it. This paper proposes an effective snippet generation method. The pseudo relevance feedback technique and text summarization techniques are applied to salient sentences extraction for generating good quality snippets. In the experimental results, the proposed method showed much better performance than other methods including Google and Naver.

This paper presents the implementation of ARQ-PROP II, a limited-depth propositional reasoner, via the compilation of its specification into an exact formulation using the satyrus platform. satyrus' compiler takes as input the definition of a problem as a set of pseudo-Boolean constraints and produces, as output, the Energy function of a higher-order artificial neural network. This way, satisfiability of a formula can be associated to global optima. In the case of ARQ-PROP II, global optima is associated to Resolution-based refutation, in such a way that allows for simplified abduction and prediction to be unified with deduction. Besides experimental results on deduction with ARQ-PROP II, this work also corrects the mapping of satisfiability into Energy minima originally proposed by Gadi Pinkas. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites offer very high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios. As a result, the aerospace industry is making a major effort to incorporate an increasing number of composite materials into various components and structures. However, machining of FRP composites is one of the most difficult and least understood areas in manufacturing technology. Thus, it is necessary to include machining and tool regimes of FRP composites into manufacturing curricula, especially at schools in regions of the country where significant aerospace industry exist. This new topic has been applied into various programs such as Machine Manufacturing Technology program at Portland Community College (PCC) and Mechanical engineering program at Washington State University Vancouver (WSUV). This report focuses on all aspects of these newly developed course materials including course content and student feedback. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

A university that develops a program with the capability to launch, chase, and recover helium-filled high-altitude balloon satellites (BalloonSats) enables a number of undergraduate research possibilities. The program faculty and the undergraduates served can also form the engine of an exciting and effective vehicle to perform K-12 outreach related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Nearly identical to weather balloons, low-weight BalloonSats can affordably carry student experiments literally to the edge of space. When the outreach effort is extended and a partnership between the university program and a K-12 classroom forms, the outreach can be transformed from a series of "fire and forget" activities into a genuine, standards-based, educational component. This paper describes the collaboration between Oregon Institute of Technology's (OIT's) BalloonSat program (LaunchOIT) and Ferguson Elementary School in Klamath Falls, Oregon (Ferguson School). LaunchOIT is an affiliate of Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium's1(OSGCs) "LaunchOregon" BalloonSat program. The paper presents some history relating to LaunchOIT, the enabling underpinnings of the OSGC, the OIT-Ferguson School collaboration structure (including some data related to student participants and performance), the benefits of the program collaboration, and how the program looks to sustain itself, particularly considering the auspices of NASA's educational mission as exercised through the National Space Grant College and Fellowship program2(Space Grant) efforts. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.
