The Wireless Integrated MicroSystems (WIMS) engineering Research Center (ERC) has developed a broad comprehensive MEMS and microsystem curriculum suitable for upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and industry professionals. Five core courses were in the initial curriculum design. The design had flexibility that invited development of other core courses, as well as related technical electives and breadth electives. The core courses provide instruction in MEMS, Microsystems, major design and laboratory measurements, and societal impact. The course enrollments have been strong. A master of engineering in integrated microsystems degree program was developed so that industry professionals would have a focused set of coursework, while providing flexibility that would permit custom tailoring of the total course package to serve specific needs. Distance education dissemination of the courses as whole courses, or as discrete portions of course materials, was intended to be available;that goal has been realized. The core courses originate at the University of Michigan (UM), and have been distributed to Michigan State University (MSU), Michigan Technological University (MTU), Howard University (HU), University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez (UPRM), and Western Michigan University (WMU). Rochester Institute of technology (RIT) has used materials from the UM core courses in its offerings. Other institutions that have used the course web-streaming video and course materials are University of Lille, Darmstadt University, and Middle East Technical University. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Many teachers and researchers put their teaching materials on the Internet for students to read in recent years. This sort of teaching materials could be seen as static because students can only follow the learning sequence made by teachers in advance. The goal of this paper is trying to develop a tool, K-Navi toolbar, to parse and rebuild teaching materials' hypermedia structures according to the concept relations and extracted rules automatically. K-Navi toolbar first uses the formal concept analysis (FCA) to parse the whole set of teaching materials and gets the embedded concept relations between each of two instructional documents; then uses the association rule methodology (ARM) to extract the rules from the concept lattices; and, finally rebuilds the hypermedia structure of the instructional document read by the student automatically. K-Navi toolbar adds related concept hyperlinks (or says links to other knowledge pieces) into the specific position on the instructional hypermedia document automatically when a student asks the document resource. A student then will be able to dig related knowledge pieces via these relevant hyperlinks.

High-throughput generation of new types of relational biological datasets is creating a demand for network-based signal processing and pattern recognition to provide new insights. Such networks are often too large to interpret visually and too complicated to be explained solely based on local topological properties. Just as signal processing and statistical techniques have been used in traditional, sequential-based biological datasets, so too are methodologies needed to automatically discern patterns in the huge, emerging networks. One way to do this is by transforming these very large networks into discernable epitomes, or abstracts, of the original networks. This work presents an approach for doing this via topological compression. Through capturing nodes' global topologies and subsequent compression, a new network epitome can be derived. Here, this is done with an E. Coli gene regulation network, resulting in biological findings that could not be derived from the local topology of the original network.

In this paper, we investigate the properties of lethal genes in E. coli, our model organism. Topological analysis of networks of functional interactions among genes has shown that lethal genes share common local connectivity properties. In this paper, we analyze cellular networks across three domains. We show that a stochastic global topological analysis, via random walks, is more effective at predicting gene lethality than simply looking at local topology using the standard hub-based method. We also introduce the possibility of using metabolic pathways to understand lethal genes, as regulating these pathways is among one of the most important functions of the gene-encoded proteins. Additionally, we analyze lethal genes in terms of the Gene Ontology (GO) and find that the graph forms two highly connected clusters that are each GO enriched for specific terms. We also find that lethal metabolic regulators are extremely enriched. Finally, we provide applications of the work and avenues for future research.

As a group, we will explore issues related to the fact that engineering and computer science is still very much a male dominated profession. We will explore these issues through a process of reflection and challenge. An interactive format will be utilized with attendees assigned to smaller discussion groups each led by a facilitator. Facilitators will be both female and male. A series of open-ended questions will serve as the starting point for the discussions with each group then asked to report back to the entire session as a whole

Students in the web-based e-learning environment might have their own learning paths due to the structure of the world-wide web. Students can choose suitable learning materials according to their different learning style. There are many researches about learning diagnosis in distance education and the main objective of these researches is to improve the learning effects of students. This research proposes a diagnosis mechanism based on the Knowledge Map and implements a feedback system in order to provide the remedy teaching materials in sequence.

The Collaborative Large-scale engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER Education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER Education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The NASA Administrator's Fellowship program (NAFP) research grant is awarded to faculty fellows upon the completion of their one-year resident research at a NASA center. The award provided a unique research opportunity, which is rarely available for faculty and students at community college level, for the author to conduct a research project at a community college. With the support of the NAFP faculty research award, the author was able to not only continue the NASA related research on optimum machining parameters, but also get students involved in the research project. In this paper, the author presents the research project and experimental results. In addition, he shares his experiences of how to engage and supervise community college students in research as well as lessons learned from the process. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

This paper addresses methodic implementation of a credible ISHM capability for elements of Constellation Systems. ISHM capability must be implemented by a combination of on-board and ground elements, each contributing to determining the health of systems in the most effective manner. Implementation of ISHM capability must evolve continuously to reach higher and higher levels of functional capability. The implication is that a sustainable approach must be defined in order to accomplish a believable capability. This paper describes the methodology, the elements, and the technology to implement ISHM capability throughout the life cycle of elements of Constellation Systems, reaching beyond individual elements that might have a limited life while the constellation moves on.
