This paper presents a neural network approach for upsampling force data in vision-based force estimation for robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (RMIS). This interpolation enables sampling frequencies upwards of 500Hz, dramatically increased compared to modern vision-based estimation methods alone. With greater sampling frequency, force estimation can support direct force feedback options for RMIS (compared to current, indirect methods, e.g. visual or auditory), which may increase situational awareness and thus surgical performance. The proposed network is optimized and evaluated for its viability in two ablation studies with promising results, achieving sampling rates upwards of five times the accepted minimum rate of 500Hz for direct force feedback and absolute errors within maximum force granularity of 0.06N.

In order to reduce Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottle plastic waste, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) provided reverse osmosis drinking water in some buildings. Water monitoring is needed to keep the water quality. Therefore, a water monitoring system based on Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, and water flow was proposed. Since the UB buildings have good internet connection (WiFi), Internet of Things (IoT) was employed to the system to support real time monitoring. So, data of TDS, pH, and water flow can be periodically sent to cloud and displayed to a specific website. The system worked very well and the data can be summarized and used by operator as indicators of performance of the reverse osmosis machine. When water quality and performance decrease, operator must check filters membrane or water pump for further maintenance to support long life use. Although the sensors have been calibrated properly, some measurement errors occur. The measurement error percentages of TDS and pH are 0.62% and 0.94%, respectively. © 2022 IEEE.

With the rise of data-intensive services in mobile networks, the demand for intelligent and efficient learning frameworks has grown exponentially. Federated Learning (FL), as an emerging paradigm, enables decentralized edge devices to collaboratively train large models without sharing raw data, ensuring privacy preservation. However, deploying FL in resource-constrained mobile environments faces significant challenges, such as free-riding and malicious behavior. These challenges hinder model performance and raise concerns about data integrity and inter-user cooperation. To address these issues, we propose a layered dynamic framework for social mobile networks, called FedSMN, which aims to enhance the generalization ability of collaboratively trained large models in FL environments. FedSMN leverages Bayesian inference to evaluate user behavior and employs evolutionary game theory to simulate dynamic interactions, thereby optimizing cooperation strategies and reducing communication overhead. Unlike traditional approaches that assume fully rational actors, FedSMN accounts for irrational behavior and fluctuating resources, designing an efficient incentive mechanism to improve data utilization. Extensive experiments on large-scale datasets demonstrate that FedSMN increases model accuracy by 21% and reduces communication overhead by 49%, paving the way for scalable, intelligent mobile networks powered by large models. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Air pollution is a significant issue because it burdens human health and the environment. Particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller (PM2.5) can penetrate the lungs and enter the bloodstream, seriously affecting the cardiovascular system, causing strokes, and impacting the respiratory system. Modern individuals spend 70% to 90% of their time indoors, making indoor air quality even more important than outdoor air quality. To estimate and predict indoor air quality, this study utilizes low-cost, self-assembled air boxes based on the Internet of Things to collect various air quality data. The collected data is then used in an indoor air quality forecasting system that combines Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and K-means clustering methods to compare the overall performance of the algorithms. The experimental results are analyzed and statistically described based on each model method prediction accuracy and clustering results. These methods are integrated to develop an indoor air quality forecasting system to help indoor populations prevent issues in advance or optimize energy usage. © 2024 IEEE.

Computational music research plays a critical role in advancing music production, distribution, and understanding across various musical styles in the world. Despite the immense cultural and religious significance, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) chants are relatively underrepresented in computational music research. This paper contributes to this field by introducing a new dataset specifically tailored for the analysis of EOTC chants, also known as Yaredawi Zema. This work provides a comprehensive overview of a 10-hour dataset, 369 instances, creation, and curation process, including rigorous quality assurance measures. Our dataset has a detailed word-level temporal boundary and reading tone annotation along with the corresponding chanting mode label of audios. Moreover, we have also identified the chanting options associated with multiple chanting notations in the manuscript by annotating them accordingly. Our goal in making this dataset available to the public1 is to encourage more research and study of EOTC chants, including lyrics transcription, lyric-to-audio alignment, and music generation tasks. Such research work will advance knowledge and efforts to preserve this distinctive liturgical music, a priceless cultural artifact for the Ethiopian people. © 2024, CC BY.

In this article, we propose a normalized time-fractional Black–Scholes (TFBS) equation. The proposed model uses a normalized time-fractional derivative which has a distinctive feature wherein a weight function possesses the property that its integral with respect to time is always equal to one. This feature ensures a well-balanced integration over time and provides a fair comparison between different fractional orders. An implicit finite difference method is used for the numerical solution of the TFBS equation. We perform several standard numerical tests to examine the effect of the fractional parameter on the option pricing. These experiments are designed to investigate how variations in the fractional parameter influence pricing outcomes and provide valuable insights into the model’s behavior under different conditions. The computational results demonstrate the model’s potential for capturing more intricate market dynamics, which makes the proposed model a promising tool for financial analysis. A vast number of spatiotemporal datasets collected from a wide range of sources has motivated scientists to develop effective approaches to identify interesting patterns hidden in these datasets. In this respect, kernel density estimators, which belong to a class of non-parametric estimators in statistics, have been widely exploited in recent years. With this background, we have developed a novel kernel density estimator aiming to provide accurate analysis results. According to the evaluation with a real spatiotemporal dataset, which collected emergency medical service records in a county in the United States, the proposed kernel density estimator can approximate the probability density function significantly more accurately than a conventional kernel density estimator. Furthermore, we have exploited the proposed kernel density estimator to identify interesting patterns hidden in the real spatiotemporal dataset.

This research demonstrates the improvement in antenna gain by utilizing an EBG reflector. The EBG reflector includes a unit cell with grooves shaped like the letters M and W to mitigate surface waves at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The suggested EBG reflector is constructed on an FR-4 substrate exhibiting a uniform dielectric constant of 4.3, a loss tangent of 0.025, and a thickness of 1.6 mm. Furthermore, the impact of boosting the antenna gain can be analyzed by the reflection phase diagram, which exhibits values ranging from +90° to -90° at the resonant frequency of the reflector. The proposed EBG reflector comprises 5x5 unit cells. The testing results of the reflector's performance, when integrated with a general dipole antenna, indicate that it can effectively respond to the resonant frequency of 2.45 GHz, with a |S11| level below -10 dB within the frequency range of 2.2 GHz to 2.6 GHz, thereby adequately covering the IEEE 802.11 b/g/n band. The suggested EBG reflector exhibits a gain of around 6.5 dBi at 2.45 GHz, indicating its efficacy in enhancing gain relative to the standard PEC reflector. Moreover, the radiation pattern is also directional. © 2025 IEEE.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening condition that demands immediate intervention. The key to survival often lies in the timely and precise analysis of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals to determine the necessity of a shock from an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). In this paper, we address the critical need for improved accuracy in AED decision-making by presenting a novel approach that leverages the Hilbert Transform to calculate the slope of ECG signals by harnessing the analytical power of Hilbert Transformed ECG signals. By scrutinizing the heart's electrical activity through this method, we aim to enhance the AED's ability to differentiate between cases of ventricular fibrillation and other non-shockable rhythms, ultimately leading to more efficient and effective treatment. Our research explores two distinct approaches for signal analysis and correlates their findings to achieve higher precision in defibrillation decisions. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we employ a diverse and publicly available dataset containing various heart conditions, allowing us to demonstrate the robustness of our method across a wide spectrum of cases. This study represents a significant advancement in the field of automatic external defibrillation, with the potential to save countless lives through more accurate and timely interventions.

A coupled system of volume integral and two-fluid hydrodynamic equations is solved to analyze electromagnetic field interactions with non-local dispersion effects on semiconductor nanostructures. This coupled system, where the hydrodynamic currents and the electric flux are the unknowns, is discretized using Schaubert-Wilton-Glisson basis functions. Numerical results obtained using this solver show the presence of so-called acoustic modes at the frequencies lower than the resonance frequency of localized surface plasmon (LSP) mode. These modes cannot be identified if a Drude-like model or the single-fluid hydrodynamic equation is used to represent the electrical properties of the semiconductors. © 2022 IEEE.
