Machine learning and data augmentation in the proxy means test for poverty targeting

Recent years have seen increased interest in the use of alternative data sources in the definition and production of official statistics and indicators for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In this paper, we consider the application of data science to the production of official statistics, illustrating our perspective through the use of poverty targeting as an application. We show that machine learning can play a central role in the generation of official statistics, combining a variety of types of data (survey, administrative and alternative). We focus on the problem of poverty targeting using the Proxy Means Test in Indonesia, comparing a number of existing statistical and machine learning methods, then introducing new approaches in the spirit of small area estimation that utilize area-level features and data augmentation at the subdistrict level to develop more refined models at the district level, evaluating the methods on three districts in Indonesia on the problem of estimating 2020 per capita household expenditure using data from 2016-2019. The best performing method, XGBoost, is able to reduce inclusion/exclusion errors on the problem of identifying the poorest 40% of the population in comparison to the commonly used Ridge Regression method by between 4.5% and 13.9% in the districts studied. © 2023 - IOS Press. Real-time 3-D view reconstruction in an unfamiliar environment poses complexity for various applications due to varying conditions such as occlusion, latency, precision, etc. This article thoroughly examines and tests contemporary methodologies addressing challenges in 3-D view reconstruction. The methods being explored in this article are categorized into volumetric and mesh, generative adversarial network based, and open source library based methods. The exploration of these methods undergoes detailed discussions, encompassing methods, advantages, limitations, and empirical results. The real-time testing of each method is done on benchmarked datasets, including ShapeNet, Pascal 3D+, Pix3D, etc. The narrative highlights the crucial role of 3-D view reconstruction in domains such as robotics, virtual and augmented reality, medical imaging, cultural heritage preservation, etc. The article also anticipates future scopes by exploring generative models, unsupervised learning, and advanced sensor fusion to increase the robustness of the algorithms. © 2020 IEEE.

Document-level Relation Extraction (DocRE) aims to identify relationships between entity pairs within a document. However, most existing methods assume a uniform label distribution, resulting in suboptimal performance on real-world, imbalanced datasets. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel data augmentation approach using generative models to enhance data from the embedding space. Our method leverages the Variational Autoencoder (VAE) architecture to capture all relation-wise distributions formed by entity pair representations and augment data for underrepresented relations. To better capture the multi-label nature of DocRE, we parameterize the VAE's latent space with a Diffusion Model. Additionally, we introduce a hierarchical training framework to integrate the proposed VAE-based augmentation module into DocRE systems. Experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art models, effectively addressing the long-tail distribution problem in DocRE. In the recent days, most people of all ages have their mental health affected by various factors like stress, anxiety, depression, fear, phobia and trauma. Hence it is mandatory for people to take care of their mental health. People may hesitate to approach therapists in real life due to societal stigmas. As many people are unable to access or afford mental health services, our research work aims at developing a SAAC Mental health chatbot to mimic a therapist to provide personalized support and guidance, learn about an individual's unique needs and preferences, and tailor their responses accordingly with 24/7 support by handling speech and text queries. SAAC chatbot also maintains chat history and notifies users by sending alerts to ensure follow-ups. © 2024 IEEE.

Millibots, miniature robotic platforms, have emerged as pivotal tools in various domains, ranging from medical interventions to environmental monitoring. A Hybrid Relational Approach Toward Stock Price Prediction and Profitability

An accurate estimation of future stock prices can help investors maximize their profits. The current advancements in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) have proven prevalent in the financial sector. Besides, stock market prediction is difficult owing to the considerable volatility and unpredictability induced by numerous factors. Recent approaches have considered fundamental, technical, or macroeconomic variables to find hidden complex patterns in financial data. At the macro level, there exists a spillover effect between stock pairs that can explain the variance present in the data and boost the prediction performance. To address this interconnectedness defined by intrasector stocks, we propose a hybrid relational approach to predict the future price of stocks in the American, Indian, and Korean economies. We collected market data of large-, mid-, and small-capitalization peer companies in the same industry as the target firm, considering them as relational features. To ensure efficient feature selection, we have utilized a data-driven approach, i.e., random forest feature permutation (RF2P), to remove noise and instability. A hybrid prediction module consisting of temporal convolution and linear model (TCLM) is proposed that considers irregularities and linear trend components of the financial data. We found that RF2P-TCLM gave the superior performance. To demonstrate the real-world applicability of our approach in terms of profitability, we created a trading method based on the predicted results. This technique generates a higher profit than the existing approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

The traditional job recruitment process is time consuming and also undergoes certain difficulties such as data privacy, lack of transparency, and inefficient credential verification. These difficulties lead to mistrust and also delay the process of hiring. There is a need for improvement in this process that could benefit both the companies and the job applicants. In this paper, a decentralized recruitment platform based on blockchain technology is proposed. This proposed technique will overcome the above-mentioned difficulties by ensuring secure, transparent, and efficient connections between the recruitment companies and the prospective candidates. This solution uses the merits of blockchain i.e., immutability and automation to record job postings, applications, and hiring decisions on an immutable ledger, protecting personal data with cryptographic techniques and automating qualification verification with smart contracts. By implementing the decentralization concepts in Job recruitment, it is proven that the transparency in the interview process is improved by 9 0 and fraud risks are reduced considerably. Moreover, the efficiency of the entire job recruitment process is improved largely. Thus, the decentralized solution proposed in this paper demonstrates its potential in revolutionizing the job recruitment process by providing a secure, transparent and efficient hiring ecosystem. © 2024 IEEE.

As the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe,social media plat-forms became an essential source of information and communication for *** students,particularly,turned to Twitter to express their struggles and hardships during this difficult *** better understand the sentiments and experiences of these international students,we developed the Situational Aspect-Based Annotation and Classification(SABAC)text mining *** framework uses a three-layer approach,combining baseline Deep Learning(DL)models with Machine Learning(ML)models as meta-classifiers to accurately predict the sentiments and aspects expressed in tweets from our collected Student-COVID-19 *** the pro-posed aspect2class annotation algorithm,we labeled bulk unlabeled tweets according to their contained aspect ***,we also recognized the challenges of reducing data’s high dimensionality and sparsity to improve performance and annotation on unlabeled *** address this issue,we proposed the Volatile Stopwords Filtering(VSF)technique to reduce sparsity and enhance classifier *** resulting Student-COVID Twitter dataset achieved a sophisticated accuracy of 93.21%when using the random forest as a *** testing on three benchmark datasets,we found that the SABAC ensemble framework performed exceptionally *** findings showed that international students during the pandemic faced various issues,including stress,uncertainty,health concerns,financial stress,and difficulties with online classes and returning to *** analyzing and summarizing these annotated tweets,decision-makers can better understand and address the real-time problems international students face during the ongoing pandemic.
