This paper describes model-based, active control of an aftertreatment system for a spark ignition engine equipped with a three-way catalyst (TWC) and pre- and post-TWC oxygen sensors. A controller is designed to manage the oxygen storage level in the TWC in order to maximize the simultaneous conversion efficiencies of oxides of nitrogen, NO/sub x/, unburned hydrocarbons, HC, and carbon monoxide, CO. Linear exhaust gas oxygen sensors (UEGOs) are used to measure pre- and post-catalyst A/F. The pre-catalyst A/F measurement is assumed to be biased in addition to being corrupted by zero-mean noise, while the post-catalyst measurement is assumed to be only corrupted by zero-mean noise. A series controller configuration is adopted. The upstream controller provides relatively rapid response to disturbances, while the downstream controller uses an extended Kalman filter (observer) to estimate the relative oxygen level. The estimated value of oxygen storage is then used to regulate the relative oxygen level of the TWC to 50%. The performance and robustness of the proposed control system in the face of noise and model uncertainty are evaluated through extensive simulations.

This paper proposes an intelligent diagnosis method for plant machinery using wavelet transform (WT) genetic programming (GP) and possibility theory. The WT is used to extract feature spectra of each machine state from measured vibration signal for distinguishing faults. Excellent symptom parameters (SP) for detecting fault states are automatically generated by GP. The membership functions of symptom parameters are established using possibility theory for resolving the ambiguous diagnosis problems. The methods proposed in this paper are verified by applying them to the fault diagnosis of gear equipment.

Anaphora always appears in the text and it is a hot topic in linguistics and computational linguistics area. Anaphora resolution is an important part of the information extraction, and it is also important to discourse understanding, machine translation, abstract extraction and so on. After studying on the text in Chinese financial domain, an anaphora resolution system is proposed, which is built on a set of filtration rules and a set of evaluation rules. An effective content-based visual image retrieval system is presented. This system consists of two main components: visual content extraction and indexing, and query engine. Each image in the image database is represented by its visual features: color and spatial information. The system uses a color label histogram with only thirteen bins to extract the color information from an image in the image database. A unique unsupervised segmentation algorithm combined with the wavelet technique generates the spatial feature of an image automatically. The resulting feature vectors are relatively low in dimensions compared to those in other systems. The query engine employs a color filter and a spatial filter to dramatically reduce the search range. As a result, queue processing is speeded up. The experimental results demonstrate that our system is capable of retrieving images that belong to the same category.

An abstract multimedia semantic model called the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model is proposed to model the RTSP-based (real-time streaming protocol) multimedia presentation systems. RTSP provides a set of methods to support the functionality of "VCR-like" remote control on the client side so that users are allowed to control playback of the streaming media. The MATN model is used to model RTSP actions as well as temporal relations and synchronization control of the media streams. The advantages of using the MATN model are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of modification. Furthermore, a formal definition of the MATN model and modeling of RTSP actions using the MATN model are presented in detail.

Efficient utilization of network resources is essential in the provision of quality multimedia services. Different approaches have been proposed to shape the multimedia streams as a transmission schedule with smoothed traffic burst. In this paper, we concentrate on the problem of efficient use of bandwidth and client buffer. For this purpose, an optimal transmission schedule is proposed to provide the minimal allocation of the bandwidth and maximal utilization of the client buffer. Simulation results show that the shaping results obtained can dynamically adjust the transmission rate according to the buffer packet sizes and playback rates at the client to avoid the loss of packets, and at the same time achieve the minimal bandwidth allocation and maximal utilization of the client buffer.
