In this paper a three dimensional (3D) image processing expert system called 3D-IMPRESS is presented. This system can automatically construct a 3D image processing procedure by using pairs of an original input image and a desired output figure called sample figure given by a user This paper describes the outline of 3D-IMPRESS and presents a method of procedure consolidation for generating a procedure commonly applicable to some other 3D gray images. Finally, we show segmentation results of 3D chest CT images by using the procedures generated by 3D-IMPRESS and discuss the performance of the system.

The mapping of the electromagnetic fields above a microwave circuit can be of great importance in detecting desirable and undesirable interactions of the circuit with its surroundings and failure diagnosis of microelectronic integrated circuits. As a time-domain pulse measurement technique, photoconductive sampling can measure picosecond electric fields when the switch is positioned in free-space as well as picosecond potential pulses. In this paper, we develop a photoconductive electric-field probe with less than a picosecond temporal resolution and /spl mu/m spatial resolution for picosecond pulse propagation properties measurement. The probe was fabricated using a semiconductor micromachining process based on low-temperature-grown GaAs (LT-GaAs) lift-off thin film technique (ELO).

To animate four-dimensional medical imaging, it is often required to interpolate missing data between consecutive 3D imaging volume or objects. A multidimensional interpolation scheme can be used for this purpose. However, it is in general very computationally intensive. The authors present an interactive approach to animate 3D geometric changes of medical imaging in 4D. We perform interpolation in 2D and treat 3D points stored on images as display primitives to fast visualize 3D change in shapes. This approach avoids interpolation in 3D and therefore it is much faster than traditional multidimensional interpolation methods.

Although many high-performance computersystems are now multiprocessor-based, little work has been done in real-time concurrency control of transaction executions in a multiprocessor environment. A real-time concurrency control protocol designed for uniprocessor or distributed environments may not fit the needs of multiprocessor-based real-time database systems because of a lower degree of concurrency of the transaction executions and a larger number of priority inversions. This paper proposes the concept of a priority cap to bound the maximum number of priority inversions in multiprocessor-based real-time database systems to meet transaction deadlines and to explore the abundant computing resources of parallel computersystems. A series of experiments is conducted to evaluate the capability of the proposed methodology in scheduling real-time transactions in a parallel fashion.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have a variety of potential civil and military applications. As MEMS become widely implemented, the application of closed-loop control methods to MEMS will lead to higher degrees of certainty and reliability of microelectromechanical operation in physically demanding environments. This paper presents an overview of research and development progress in the area of MEMS control at West Virginia University. The implementation and simulation of a closed-loop stroke-length control of a lateral comb actuator is presented. The closed-loop scheme implemented is based on a common proportional, integral, derivative (PID) linear feedback control. The position signal of the lateral comb actuator device was obtained using a through-wafer free-space optical probe. The paper also includes further progress in both linear and nonlinear feedback position control schemes.

Emerging parallel or distributed heterogeneous real-time computersystems with many disparate constraints and requirements would benefit from a unifying and comprehensive systems engineering support in the design, testing and deployment phases, which interfaces with a human at a very high level and efficiently handles the system complexity. We present an approach to integration of: a compiler and constraint logic programming-based approach to design and engineering of complex real-time systems; and an online performance analysis and visualization technology with steering. An example distributed real-time system is used to help describe the integrated approach. Details are presented about how the involved technologies are used to help system developers and users achieve better system performance through on-line repair and reconfiguration.
