Variable length decoding (VLD) is inherent bit-serial operation and is the first stage of the whole video decoding task, the overall decoding system performance is determined by its throughput and efficiency. In this paper, a scheme for decoding of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients is presented The DCT VLD tables are split into two different tables: the one with 0-3 leading zeros and the other with 4 or more leading zeros. The proposed VLD tables need less than 6K bytes memory space, and the decoding procedures are completed by applying numerical properties to codewords identification and symbol indexing. Compared with the direct indexing method, not only the memory space is reduced for symbol information, but also the code efficiency is improved by enabling compiling code with near mode. Experimental results show that the proposed solution can improve the VLD speed by 17-43%. This VLD method has been integrated into the developed embedded MPEG-4 video decoder successfully

Video decoders are an important component in modern networked multimedia systems. TMS320DM642 is suitable for implementation of embedded video decoder. However, the high data rate, large sizes, and distinctive memory access patterns of MPEG-4 video decoders exert a particular strain on cache. This paper proposes an optimization method to allocate the memory of TMS320DM642. In cache-SRAM-SDRAM structure, the SRAM negotiates the unbalance of the cache and the SDRAM in speed and capacity. Due to its importance, a cache-based memory allocation mode is proposed to make full use of the SRAM. According to this mode, the SRAM is divided into three sections: the data exchanging section, the core code and variables storage section, and the rest of the SRAM which is set as cache for the other codes and data management. The experiment results show the proposed solutions can improve the MPEG-4 decoding speed by almost 25%. This cache optimization method has been integrated into the developed embedded MPEG-4 video decoder. The decoder can perform real time decoding with bitstreams coded under two channels 4CIF or eight channels CIF frame size which is the typical requirement of networked video surveillance applications nowadays

As the increasing of system performance and computing power, embedded systems are more complicated and interactive. Therefore, operating system (OS) plays a more important role in embedded systems to utilize various hardware and software resources. However, no OS can meet all requirements of various embedded systems. Due to the advance of reconfigurable processors, system requirements can be more dynamic. Embedded OS has becoming more critical in the development of embedded systems and thus there is a strong need of configurable embedded OS to better and faster build up the target system. In this paper, we propose a configurable OS, called COS, based on SOA (service-oriented architecture) for embedded SoC (system on a chip) systems to build an application specific OS according to the system requirements. COS can be easily configured to better utilize the resources of the target embedded platform and have better support to the embedded application. Moreover, the COS can easily extend new features or functionalities of other OSes and even be adapted to the designs of other OSes. We implement COS on an ARM platform to prove its configurability and also evaluate its overhead. We believe that COS can be configured to meet the various requirements in embedded SoC systems and help to speed up the embedded system development process

Moving object segmentation in the compressed domain plays an important role in many real-time applications, e.g. video indexing, video surveillance, etc. H.264/AVC is the up-to-date video coding standard, which employs several new coding tools and provides a different video format. In this paper, a robust spatio-temporal segmentation approach to extract moving objects in the compressed domain for H.264 video stream is proposed. Coarse moving objects are firstly extracted from the motion vector field through the MRF classification process. Spatial segmentation is based on the HT coefficient, which is used to refine the object boundary of temporal segmentation results. Fusion of spatio-temporal segmentation is based on region projection based labeling technique. Further edge refinement is performed to smooth the object boundaries. The performance of the proposed approach is illustrated by simulation carried on several test sequences. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can provide the visually similar results as by using spatial domain process with much less computational complexity.

Accuracy of information transmission when a signal must be transmitted through a communication channel is of essential importance in design of communication systems. When system resources are limited, such as transmission bandwidths assigned to a wireless communication channel, appropriate utility of available resources becomes imperative. This paper investigates fundamental relationships between accuracy of information exchange and communication resources, on a platform of wireless communication channels that involve typical system blocks of data compression, quantization, and stochastic wireless channels. The main complexity relationships developed in this paper provide rigorous trade-off between resource consumptions and information processing errors of each block. When these relationships are integrated, an optimization procedure emerges that allows optimal allocation of resources to each system block, such as compression ratio, quantization levels, and transmission speed, to maximize overall information accuracy. Consequently, the overall errors of the transmitted signal will be minimized at the receiver end.

User access control is one of the core parts in the developing Internet field. However, in home network service platform and Web service platform, there is no concrete research yet. The OSGi provides a service platform which ensures the interoperability between heterogeneous technologies and various devices in home network environment. Nowadays, user access control is one of the core parts which should be cleared, but there are no concrete researches yet. So in this paper, we propose a supplemented authorization policy management framework based on RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) for user access control at home network environment in which the OSGi service platform is operated. The proposed access control framework improves effectiveness, assures privacy and provides convenience at the same time. In conclusion, we provide the base to implement the effective, safe, and convenient the OSGi service platform by proposing the new framework in authorization and user administration part.

We have developed scanning laser range sensor called "SOKUIKI" sensor which is ultra-small scanning laser range sensor adopted for various types of mobile robots as we have already published. As a sensor for environment recognition, we thought the sensor must have not only outputting distance data but also another helpful function for mobile robots. So it was considered that what kind of advanced functions should be provided to SOKUIKI sensor. As a result two most important purposes were acquired. 1. Variation on its distance data and method to get the data. 2. The function for prevention of optical interference between sensors. These rolls were installed to the sensor, and confirmed their effect. This paper describes its result and proposes sensor communication interface protocol (SCIP) which is developed as new command system just for SOKUIKI sensor

Fashion is one of the most visible media of the change in modern society. It reflects the change in aesthetic, economic, political, cultural and social life. Individuals and society use fashion to communicate their taste and lifestyle, teens for example employing different clothing styles. On the individual there are two basic forces involved namely the 'differentiating force" and the "socialising force". Those two forces are central in an individual's self - negotiation between the need for exhibiting and the need to conform to the social norms and are expressed in personal fashion styles. The aim of this paper is to model this expression on the case of teens, more precisely to model clothing fashion preferences of teens employing machine learning techniques.

A new method is developed to measure the magnetizations in each layer of a multi-layered garnet film. This method combines a single VSM and multiple FMR measurements to completely characterize the magnetic properties of layers. This method can be immediately extended to the case of multiple layers or different materials, as long as the requirement for resolving the FMR absorption peaks for different layers is satisfied.
