The challenge of human factor influence for analyzing the reliability and safety of car transportation is discussed. An analysis of the density and the kind of use among the drivers in different regions and seasons of the year is made. The possibilities to detect the driver falling into a relaxant, somnolent or micro-sleep stage by the use of suitable combination of secondary factors are investigated. The operation of the driver in the moving car is an example of very complicated interaction between several very heterogeneous systems.

This paper shows the development of a passive power limiting technique for variable speed generation. An 80kW Wound-Rotor Induction Generator (WRIG) was utilized to demonstrate this characteristic for wind-turbine generators by both modeling and lab demonstration. First, simulations were used to calculate the rotor impedance values that could set maximized speed-power characteristics for steady-state operation. Second, practical tests were performed and compared to the simulation results after the values were set to maximize speed-power characteristics of the 80kW-WRIG. Finally, another tandem connected WRIG was modeled to extend the wind speed range in addition to the 80kW machine.

In this paper, we propose a new framework based on data mining algorithms for building a Web-page recommender system. A recommender system is an intermediary program (or an agent) with a user interface that automatically and intelligently generates a list of information, which suits an individual's needs. Two information filtering methods for providing the recommended information are considered: (1) by analyzing the information content, i.e., content-based filtering, and (2) by referencing other user access behaviors, i.e., collaborative filtering. By using the data mining algorithms, the information filtering processes can be performed prior to the actual recommending process. As a result, the system response time could be improved and thus, making the framework scalable.

Compared to the regular documents, the major distinguishing characteristics of the Web documents are the dynamic hyper-structure. Thus, in addition to terms or keywords for regular document clustering, Web document clustering can incorporate some dynamic information such as the hyperlinks and the access patterns extracted from the user query logs. In this paper, we extend the concept of document clustering into Web document clustering by introducing the strategy of affinity-based similarity measure, which utilizes the user access patterns in determining the similarities among Web documents via a probabilistic model. Several comparison experiments are conducted using a real data set and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed similarity measure outperforms the cosine coefficient and the Euclidean distance method under different document clustering algorithms.

We demonstrate, for the first time, a novel high-k AlN capacitor that is program-erasable at voltages of +4 or -4 V and that has good retention for 1T1C memory. These features are not shown by Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, or other capacitors that use only a single high-k dielectric layer. Good data retention is shown with a threshold shift of only 0.06V after /spl plusmn/4V program/erase for 10/sup 4/sec.

Presented herein is an efficient simulation technique enabling systematic investigation of the soft programming over-erased flash EEPROM cells. The simulation provides a method by which to find the optimal soft programming technique for given current. The method requires only the cell performance data and allows investigation of the soft programming under various bias conditions. In principle, the methodology can also be used to investigate the programming and erase operations.

For the first time, we demonstrate 3D integration of self-aligned IrO/sub 2/(Hf)/LaAlO/sub 3//GOI CMOSFETs above 0.18 /spl mu/m Si CMOSFETs. At EOT=1.4nm, the novel IrO/sub 2/(Hf) dual gates (4.4 and 5.1 eV workfunction) on control 2D LaAlO/sub 3//Si devices have high electron and hole mobilities of 203 and 67 cm/sup 2//Vs. On the 3D structure the LaAlO/sub 3// GOI shows even higher 389 and 234 cm/sup 2//Vs mobilities, and process compatibility with current Si VLSI. The higher drive current, larger integration density, shorter interconnects distance, and simple process of 3D approach can help solve the AC power issue and 2D scaling limitation.

This paper reflects one aspect of an overall research initiative to better understand and articulate the "cause and effect" relationship between design causes and operational effects. Here the specific focus is on "before the fact" system maintainability. Maintenance considerations for software intensive systems must be addressed early in design and must focus on the entire system life cycle. Use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components in system architectures reinforces this need. COTS usage can be readily observed in modern commercial and defense systems. Such architectures are often characterized by an evolving physical baseline (technology refreshment) driven by obsolescence considerations. This paper proposes aspects of a framework to evaluate system architectures, with a particular focus on system maintainability and with the objective of positively influencing the long-term cost of operational maintenance. © 2004 The Authors.

systems and software engineering are converging disciplines with increasing evolution of modern complex systems towards increased information and knowledge content. Further, with the capital investment associated with such systems and their long operational life spans, a longer-term notion of quality during design and implementation is necessary. The realities of cost, safety, and staffing considerations are forcing increasing emphasis on reuse and reengineering strategies. This imperative becomes even more urgent with the thrust towards the inclusion of commercial-off-the-shelf components in system architectures. One key operational imperative for complex systems is the cost of maintenance. This paper presents an industry survey conducted to understand maintenance practices prevalent in commercial and defense industries. Results from an industry survey focused on system maintenance measures and metrics are also presented. This survey focused on information and knowledge intensive systems and was supported by INCOSE-The International Council on systems engineering and SOLE-The International Society of Logistics. © 2004 The Authors.

Until now, many researches based on metadata have been studied for data integration in various fields. However, there exists a problem in that the existing approaches still require much cost to build an initial guideline, which is sometimes called as a registry, global metadata set. The most critical problem of existing researches is that the researches have not been seriously considered on the corresponding domain properties- data level and user level. Most of all, it is difficult to create a standardized guideline on the entire data with the restricted cost. In this paper, we propose a method to progressively integrate databases considering the domain properties under limited cost. For instance, in scientific data, general users are interested in the simple and easy scientific data, which has low complexity. On the other hand, scientists or experts can utilize more detailed and specialized data as well as the general data. It means that an initial data quantity to be integrated is determined by the relationship of the domain properties. We show the implementation results of applying it to scientific data managed by Korea Institute of science and Technology Information. The proposed method provides a progressive data integration mechanism, and especially it gives successful and efficient output on the creation of a standard guideline in the situation where the given cost is limited. © 2003 iKMS & World Scientific Publishing Company.
