Adaptive algorithms are increasingly acknowledged in leading parallel and distributed research. In the past, algorithms were manually tuned to be executed efficiently on a particular architecture. However, interest has shifted towards algorithms that can adapt themselves to the computational resources. A cost model representing the behavior of the system (i.e. system parameters) and the algorithm (i.e algorithm parameters) plays an important role in adaptive parallel algorithms. In this paper, we contribute a computational model based on Bulk Synchronous Parallel processing that predicts performance of a parallelized split-step Fourier transform. We extracted the system parameters of a cluster (upon which our algorithm was executed) and showed the use of an algorithmic parameter in the model that exhibits optimal behavior. Our model can thus be used for the purpose of self-adaption. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The paper proposes a method to discover effectively users' concept patterns when multiple objects of interest (e.g., foreground and background objects) are involved in content-based image retrieval. The proposed method incorporates multiple instance learning into the user relevance feedback in a seamless way to discover where the user's objects/regions of most interest are and how to map the local features of that(those) region(s) to the user's high-level concepts. A three-layer neural network is used to model the underlying mapping progressively through the feedback and learning procedure

In this paper a design methodology of 'distributed' energy systems is presented. These are defined as energy systems with unregulated distributed generators connected to the lower voltage levels. The cornerstone in their design is the steady-state analysis of distribution systems under uncertainty in energy in energy generation and consumption. Based on this definition, the structure of a system-design tool is proposed. The system is described by the steady-state model, while all different types of distributed generators (dispatchable or nondispatchable technology concepts) are treated in a unifying manner through probabilistic modelling. The modelling of the interdependence between the random input variables is treated by introducing the concepts of comonotonicity, countermonotonicity and independence between distributed generations and distributed consumptions as stochastic bounds describing extreme statistical dependence between the input random variables.

We propose and demonstrate a new VLSI structure using high performance metal-gate/high-K MOSFETs and high-Q RF passive devices on Ge-on-insulator (GOI) platform. In additional to high RF performance passive devices on insulating Si formed by ion implantation, the metal-gate/(La)AlO/sub 3//GOI MOSFETs have 1.7-2.0X improved electron and hole mobility with the merits of minimizing interfacial reaction high-K crystallization, Fermi-level pinning, and impurity diffusion due to low thermal budget of 500/spl deg/ C RTA.

Tc-99m HMPAO is a typical tracer used in the analysis of cerebral blood flow. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) brain imaging utilizing Tc-99m HMPAO is thus a popular method to assess brain function. An image analysis system for SPECT images that performs a series of image processing procedures including three-dimensional (3-D) image registration, brain extraction, and intensity normalization, is presented here to map all the 3-D brain data to the same space. Afterward, the aligned images undertake a standard statistical analysis, the paired t test, to detect the areas that have significant deviations between the two sets of images. The statistical t map is then represented with a color plot for each brain slice to indicate the activation foci. The registration results are evaluated on the designed phantom images, the acquired clinical images, and by visual inspection. The experimental studies reveal that the subvoxel accuracy is achieved and the consistency is also maintained. Besides, the resulting statistic maps are found very helpful to doctors for lesion evaluation and localization in the clinical diagnosis of schizophrenic patients

The challenge of human factor influence for analyzing the reliability and safety of car transportation is discussed. An analysis of the density and the kind of use among the drivers in different regions and seasons of the year is made. The possibilities to detect the driver falling into a relaxant, somnolent or micro-sleep stage by the use of suitable combination of secondary factors are investigated. The operation of the driver in the moving car is an example of very complicated interaction between several very heterogeneous systems.

This paper shows the development of a passive power limiting technique for variable speed generation. An 80kW Wound-Rotor Induction Generator (WRIG) was utilized to demonstrate this characteristic for wind-turbine generators by both modeling and lab demonstration. First, simulations were used to calculate the rotor impedance values that could set maximized speed-power characteristics for steady-state operation. Second, practical tests were performed and compared to the simulation results after the values were set to maximize speed-power characteristics of the 80kW-WRIG. Finally, another tandem connected WRIG was modeled to extend the wind speed range in addition to the 80kW machine.

In this paper, we propose a new framework based on data mining algorithms for building a Web-page recommender system. A recommender system is an intermediary program (or an agent) with a user interface that automatically and intelligently generates a list of information, which suits an individual's needs. Two information filtering methods for providing the recommended information are considered: (1) by analyzing the information content, i.e., content-based filtering, and (2) by referencing other user access behaviors, i.e., collaborative filtering. By using the data mining algorithms, the information filtering processes can be performed prior to the actual recommending process. As a result, the system response time could be improved and thus, making the framework scalable.

Compared to the regular documents, the major distinguishing characteristics of the Web documents are the dynamic hyper-structure. Thus, in addition to terms or keywords for regular document clustering, Web document clustering can incorporate some dynamic information such as the hyperlinks and the access patterns extracted from the user query logs. In this paper, we extend the concept of document clustering into Web document clustering by introducing the strategy of affinity-based similarity measure, which utilizes the user access patterns in determining the similarities among Web documents via a probabilistic model. Several comparison experiments are conducted using a real data set and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed similarity measure outperforms the cosine coefficient and the Euclidean distance method under different document clustering algorithms.

We demonstrate, for the first time, a novel high-k AlN capacitor that is program-erasable at voltages of +4 or -4 V and that has good retention for 1T1C memory. These features are not shown by Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, or other capacitors that use only a single high-k dielectric layer. Good data retention is shown with a threshold shift of only 0.06V after /spl plusmn/4V program/erase for 10/sup 4/sec.
