This paper proposes a novel weighted feature fusion in color face recognition (FR) to automatically annotate faces in personal videos. In the proposed FR method, multiple face images (belonging to the same subject) are clustered from a sequence of video frames. To facilitate a complementary effect on improving annotation performance, the grouped faces are combined using the proposed weighted feature fusion. In addition, we make effective use of facial color feature to cope with decrease in annotation performance due to a low-resolution face in personal videos. To evaluate the effectiveness of proposed FR method, more than 40,000 video frames for 10 real-world personal videos are collected from an existing online video sharing website. Experimental results show that the proposed FR method significantly improves annotation performance obtained using conventional grayscale image based FR methods.

Nowadays, the Network-on-Chip (NoC) paradigm has become more and more popular for building an on-chip communication infrastructure. Like in every traditional network, debugging and performance monitoring are also very important issues in NoC-based systems. Unfortunately, the design process of monitoring hardware is a time consuming activity. The work presented in this paper is based on a high level specification language, called SiLLis (Simplified Language for Listeners), for the convenient development of generic monitoring hardware. SiLLis allows the designer to define complex filter rules on a high abstraction level. In this way, the design time as well as the bandwidth requirements for monitoring data can be drastically reduced. To present the benefits of SiLLis, we define a performance monitor that is integrated into a NoC-based multiprocessor system-on-Chip and can be used both to analyze the performance of the system and to optimize the routing strategy at run-time. By using SiLLis, the performance monitor can be realized with a area overhead of only 0.58 % per NoC node.

This paper investigates the problem of Partitioning Skew in MapReduce-based system. Our studies with Hadoop, a widely used MapReduce implementation, demonstrate that the presence of partitioning skew causes a huge amount of data transfer during the shuffle phase and leads to significant unfairness on the reduce input among different data nodes. As a result, the applications experience performance degradation due to the long data transfer during the shuffle phase along with the computation skew, particularly in reduce phase. We develop a novel algorithm named LEEN for locality-aware and fairness-aware key partitioning in MapReduce. LEEN embraces an asynchronous map and reduce scheme. All buffered intermediate keys are partitioned according to their frequencies and the fairness of the expected data distribution after the shuffle phase. We have integrated LEEN into Hadoop-0.18.0. Our experiments demonstrate that LEEN can efficiently achieve higher locality and reduce the amount of shuffled data. More importantly, LEEN guarantees fair distribution of the reduce inputs. As a result, LEEN achieves a performance improvement of up to 40% on different workloads.

All-optical wavelength conversion is investigated using four wave mixing in silicon waveguides. The influences of nonlinear losses caused by two-photon absorption (TPA) and TPA-induced free-carrier absorption on the conversion efficiency and phase-matching condition are analyzed. The conversion bandwidth is tempted to enhance by optimizing the waveguide geometry and using the two-pump regime. And finally an angled-polarization pump is used to realize the polarization-independent wavelength conversion by eliminating the polarization discrepancy between the TE and TM modes.

A consensus feature-ranking approach has been applied to the study of localization-related temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in order to evaluate the relative discriminative power of individual attributes. Cases were selected on the basis of a postoperative outcome free of disabling seizures (i.e., Engel class I) in order to establish a definitive laterality of focal epileptogenicity. Several quantitative measures made available by imaging and electrographic studies are considered and the most discriminative of these are quantitatively prioritized for the lateralization of focal epileptogenicity. Cases requiring extraoperative electrocorticography were examined as a subgroup to establish whether the current method of analysis could distinguish laterality sufficiently well to avoid the requirement for intracranial electrode implantation.

Development of a feature ranking method based upon the discriminative power of features and unbiased towards classifiers is of interest. We have studied a consensus feature ranking method, based on multiple classifiers, and have shown its superiority to well known statistical ranking methods. In a target environment such as a medical dataset, missing values and an unbalanced distribution of data must be taken into consideration in the ranking and evaluation phases in order to legitimately apply a feature ranking method. In a comparison study, a Performance Index (PI) is proposed that takes into account both the number of features and the number of samples involved in the classification.

Particle swarm optimizer (PSO) is a stochastic global optimization technique based on a social interaction metaphor. Because of the complexity, dynamics and randomness involved in PSO, it is hard to theoretically analyze the mechanism on which PSO depends. Statistical results have shown that the probability distribution of PSO is a truncated triangle, with uniform probability across the middle that decreases on the sides. The "truncated triangle" is also called the "Maya pyramid" by Kennedy. However, very little is known regarding the sampling distribution of PSO in itself. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the "Maya pyramid" without any assumption and derive its computational formula, which is actually a hybrid uniform distribution that looks like a trapezoid and conforms with the statistical results. Based on the derived density function of the hybrid uniform distribution, the search strategy of PSO is defined and quantified to characterize the mechanism of the search strategy in PSO. In order to show the significance of these definitions based, on the derived hybrid uniform distribution, the comparison between the defined search strategies of the classical, linear decreasing weight based PSO and the canonical constricted PSO suggested by Clerc is illustrated and elaborated. Partial order reduction techniques have been used to combat the state explosion problem in model checking procedures for concurrent systems with probabilistic behaviors. There are some results that give criteria on applying partial order reduction for verifying quantitative time properties and reward-based properties on actions. However, there are many situations that reward-based properties are expressed on states rather than on actions because actions are triggered in no time and the quantities can not be obtained easily. This paper presents reduction criteria for a probabilistic temporal logic that allows specification of restrictions on quantitative measures given by spatial resources function for the states of the considered system and provides the proof of the correctness.

In this paper, we provide a generalized file replication scheme with a storage load balancing function in unstructured P2P file-sharing networks. The generalized file replication scheme is expressed as a weighted mixture of the concepts introduced in existing schemes. A mathematical analysis shows that the system behavior realized by the generalized file replication scheme can be described by a thermal diffusion equation composed of heat, reaction and diffusion terms, the weights of which are controlled by a parameter of the mixing rate. Here, the heat term represents a function to enhance file search performance by making replicas on specific peers. The reaction term represents a function to avoid concentrations of storage loads on specific peers. The diffusion term represents a function to uniform the storage loads among peers. The simulation results show that the generalized file replication scheme enables us to control the trade-off between search and storage load balancing performances extensively and intuitively by controlling the parameter of the mixing rate. In addition, the simulation results show that the generalized file replication scheme can adapt to dynamic P2P file-sharing environments.

Aim at the hysteretic nonlinearity characteristic of the giant magnetostrictive actuator in control, an internal model control method based on support vector regression is presented in this paper. Its models are built by support vector regression using the input and output data of the actuator and the internal model control is achieved. The simulation results show the method in this paper has better control precision.
