IoT edge platform has become popular in various distributed environments. The edge devices need to communicate BigData among them or with the cloud servers by collaborating with AI technologies for finding events from the applications. Those devices exchange data streams from such as distributed sensors and remote image/video devices. We focus on an acceleration technique for the communication performance using a stream-based lossless data compression technology. This paper proposes a parallelization technique for the compression process in a software environment running on a multicore processor. The technique invokes concurrent compression processes assigned to multiple threads with splitting a data stream to chunks. The paper exposes three scheduling methods for assigning the chunks to the threads: in-order, hybrid and out-of-order. As an original data order of chunks must be obtained in decompression side, the proposed technique introduces packeting mechanisms in each chunk by adding headers to support the scheduling methods. Through experimental performance evaluations, we discuss the packeting overhead focusing on compression ratio and speedup by the parallelization with three scheduling methods.

Machine learning algorithms are fundamentally driven by the data provided by humans;consequently, the decisions made by those algorithms are not free from human bias. This is particularly evident in the case of facial analysis systems that employ machine learning algorithms. Recent studies have shown that the decisions made by many of the commercially available facial analysis systems are prejudiced against certain groups of race, ethnicity, age, gender and culture. Further studies have identified that the underlying reason for such biased decisions is that the open source material available for facial image databases which are used in commerce and academia to train the algorithms has meager diversity in these categories. To compound this issue, facial analysis technology is promoted by influential companies and artificial intelligence service providers without affirming the fairness and accuracy of the decisions given by these systems. To minimize bias and ensure representation of the Middle Eastern population in the imminent growth of this technology, we propose the development of two Arab face databases along with an algorithmic audit involving seven commercially available facial analysis systems. Of the databases, the first, Arab-LEANA, will include 300 Arab subjects' face images with variation in lighting, expression, accessory, nationality and age (LEANA). The second, Arab Public Figures Faces (APFF), will contain images and videos of 300 Arab public figures captured "in the wild". Faces for APFF will be selected manually from the internet since manual selection of faces will result in a high degree of variability in scale, pose, expression, illumination, age, occlusion and make-up. These databases will provide the worldwide community of face recognition researchers with a large-scale, diverse collection of Arab face images for training and evaluating algorithms toward developing a more representative, and therefore more robust, capacity for facial analysis. This study addresses the Testing Facility Location with Constrained Queue Time Problem. This optimization problem focuses on determining the best places to deploy testing sites and their available testers for infectious diseases, while constraining the maximum time in the queue with a given probability. An integer programming model is introduced and applied to the three biggest counties, in terms of population, of Florida, United States. Moreover, the Monte Carlo method is used to evaluate the model's output, aiming to check if the queueing time constraint is being satisfied. Through the experiments, a testing facility deployment plan can be determined for each county and further validated by the simulation. The results show that the solutions returned by the model behaved successfully when submitted to the Monte Carlo method, not exceeding the time in the queue in more than the predefined probability.

GANTEE: Generative Adversatial Network for Taxonomy Entering Evaluation

Taxonomy is formulated as directed acyclic concepts graphs or trees that support many downstream tasks. Many new coming concepts need to be added to an existing taxonomy. The traditional taxonomy expansion task aims only at finding the best position for new coming concepts in the existing taxonomy. However, they have two drawbacks when being applied to the real-scenarios. The previous methods suffer from low-efficiency since they waste much time when most of the new coming concepts are indeed noisy concepts. They also suffer from low-effectiveness since they collect training samples only from the existing taxonomy, which limits the ability of the model to mine more hypernym-hyponym relationships among real concepts. This paper proposes a pluggable framework called Generative Adversarial Network for Taxonomy Entering Evaluation (GANTEE) to alleviate these drawbacks. A generative adversarial network is designed in this framework by discriminative models to alleviate the first drawback and the generative model to alleviate the second drawback. Two discriminators are used in GANTEE to provide long-term and short-term rewards, respectively. Moreover, to further improve the efficiency, pre-trained language models are used to retrieve the representation of the concepts quickly. The experiments on three real-world large-scale datasets with two different languages show that GANTEE improves the performance of the existing taxonomy expansion methods in both effectiveness and efficiency. © 2023, CC BY.

The increasing use of IoT devices on future networks is very helpful for humans in their lives. However, the increase in devices connected to IoT networks also increases the potential for attacks against those networks. Vulnerabilities in Internet of Things (IoT) networks can be exposed at any time. Artificial intelligence can be used to protect the IoT network by being able to detect attacks on the network so that they can be prevented. In this study, network detection was carried out using the Deep Neural Network (DNN) algorithm. The test was carried out using the UNSW Bot-IoT dataset with a comparison of training data of 75% of the overall data. The results obtained show the ability of the algorithm to detect attacks on average with 99.999% accuracy. The validation loss and training loss look very small. In this study, there is a validation loss that still occurs in overfitting, but the difference is very small. © 2022 IEEE.

Eye-tracking holds numerous promises for improving the mixed reality experience. While eye-tracking devices are capable of accurate gaze mapping on 2D surfaces, depth estimation of gaze points remains a challenging problem. Most gaze-based interaction applications are supported by estimation techniques that find a mapping between gaze data and corresponding targets on a 2D surface. This approach inevitably leads to a biased outcome, as the nearest objects in the line of sight will tend to be the target of interest more often. One viable solution would be to estimate gaze as a 3D coordinate (x, y, z) rather than the traditional 2D coordinate (x, y). This article first introduces a new comprehensive 3D gaze dataset collected in a realistic scene setting. Data was collected using a head-mounted eye-tracker and a depth estimation camera. Next, we present a novel depth estimation model, trained on the new gaze dataset to accurately predict gaze depth based on calibrated gaze vectors. This method could help develop a mapping between gaze and 3D objects on a 3D plane. The presented model improves the reliability of depth measurement of visual attention in real scenes as well as the accuracy of depth-based scenes in virtual reality environments. Improving situational awareness using 3D gaze data will benefit several domains, particularly human-vehicle interaction, autonomous driving, and augmented reality. © 2023 SPIE.

We introduce a neural network model detecting Korean malicious bot account in Twitter. We extracted features from Korean malicious bot account in Twitter and implemented a model in the context of classification between human and bot account. This can be seen as an improvement of malicious bot detection, in an area of accuracy and multilingual aspect. We propose the zero-shot Vision-and-Language Navigation with Collision Mitigation (VLN-CM), which takes these considerations. VLN-CM is composed of four modules and predicts the direction and distance of the next movement at each step. We utilize large foundation models for each modules. To select the direction, we use the Attention Spot Predictor (ASP), View Selector (VS), and Progress Monitor (PM). The ASP employs a Large Language Model (e.g. ChatGPT) to split navigation instructions into attention spots, which are objects or scenes at the location to move to (e.g. a yellow door). The VS selects from panorama images provided at 30-degree intervals the one that includes the attention spot, using CLIP similarity. We then choose the angle of the selected image as the direction to move in. The PM uses a rule-based approach to decide which attention spot to focus on next, among multiple spots derived from the instructions. If the similarity between the current attention spot and the visual observations decreases consecutively at each step, the PM determines that the agent has passed the current spot and moves on to the next one. For selecting the distance to move, we employed the Open Map Predictor (OMP). The OMP uses panorama depth information to predict an occupancy mask. We then selected a collision-free distance in the predicted direction based on the occupancy mask. We evaluated our method using the validation data of VLN-CE. Our approach showed better performance than several baseline methods, and the OPM was effective in mitigating collisions for the agent. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Are gender associations in general language reflected in the words spoken to and by children? Previous work has suggested that language reveals gender differences in discourse, speech style, language use and acquisition. Work in artificial intelligence has shown that word embeddings trained on large corpora reflect human gender associations. We connect this work to developmental psychology by exploring whether gender associations in word embeddings are present in the linguistic input and output of children, and if so, how early gendered language emerges. We present a computational method that quantifies the gender associations of words and use a corpus of child-caretaker speech to show that these gender associations correlate significantly with those in word embeddings. We discover that gendered word use emerges in English-speaking children around age 2, and the gender associations cannot be explained solely by variables including word length, frequency, concreteness, and valence. © 2020 The Author(s)
