This paper extends the useful concept of open systems proposed by W.S. Liu, et al. (1997) in scheduling real-time applications and non-real-time applications, where the schedulability of each real-time application can be validated independently of other applications in the system. We replace the underlying earliest-deadline-first OS scheduler of the open system architecture by W.S. Liu, et al. (1997) with a rate-monotonic OS scheduler. The motivation behind this work is that many existing operating systems may not support the earliest deadline first scheduling very well. We propose to use the idea of sporadic servers to preserve CPU cycles for applications. We also develop schedulability tests for real-time applications which adopt the rate monotonic scheduling algorithm, the earliest deadline first scheduling algorithm, the priority ceiling protocol, and the stack resource policy. We allow tasks in each application to share local and global non-preemptable resources. A global resource synchronization mechanism is proposed. This paper provides a fixed-priority-based alternative for the important open system architecture.

We consider a photographic studio that must schedule multiple teams of photographers to a large number of elementary and secondary schools. The photographers' schedules are to be optimized so that time constraints are satisfied and each team is able to at least visit two schools daily. A multiple travelling salesman model is used where the total distance traveled and time consumed can be evaluated in a single cost function to achieve overall optimality. A genetic algorithm has been applied to solve the problem. The results show that this approach rapidly provides an effective means for solving the problem.

Sounds are very important in our daily life with a twofold attitude for any citizen. On the one hand, music sounds are considered to enhance the quality of life, but on the other hand, traffic noise deteriorates the quality of life. Due to those contradictory characteristics, the new concept of soundscape tries to combine both positive and negative aspects of the auditory environment. Presently, and more and more in the future, any urban planning activities must try to diminish noise levels everywhere in the cities and also outside, for instance at the vicinity of airports. Local authorities daily receive complaints regarding noise, but they generally come from very quiet precincts, and practically never from very noisy zones such as along busy highways. So, it is very important to provide the urban decision-makers with an objective tool to compare not only noise levels but also soundscape, and to simulate the auditory impacts of any new urban developments. The goal of this paper is to give the first elements of the design of an information system dedicated to auditory information for cities. The paper describes the importance of the urban soundscape, the structure of the information system and some elements for the visualization of sounds.

We describe direct extraction techniques for the most important parameters of a new physics-based polysilicon (poly-Si) TFT model, suitable for circuit simulation. The physics-based model covers all operating regimes using continuous functions, includes short-channel effects and has been validated for devices of channel lengths down to 2 /spl mu/m. In spite of a small parameter set, the model includes the necessary dependencies on channel length.

His other tasks have included the command and control for the AEGIS shipbuilding program systems engineering for the 21st Century Surface Combatant combat system survivability and the development of NATO standardization agreements for naval ordnance. He was previously a Senior Engineer with San Diego Gas & Electric with responsibility for its energy application and lighting programs. Prior to joining SDG&E Mr. Leite was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy where he served in operations and engineering assignments. Following active duty he accepted a Naval Reserve commission and has retired with the rank of Captain. His assignments included command operational and engineering tours. Mr. Leite has also served as an expert witness in admiralty and engineering matters. He is a gradate of the University of California Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from National University in San Diego. Mr. Leite is a Registered Professional Engineer in the States of California and Minnesota. Mr. Leite is a member of ASNE ASCE MORS the Illuminating Engineering Society and the U.S. Naval institute. Dennis Roy Mensh:is a Senior Engineer with PRC Inc. a division of Litton Industries in Crystal City VA where he supports modeling and simulation tasking for combat systems. He received BS and MS degrees in applied Physics from Lopola College in Baltimore MD and the American University in Washington DC. He has also completed the course work towards a Ph.D. degree in computer science specializing in the fields of Operations Reseurch Anabsis Systems Analysis and Computer Modeling and Simulation. Previously he was employed at the White Oak Laboratory of the Naval Surface Warfare Carter in Silver Spring MD where he worked in the areas of naval sensor and weapon system analysis

This paper defines, develops and examines a set of generic analysis tools that can be applied to Models and Simulations at the systems engineering level of fidelity. The tools examine the performance and effectiveness of Sensors;Weapons;and Battle Management, Command, Control, Communications, computers, and Intelligence ((BMCI)-I-4) systems and equipment. The Measures of Performance (MOPs), Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) and Measures of Force Effectiveness (MOFEs) were extracted from the Modular Command and Control Structure Paradigm which was developed at the Naval Postgraduate School. The paradigm provides for the development of evaluation criteria (MOPs, MOEs, and MOFEs) in a framework that ensures the traceability of system performance and effectiveness to the system operational requirements as specified in the Operational Requirements Document (ORD). Also, the analysis tools provide insight and valid estimates of numerical measures of the defined system functionality threads, which represent the system's operational requirements as specified in the ORD. The tools are directly transferrable and applicable to test and evaluation exercise events which are conducted in support of the development and acquisition of systems and equipment. Once the levels of system performance have been defined, the Paradigm generates a quantitative database that becomes a useful tool in system tradeoffs and selection. Once the alternative system suites have been defined, the suites can be analyzed in terms of system functionality threads and their corresponding performance capabilities versus cost.

A certain number of researches has been done to bring out explicit information by analyzing geometric properties and clustering spatial objects based on distances. However, clustering methods based on geometric properties do not provide enough information about the reasons of clusters, namely, influence of certain objects on clusters. This influence plays important role to understand the reasons of the patterns derived from distributions of spatial data. In this paper, we propose a spatial data mining method to analyze the influence between clusters and spatial objects and, consequently, to discover relevance among influences. To do this, we developed a method that analyzes influences between clusters and spatial objects based on distance. Then, we propose a method that discover relevance by separating complex clusters, which are caused by several spatial objects, into simple clusters, caused by single spatial object. © 1998 ACM.

In this paper we address the decomposition problem of electromyographic signals (EMG) and we present a new idea for the decomposition approach introducing the time-scale phase representation. Considering the nature of EMG signals, a special set of nonorthogonal conjugated basis functions is used to perform the time-scale analysis. Mapping the modified signal phase into the time-scale phase plane is applied. Its minimization leads towards a very good time localization of individual superimposed signal components.

Software reengineering for object-oriented rearchitecturing offers an exciting opportunity in migrating old legacy systems to evolvable systems in a disciplined manner. In the twofold-strategy software reengineering for object-oriented rearchitecturing, one of the problems to be solved is to derive a proper object-oriented model from the output of reverse engineering and the output of forward engineering. In general, the outputs of forward and reverse engineering can be inconsistent in their abstract levels, the amount of design information, naming conventions, and structures. In this paper we present an Object-oriented model Refinement Technique (ORT) to build a final object model in the twofold-strategy software reengineering. We first organize the information gained from reverse engineering into specification information tree, and then compare the entities in the specification information tree with the information from forward engineering using tree-structured data dictionary to produce the final model. We demonstrate the usability of ORT by an example.

Presents a methodology for data mining and knowledge discovery in large, distributed and heterogeneous databases. In order to obtain potentially interesting patterns, relationships and rules from such large and heterogeneous data collections, it is essential that a methodology be developed to take advantage of the suite of existing methods and tools that are available for data mining and knowledge discovery in databases (KDD). One of the most important methodologies is an integration of diverse learning strategies that cooperatively performs a variety of discovery techniques that achieves high-quality knowledge. The KDLC (knowledge discovery life-cycle) model is an extended study of AqBC, which is a multi-strategy knowledge discovery approach that combines supervised inductive rule learning and unsupervised Bayesian classification via a constructive induction mechanism. A case study dealing with crop yields for a farm in the state of Idaho, USA is presented, and preliminary results are visualized by using the ArcView geographical information system (GIS). The significance of the multi-strategy knowledge discovery and visualization process in analyzing the classifications and learned rules has been empirically verified in KDLC.
