As server processor power densities increase, the cost of air cooling also grows resulting from higher fan speeds. Our measurements show that vibrations induced by fans in high-end servers and its rack neighbors cause a dramatic drop in hard disk bandwidth, resulting in a corresponding decrease in application performance. In this paper we quantify the performance and energy cost effects of the fan vibrations and propose a disk performance aware thermal, energy and cooling technique. Results show that we can not only meet thermal constraints, but also improve performance by 1.35x as compared to the conventional methods. © 2012 ACM.

We study two communication-efficient algorithms for distributed statistical optimization on large-scale data. The first algorithm is an averaging method that distributes the N data samples evenly to m machines, performs separate minimization on each subset, and then averages the estimates. We provide a sharp analysis of this average mixture algorithm, showing that under a reasonable set of conditions, the combined parameter achieves mean-squared error that decays as O(N~(-1) + (N/m)~(-2)). Whenever m ≤ {the square root of}N, this guarantee matches the best possible rate achievable by a centralized algorithm with access to all N samples. The second algorithm is a novel method, based on an appropriate form of bootstrap. Requiring only a single round of communication, it has mean-squared error that decays as O (N~(-1) + (N/m)~(-3)), and so is more robust to the amount of parallelization.

Stochastic models are often used to study the behavior of biochemical systems and biomedical devices. While the structure of such models is often readily available from first principles, several quantitative features of the model are not easily determined. These quantitative features are often incorporated into the model as parameters. The algorithmic discovery of parameter values from experimentally observed facts (including extreme-scale data) remains a challenge for the computational systems biology community. In this paper, we present a new parameter discovery algorithm based on Wald's sequential probability ratio test (SPRT). Our algorithm uses a combination of simulated annealing and sequential hypothesis testing to reduce the number of samples required for parameter discovery of stochastic models. We use probabilistic bounded linear temporal logic (PBLTL) to express the desired behavioral specification of a model. We also present theoretical results on the correctness of our algorithm, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm by studying a detailed model of glucose and insulin metabolism. © 2012 IEEE.

A k-modal probability distribution over the domain {1, …, n} is one whose histogram has at most k "peaks" and "valleys." Such distributions are natural generalizations of monotone (k = 0) and unimodal (k = 1) probability distributions, which have been intensively studied in probability theory and statistics. In this paper we consider the problem of learning an unknown k-modal distribution. The learning algorithm is given access to independent samples drawn from the k-modal distribution p, and must output a hypothesis distribution p{top}^ such that with high probability the total variation distance between p and p{top}^ is at most ε. We give an efficient algorithm for this problem that runs in time poly(k, log(n), 1/ε). For k ≤~O((log n)~(1/2)), the number of samples used by our algorithm is very close (within an O(log(1/ε)) factor) to being information-theoretically optimal. Prior to this work computationally efficient algorithms were known only for the cases k = 0， 1 [Bir87b, Bir97]. A novel feature of our approach is that our learning algorithm crucially uses a new property testing algorithm as a key subroutine. The learning algorithm uses the property tester to efficiently decompose the k-modal distribution into k (near)-monotone distributions, which are easier to learn.

This article presents a method for deriving the probability distribution of the solution to a Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equation for which the value conditions are random. The derivations lead to analytical or semi-analytical expressions of the probability distribution function at any point in the domain in which the solution is defined. The characterization of the distribution of the solution at any point is a first step towards the estimation of the parameters defining the random value conditions. This work has important applications for estimation in flow networks in which value conditions are noisy. In particular, we illustrate our derivations on a road segment with random capacity reductions.

We present a vision for the evolution of automotive diagnostics as car electronics are increasingly implemented as distributed systems. We first analyze the state of the art in the automotive development process, and we identify how distributed functionality challenges this process and leads to higher development and field maintenance costs. To address these challenges, we propose a modified development process that leverages a model-based approach. Finally, we outline future research directions for car diagnostics. © 2012 IEEE.

The development and update of reliable Geographic Information Systems (GIS) greatly benefits Intelligent Transportation Systems developments including real-time traffic management platforms and assisted driving technologies. The collection and processing of the data required for the development and update of GIS is a long and expensive process which is prone to errors and inaccuracies, making its automation promising. The article introduces a method which leverages the emergence of sparsely sampled probe vehicle data to update and improve existing GIS. We present an unsupervised classification algorithm which discriminates between signalized road segments (as having a signal at the downstream intersection) and non-signalized road segments. This algorithm uses a statistical model of the probability distribution of vehicle location within a link, derived from hydrodynamic traffic flow theory. The decision of whether the link has a traffic signal or not is taken according to model selection criteria. Numerical results performed with sparsely sampled probe data collected by the Mobile Millennium system in the Bay Area of San Francisco, CA underline the importance of the problem addressed by the article to improve the accuracy and update signal information of GIS. They showcase the ability of the method to detect the presence of traffic signals automatically.

Power over-subscription can reduce costs for modern data centers. However, designing the power infrastructure for a lower operating power point than the aggregated peak power of all servers requires dynamic techniques to avoid high peak power costs and, even worse, tripping circuit breakers. This work presents an architecture for distributed per-server UPSs that stores energy during low activity periods and uses this energy during power spikes. This work leverages the distributed nature of the UPS batteries and develops policies that prolong the duration of their usage. The specific approach shaves 19.4% of the peak power for modern servers, at no cost in performance, allowing the installation of 24% more servers within the same power budget. More servers amortize infrastructure costs better and, hence, reduce total cost of ownership per server by 6.3%.

This article presents a method for reconstructing downstream boundary conditions to a HamiltonJacobi partial differential equation for which initial and upstream boundary conditions are prescribed as piecewise affine functions and an internal condition is prescribed as an affine function. Based on viability theory, we reconstruct the downstream boundary condition such that the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with the prescribed initial and upstream conditions and reconstructed downstream boundary condition satisfies the internal value condition. This work has important applications for estimation in flow networks with unknown capacity reductions. It is applied to urban traffic, to reconstruct signal timings and temporary capacity reductions at intersections, using Lagrangian sensing such as GPS devices onboard vehicles.
