Low-power design is one of the most important issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), while reliable information transmitting should be ensured as well. Transmitting power (TP) control is a simple method to make the power consumption down, but excessive interferences from potential adjacent operating links and communication reliability between nodes should be considered. In this paper, a reliable and energy efficient protocol is presented, which adopts adaptive rate control based on an optimal TP. A mathematical model considering average interference and network connectivity was used to predict the optimal TP. Then for the optimal TP, active nodes adaptively chose the data rate with the change of bit-error-rate(BER) performance. The efficiency of the new strategy was validated by mathematical analysis and simulations. Compared with 802.11 DCF which uses maximum unified TP and BASIC protocol, it is shown that the higher average throughput can achieve while the energy consumption per useful bit can be reduced according to the results.

Different from the traditional wireless networks, in wireless sensor networks(WSNs) , power consumption is a critical aspect, because current nodes are always supported by constrained-energy battery. A particular challenge in maintaining extended battery lifetime lies in achieving communications with low power. For better understanding of the design trade offs of WSNs, a more accurate power consumption model for wireless sensor node is proposed. Different from models ever showed, in which the power consumption of each component in WSN node was assumed constant , the new one takes into account energy dissipation of circuits in practical physical layer. It shows that there are some parameters such as data rate, carrier frequency, RF output power et al, which have a significant effect on the WSN node with the metric energy per useful bit (EPUB). Then an optimal design method to make the network energy efficient is described by adjusting one or more of these parameters. The efficiency of the strategy was validated by mathematical analysis and simulations. The results showed that the EPUB can be reduced by optimally choosing the rate-power combination based on the proposed power consumption model for a given load.

ISCSI is a newly emerging protocol with the goal of implementing the storage area network (SAN) technology over TCP/IP, which brings economy and convenience whereas it also raises performance and reliability issues. This paper presents a implementation of iSCSTbased fault tolerant storage system, and then analyzed the reliability of this system by combination of fuzzy logic and Markov modeling. This reliability method is a technique for analyzing fault tolerant designs under considerable uncertainty, such as is seen in compilations of component failure rates, the presented model provides the estimation of the lower and upper boundary of iSCSTbased fault tolerant storage system with a single run of the model.

Disk mirroring or RAID1 is a popular paradigm to achieve fault tolerance and high reliability, this paper describes four mirrored disk organizations: basic mirroring, group rotate declustering, interleaved declustering, chained declustering, then the membership function of the states is defined and the reliability of mirrored disk system is analyzed by using the reliability theory based on fuzzy state.

The RAID5x is a two-disk failure-tolerant scheme of disk array that can be moved to the distributed environments. This new scheme called RAID5x variation can guarantees fault tolerance both to double node and double disk failures, there are two variations based on data distribution for placing data, parity, and mirrored copies within a periodical stripe: disk clustering and disk de-clustering. Then this paper analyzed the reliability of this system by combination of fuzzy logic and Markov modeling. This reliability method is a technique for analyzing fault tolerant designs under considerable uncertainty, such as is seen in compilations of component failure rates, the presented model provides the estimation of the lower and upper boundary of RAID5x variation with a single run of the model.

Grid computing emerges as an effective technology to couple geographically distributed resources and solve large-scale computational problems in wide area networks. There are several popular grid platforms, such as UNICORE and Globus Toolkit. Many famous grid projects are constructed with these platforms, each of which manages different distributed resources. In order to aggregate resources managed by different grid platforms, it is necessary to implement the interoperation among these grid platforms. Security interoperation is one of key issues for the interoperation. CGSP (ChinaGrid Support Platform) and VEGA are two popular grid platforms in China. To achieve security interoperation between these two platforms, four mapping policies, including user-user mapping, user-agora mapping, role-user mapping, role-agora mapping, are proposed in this paper. The security interoperation process is proposed based on SAML specification and the mapping policies. We also analyze the flexibility of mapping policies and the security of the interoperation process.

It now becomes a trend to implement the interconnections between resources as well as services in ubiquitous systems. Attribute-based authorization mechanisms, protocols and systems are gaining in popularity, such as SAML, XACML, Shibboleth, etc. However, their management efficiency could be further improved. The Role-based Access Control (RBAC) mechanism is widely accepted as a general mechanism for authorization management. However, RBAC is still not flexible enough to address various application scenarios in ubiquitous systems. We propose a new architecture for access control in ubiquitous systems that impose attribute and status constraints on the RBAC model, which can significantly enhance the generality and flexibility of authorization by integrating the advantages of RBAC and attributed- based access control models. Moreover, the state mechanism proposed in this architecture captures the states of the authorization elements so as to reflect the outcomes of the authorization control. Finally, we analyze the flexibility and generality of this architecture in ubiquitous systems.

Since a significant amount of redundant information causes problems like inefficiency or congestion in the existing RSS, a method using part of speech (pos) tagging to extract keywords is proposed to solve these problems. Firstly, the title of news is analyzed by using Chinese word segmentation and speech tagging system. Then, the keywords of the title are identified according to their part of speech. All of the extracted keywords are compared, categorized and stored according to the proposed criterion in this paper. In that case, all the news in the same category is identical or similar. An online semi-supervised active learning algorithm is proposed, which is based on self-organizing incremental neural network (SOINN). The proposed method do not need any priori knowledge such as number of nodes or number of classes; it can automatically learn number of nodes and teacher vectors needed by the current task; It can realize online incremental learning even life-long learning. The experiments for artificial data and real world data show that the proposed method works efficiently.

We have reported the successful use of the Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) reaction for Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA in a 25 μl micro-reactor for the development of a rapid diagnostic device recently. This method shows the successful amplification of HBV DNA with high specificity and sensitivity efficiently within one hour. Such a powerful method can be used for many other fast diagnostic applications with the help of optimal primer design and miniaturization of reactor. In this report, we will first summarize the general design rules for primer design from literature reviews and our experimental results. We will discuss the effects of HBV primers and concentrations of working buffers for optimal performance. © 2007 National Taiwan University.
