The proliferation of online sensitive data about individuals and organizations makes concern about the privacy of these data a top priority. There have been many formulations of privacy and, unfortunately, many negative results about the feasibility of maintaining privacy of sensitive data in realistic networked environments. We formulate communication-complexity-based definitions, both worst case and average case, of a problem's privacy-approximation *** use our definitions to investigate the extent to which approximate privacy is achievable in a number of standard problems: the 2nd-price Vickrey auction, Yao's millionaires problem, the public-good problem, and the set-theoretic disjointness and intersection problems. For both the 2nd-price Vickrey auction and the millionaires problem, we show that not only is perfect privacy impossible or infeasibly costly to achieve, but even close approximations of perfect privacy suffer from the same lower bounds. By contrast, if the inputs are drawn uniformly at random from {0, , 2 k - 1}, then, for both problems, simple and natural communication protocols have privacy-approximation ratios that are linear in k (i.e., logarithmic in the size of the input space). We also demonstrate tradeoffs between privacy and communication in a family of auction protocols. We show that the privacy-approximation ratio provided by any protocol for the disjointness and intersection problems is necessarily exponential (in k). We also use these ratios to argue that one protocol for each of these problems is significantly fairer than the others we consider (in the sense of relative effects on the privacy of the different players). © 2014 ACM.

An equivalent circuit model is analytically derived for a clamped piezoelectric elastic shell with a spherical curved shape. The lumped parameters of the electromechanical elements are extracted from the system equations, and the analytical circuit model is compared with acoustic-piezoelectric FEM simulation results. Very good consistencies are achieved in the frequency responses, electromechanical coupled variations, and the device input impedances.

Based on a big data service platform for industry informatization, we made a comparative analysis between sensory and cognitive in online customer reviews of baby formula. Three aspects of the customer reviews are analyzed. In the first part, the descriptive analysis was conducted to evaluate the customer reviews propensity between sensory and cognitive;in second part of analysis, we made the comparison of the reviews propensity among buyers who have different frequency of consumption;Finally, the comparison of the propensity between buyers and sellers was made according to the base data from reviews and selling point index. According to this study, product brochures emphasize on the cognitive side of the infant formula milk powder, which is rather less intuitive and perceivable for average buyers than the sensory side. This analysis can guide the changing of promotion strategy and the design of the brochure.

Passwords and PINs are convenient and ubiquitous, yet they are quite vulnerable to attackers who stand near the user. This problem may be partially resolved by changing the user interface, but previous solutions of this kind still give shoulder-surfing attackers a significant advantage over brute-force search. We propose a novel solution based on 3D, especially suitable for glasses-free 3D displays found in many smartphones and handheld game consoles. A user at the “3D spot” may log in easily, while nearby shoulder-surfers gain no advantage. We perform a detailed experimental analysis of the usability of our scheme.

As the smartphone/cellphone market has exploded, the war on which smartphone platform will dominate has become fiercer than ever. In that vain, the goal of this paper is to answer two fundamental questions: What are the adoption trends for smartphones? And how can we estimate the demand for new smartphones? We answer these two questions by collecting a dataset of 3 million subscribers from a nationwide telecom operator. A key aspect of our work is that we have demographic information per user, such as income level, and age, which we correlate with phone usage patterns. Interestingly, we find that in all demographic groups, Android is leading platform top in all age groups and income levels. A key question is whether the “social influence” affects the choice of phone, which we find more pronounced in business plans. Finally, we develop a predictor to infer the phone a user will switch to considering: (a) the type of previous phone, (b) the social influence, and (c) the demographics of the user. Compared with the reference method, our predictor is effective in: (a) reducing the prediction error in number of phones by 1/3, and (b) in the case of minimizing phone costs, the monetary cost by half. Apart from its interest in observations, our work could help telecom operator forecast their inventory more accurately by pointing to the right properties to consider.

Purpose: A calibrationless parallel imaging reconstruction method, termed simultaneous autocalibrating and k-space estimation (SAKE), is presented. It is a data-driven, coil-by-coil reconstruction method that does not require a separate calibration step for estimating coil sensitivity information. Methods: In SAKE, an undersampled, multichannel dataset is structured into a single data matrix. The reconstruction is then formulated as a structured low-rank matrix completion problem. An iterative solution that implements a projection-ontosets algorithm with singular value thresholding is described. Results: Reconstruction results are demonstrated for retrospectively and prospectively undersampled, multichannel Cartesian data having no calibration signals. Additionally, non-Cartesian data reconstruction is presented. Finally, improved image quality is demonstrated by combining SAKE with wavelet-based compressed sensing. Conclusion: Because estimation of coil sensitivity information is not needed, the proposed method could potentially benefit MR applications where acquiring accurate calibration data is limiting or not possible at all. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The planning of goal-directed movement towards targets in different parts of space is an important function of the brain. Such visuo-motor planning and execution is known to involve multiple brain regions, including visual, parietal, and frontal cortices. To understand how these brain regions work together to both plan and execute goal-directed movement, it is essential to describe the dynamic causal interactions among them. Here we model causal interactions of distributed cortical source activity derived from non-invasively recorded EEG, using a combination of ICA, minimum-norm distributed source localization (cLORETA), and dynamical modeling within the Source Information Flow Toolbox (SIFT). We differentiate network causal connectivity of reach planning and execution, by comparing the causal network in a speeded reaching task with that for a control task not requiring goal-directed movement. Analysis of a pilot dataset (n=5) shows the utility of this technique and reveals increased connectivity between visual, motor and frontal brain regions during reach planning, together with decreased cross-hemisphere visual coupling during planning and execution, possibly related to task demands.

We present a mathematical programming-based method for model predictive control of discrete-time cyber-physical systems subject to signal temporal logic (STL) specifications. We describe the use of STL to specify a wide range of properties of these systems, including safety, response and bounded liveness. For synthesis, we encode STL specifications as mixed integer-linear constraints on the system variables in the optimization problem at each step of a model predictive control framework. We present experimental results for controller synthesis for building energy and climate control.

Along with the evolution of the Internet and its ever-increasing use, a significant trend to develop solutions to provide information is noticeable. This scenario increases information decentralization in certain contexts. Nowadays, information regarding music is available online in several online locations. In this context, this paper reports on the development of a web platform that centralizes existing information regarding events, retrieving other contextually related data available. Validated with both information retrieval quality and interface usability metrics, this project attained a more effective and complete concert search service according to the data provided to the user. It has revealed itself capable of retrieving information on more events, when compared to other platforms without a data centralization approach. According to the usability survey results attained, such as an 89 SUS scale score, it was proved that the developed service is provided with a simple and intuitive interface as well. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
