Recently Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm has been applied to a range of problems in engineering with promising results. However, in most of the literature the standard PBIL with fixed learning rate has been used. It has been shown that when applied to dynamic environment as the one encountered in power systems, adaptive learning rate is more appropriate to use. In this paper, Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm with adaptive learning rate is used to tune the parameters of a power system controller for damping power oscillations in a multi-machine power system. The optimization of controller's parameters has been performed over pre-specified range of system operating conditions. Robustness Evaluation of the proposed controller based on eigenvalue analysis and time domain simulation shows that the proposed controller is more robust than the conventional controller over the range of operating conditions considered.

Face detection is becoming popular in surveillance applications; however, the need of enormous size face/non-face dataset, large number of features, and long training time are persistent problems. This paper claims that only a subset of the total number of features conserves the major power to detect faces; hence, this subset is capable to detect faces with high detection rate. The proposed detector fuses the results of two classifiers where one is trained with only 40 Haar-like features and the other is trained with only 50 LBP Histogram features. A pre-processing stage of skin-tone detection is applied to reduce the false positive rate. The detector is examined on real-life low-resolution surveillance sequence. Conducted experiments show that the proposed detector can achieve a high detection rate and a low false positive rate. Also, it outperforms Lienhart detector and tolerates wide range of illumination and blurring changes.

The worm experimental environment is the pivotal foundation for the worm research. Existing methods to build the environment can be classified into three categories: mathematical modeling, simulation and emulation. However, almost all of the existing methods inherently face a rigid fidelity-scalability tradeoff problem. Aming at this issue, this paper proposes a novel virtual-reality hybrid worm emulation model, which integrated the packet-level simulation and network emulation method to build worm experimental environment, for analyzing the behavior of worm propagation with respect to the changes of the network and worm characteristics. With the experiments, we analyze the impacts, induced by the network and worm characteristics on the worm propagation. The results indicate that our experimental environment can provide great support for the worm research.

This paper describes the evolution of a software testing effort during a critical period for the flagship Mars sciencelaboratory rover project at the Jet Propulsion laboratory. Formal specification for post-run analysis of log files, using a domain-specific language, LogScope, replaced scripted real-time analysis. Log analysis addresses the key problems of on-the-fly approaches and cleanly separates specification and execution. Mining the test repository suggested the inadequacy of the scripted approach, and encouraged a partly engineer-driven development. LogScope development should hold insights for others facing the tight deadlines and reactionary nature of testing for critical projects. LogScope received a JPL Mariner Award for "improving productivity and quality of the MSL Flight Software" and has been discussed as an approach for other flight missions. We note LogScope features that most contributed to ease of adoption and effectiveness. LogScope is general and can be applied to any software producing logs.

In recent years, dynamics model and control of space robot system are the hot topics in the research field. In this paper, a new dynamics model and control strategy of space robotic system with a flexible manipulator and a liquid fuel tank are investigated. Based on Lagrange equation method, the dynamics model of the space robotic system coupling with liquid sloshing, flexibility vibration and base movement is derived. The elastic deflection of the flexible manipulator is described by the assumed mode method and equivalent mechanical model is adopted instead of liquid sloshing under the environment of low-gravity. The inverse dynamics control algorithm combined with PD control method is performed to solve the trajectory tracking problem. Some simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Because of strong coupling, nonlinear, and time-varying characteristics, it is difficult to control complex spacecraft. By means of combining with controlled object dynamics and performance requirements, characteristic modeling and control approach is an effective way to solve this problem. Aimed at the flexible satellites described by using characteristic modeling approach, with the help of fuzzy rules, fuzzy dynamic characteristic modeling method and intelligent adaptive controller are designed to control this complex spacecraft. Meanwhile, based on the satellite system simulation platform, we validate the correctness and efficiency of the proposed modeling and control method by comparing with the simulation results of the other similar methods.

The gramian approximation methods have been proposed recently to overcome the high computing costs of classical balanced truncation based reduction methods. But those methods typically gain efficiency by projecting the original system only onto one dominant subspace of the approximate system gramian (for instance using only controllability gramian). This single gramian reduction method can lead to large errors as the subspaces of controllability and observability can be quite different for general interconnects with unsymmetric system matrices. In this paper, we propose a fast balanced truncation method where the system is balanced in terms of two approximate gramians as achieved in the classical balanced truncation method. The novelty of the new method is that we can keep the similar computing costs of the single gramian method. The proposed algorithm is based on a generalized SVD-based balancing scheme such that the dominant subspace of the approximate gramian product can be obtained in a very efficient way without explicitly forming the gramians. Experimental results on a number of published benchmarks show that the proposed method is much more accurate than the single gramian method with similar computing costs.

The theory of a laser system with a ladder-type configuration is studied in detail based on the quantum Langevin approach. By using an external field to link the lower lasing level with another atomic level, whose decay rate is much larger, laser intensity significantly increases and the quantum-limited linewidth can be quenched. We also discuss the spectrum of fluctuations of the output field, and the result shows that the fluctuations at low frequencies can be much suppressed too. On the other hand, this quenching approach can realize a laser output between two atomic levels, whose decay rates do not satisfy the usual lasing condition that the decay rate of the lower lasing level should be larger than that of the upper lasing level. It will be very useful to realize a laser output with the wavelength we want. This quenching approach has been widely used in the absorption spectrum of the ytterbium optical lattice clock and in the laser cooling approach for calcium atoms. Here we apply it in the stimulated emission of lasers.
