Analysis of microelectrode recordings (MER) of extracellular neuronal activity has gained increasing interest due to potential improvements to surgical techniques involving ablation or placement of deep brain stimulators, as is common in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Critical to these procedures is the identification of different brain structures such as the globus pallidus internus (GPI). Evidence suggests that the spike trains from individual neurons contain enough information to identify the brain structure in which they are located For the work reported here, spike train data gathered during surgical procedure from multiple patients is used. Using a moving window sampling approach, a novel feature extraction method for spike trains was developed. This method is then used in combination with a support vector classification algorithm. Results strongly indicate that the sampling methods reported here are able to extract the necessary information for highly accurate spike source identification.

In order to use data information in the Internet, it is necessary to extract data from web pages. An HTT tree model representing HTML pages is presented. Based on the HTT model, a wrapper generation algorithm AGW is proposed. The AGW algorithm utilizes comparing and correcting technique to generate the wrapper with the native characteristic of the HTT tree structure. The AGW algorithm can not only generate the wrapper automatically, but also rebuild the data schema easily and reduce the complexity of the computing.

An operating system (OS) can be viewed as the collection progress of required directives before a computer system can run. Thus, OS is the most important software in any computer system. If OS is risky, then the computer system could be in danger. So, information security has become a critical issue for computer systems, it is necessary to develop a trusted operating system. As the result, in order to improve system security, there are many enhancements, which are developed. Some of them are open source. We can integrate appropriate software to construct a trusted system. The paper first gives a discussion covered the current security problems and the difficulty in solving those problems. Then, we study security function requirements from "protection profile for multilevel operating systems in environments requiring medium robustness", to find important secure features. Next, we demonstrate important security enhancement projects of OS with these corresponding security features. Finally, we give an idea about how to combine some of well-done open source secure software, and satisfy the secure features.

In this paper we present the results of an intelligent analysis of osteoporosis database gathered during a longitudinal study in which a random sample of 100 women who had passed precautionary examinations for detection of osteoporosis over five years and were not referred for a definite medical diagnosis was pulled from the records. The intelligent data analysis using advanced methods for decision tree construction was used in order to try to find the main factors that can reduce the risk for development of osteoporosis in women. Most of the extracted knowledge confirmed known medical criteria that put women to risk for osteoporosis, however some new interesting patterns have also been shown.

In this paper we present a multimethod approach for induction of a specific class of classifiers, which can assist physicians in medical diagnosing in the case of mitral valve prolapse. Mitral valve prolapse is one of the most controversial prevalent cardiac condition and may affect up to ten percent of the population and in the worst case results in sudden death. MultiVeDec is a general framework enabling researchers to generate various intelligent tools based on machine learning. In this paper we focused on various decision tree methods, which are capable of extracting knowledge in a form closer to human perception, a feature that is very important in medical field. The experiment included classifiers with various classical single method approaches, evolutionary approaches, hybrid approaches and also our newest multimethod approach. The main concern of the latest approach is to rind a way to enable dynamic combination of methodologies to the somehow quasi unified knowledge representation. The proposed multimethod approach was capable to outperform all other tested approaches by producing classifier for diagnosing mitral valve prolapse with the highest overall and average class accuracy.

We investigate and compare a few parallel preconditioning techniques in the iterative solution of large sparse linear systems arising from solid Earth simulation with and without using contact information in the domain partitioning process. Previous studies are focused on using static or matrix pattern based incomplete LU (ILU) preconditioners in a localized preconditioner implementation. Our current studies are concerned with preconditioner performance for solving two different cases with and without known contact information. For the cases with contact information, we use localized threshold value based incomplete LU (ILUT) preconditioner to improve efficiency. For the cases without contact information, we use a global sparse approximate inverse preconditioner with a static sparsity pattern to achieve robustness. Numerical results from simulating ground motion on a parallel supercomputer are given to compare the effectiveness of these parallel preconditioning techniques. © 2003 IEEE.

In this paper, a powerful open Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) framework is proposed. Such an open framework is powerful since different sub-methods can be plugged into the framework to generate different specific Multiple Instance Learning algorithms. In our proposed framework, the Multiple Instance Learning problem is first converted to an unconstrained optimization problem by the Minimum Square Error (MSE) criterion, and then the framework can be constructed with an open form of hypothesis and gradient search method. The proposed Multiple Instance Learning framework is applied to the drug activity problems in bioinformatics applications. Specifically, experiments are conducted on the Musk-I dataset to predict the binding activity of drug molecules. In the experiments, an algorithm with the exponential hypothesis model and the Quasi-Newton method is embedded into our proposed framework. We compare our proposed framework with other existing algorithms and the experimental results show that our proposed framework yields a good accuracy of classification, which demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of our framework.

In order to fulfill the functional requirements of multimedia management systems while achieving the efficiency and reliability at the same time, we adopt the component-based design to develop a complicated distributed multimedia management system called DMMManager in this paper. DMMManager integrates a set of core components for managing multimedia data, such as content-based retrieval for image and video data, and multimedia presentation design and rendering. Component-based design makes the reuse and share of the components easy and reliable, and thus avoids the waste of both time and man power in the development cycle. Moreover, new applications can be easily integrated into this system as a new development and utilize the existing components. Besides component reuse, the system is also designed to facilitate information reuse. For example, the output of the image/video retrieval component can be taken as the input for the multimedia presentation component. In addition, the use of subnetworks in our multimedia presentation design also enables the modularized reuse of the existing presentation models that are previously created.

This paper presents a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system that incorporates real-valued multiple instance learning (MIL) into the user relevance feedback (RF) to learn the user's subjective visual concepts, especially where the user's most interested region and how to map the local feature vector of that region to the high-level concept pattern of the user. RF provides a way to obtain the subjectivity of the user's high-level visual concepts, and MIL enables the automatic learning of the user's high-level concepts. The user interacts with the CBIR system by relevance feedback in a way that the extent to which the image samples retrieved by the system are relevant to the user's intention is labeled. The system in turn applies the MIL method to find user's most interested image region from the feedback. A multilayer neural network that is trained progressively through the feedback and learning procedure is used to map the low-level image features to the high-level concepts.

In this paper, we propose a rate control mechanism for multimedia multicast streaming in the Internet. A single and optimal transmission rate that is adaptive to the network congestion, buffer occupancies, and the playback requirements of the member clients in the multicast group is allocated. We optimize the multicasting delivery in the Internet by improving the buffer occupancy of all clients for on-time presentation while using the minimal transmission rate. Scalable playback is used for the clients with low bandwidth capabilities in a heterogeneous environment. Simulation results show that the buffer capacity can be efficiently improved and fairness is ensured among the member clients.
