Modern design of nuclear facilities represents unique challenges: enabling the design of complex advanced concepts, supporting geographically dispersed teams, and supporting first-of-a-kind system development. Errors made early in design can introduce silent errors. These errors can cascade causing unknown risk of complex engineering programs. The Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) program uses digital-engineering principles for design, procurement, construction, and operation to reduce risk and improve efficiencies. Digital engineering is an integrated, model-based approach which connects proven digital tools such as building information management (BIM), project controls, and systems-engineering software tools into a cohesive environment. The VTR team hypothesizes using these principals can lead to similar risk and cost reductions and schedule efficiencies observed in other engineering industries. This research investigates the use of a digital engineering ecosystem in the design of a 300-MWt sodium-cooled fast reactor. This ecosystem was deployed to over 200 engineers and used to deliver the conceptual design of the VTR. We conclude that initial results show significant reductions in user latency (1000x at peak use), the possibility of direct finite-element-analysis (FEA) integrations to computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and nuclear reactor system design descriptions (SDDs) that we can fully link throughout design in data-driven requirements-management software. This study addresses the Testing Facility Location with Constrained Queue Time Problem. This optimization problem focuses on determining the best places to deploy testing sites and their available testers for infectious diseases, while constraining the maximum time in the queue with a given probability. An integer programming model is introduced and applied to the three biggest counties, in terms of population, of Florida, United States. Moreover, the Monte Carlo method is used to evaluate the model's output, aiming to check if the queueing time constraint is being satisfied. Through the experiments, a testing facility deployment plan can be determined for each county and further validated by the simulation. The results show that the solutions returned by the model behaved successfully when submitted to the Monte Carlo method, not exceeding the time in the queue in more than the predefined probability.

This study pioneers a high-performance UV polarization-sensitive photodetector by ingeniously integrating non-centrosymmetric metal nanostructures into a graphene ( Gr ) / Al 2 O 3 / GaN heterojunction. Unlike conventional approaches constrained by graphene’s intrinsic isotropy or complex nanoscale patterning, our design introduces asymmetric metal architectures (E-/T-type) to artificially create directional anisotropy. These structures generate plasmon-enhanced localized electric fields that selectively amplify photogenerated carrier momentum under polarized UV light (325 nm), synergized with Fowler-Nordheim tunneling (FNT) across an atomically thin Al 2 O 3 barrier. The result is a breakthrough in performance: a record anisotropy ratio of 115.5 (E-type, − 2 V ) and exceptional responsivity (97.7 A/W), surpassing existing graphene-based detectors by over an order of magnitude. Crucially, by systematically modulating metal geometry and density, we demonstrate a universal platform adaptable to diverse 2D/3D systems. This study provides a valuable reference for developing and practically applying photodetectors with higher anisotropy than ultraviolet polarization sensitivity.

Video super-resolution (VSR) is widely used in various high-definition applications, such as HDTVs and smartphones, requiring a dedicated upscaling technique for realtime full-HD generation. To reduce on-chip buffers for largesize output feature maps, a streaming VSR accelerator may employ an output stationary dataflow, leading to a large energy consumption caused by frequent filter switching. To mitigate this, we introduce a new filter-dedicated multiplier design for realtime VSR acceleration. We replace costly multipliers with adders, shifters, and multiplexers (MUXes), referred to as unified multiple constant multiplications (UMCM). The conventional UMCM, however, may incur considerable area/power overhead due to the unified topology constraint among different filter sets. To address this problem, we propose a new approximated MCM (AMCM) problem to relax the constraint and an approximate compatible graph synthesis (A-CGS) framework to efficiently solve AMCM by jointly searching for approximated filters and constructing a unified graph. Additionally, we suggest a lightweight finetuning method by freezing approximated filters and only finetuning biases, which can recover the original model’s accuracy within a few epochs. Experimental results with synthetic data demonstrate that AMCM reduces the area by up to 49.8%, 44.8%, and 40.3% when considering constant sets of 2, 4, and 8, respectively. Our designs with SR application achieve up to a 73.3% reduction in energy consumption. Experiments with the Set5 and Set14 datasets show that our model with bias correction achieves similar restoration performance compared to the eightbit models. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects a considerable percentage of women of reproductive age and is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, leading to symptoms such as pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea. The aim of this study is to develop a predictive model for the classification of endometriosis using four Machine Learning algorithms: Random Forest, LASSO, SVM, and Naive Bayes. For this purpose, a dataset from the Global Health Data Exchange was utilized, consisting of 1,000 cases of patients with endometriosis. The methodology included data cleaning and preprocessing, as well as the evaluation of each algorithm's performance using four metrics: precision, recall, F1-Score, and accuracy. The findings revealed that the Random Forest algorithm was the most effective in identifying endometriosis, outperforming the other algorithms with a precision of 0.99 for the “endometriosis” class and an overall accuracy of 0.98.

Capacitance-to-voltage conversion is essential for capacitive sensors in various industries, including touch interfaces, medical devices, and moisture measurement. However, circuit design faces challenges like non-linearity, noise, and small capacitance variations affecting voltage signals. This article proposes a phase-locked loop in free-running oscillator mode with a frequency-to-voltage converter to enhance accuracy and stability. Test results show a 97.9% measurement accuracy, demonstrating reduced noise and improved stability. The proposed circuit is ideal for high-precision applications in diverse environments, overcoming limitations of traditional methods.

Neuropeptides configure the feeding network of Aplysia. For example, egestive activity is promoted by small cardioactive peptide (SCP), and ingestive activity is promoted by a combination of feeding circuit activating peptide (FCAP) and cerebral peptide 2 (CP-2). In addition, SCP and FCAP/CP-2 have a common network effect that does not contribute to motor program specification. They increase the excitability of an interneuron, B63. In this report, we further characterized the effects of peptides on B63. We performed voltage-clamp experiments and used a step protocol to look at steady-state currents. We found that SCP and FCAP/CP-2 both induced an inward current that was virtually absent in low-sodium saline. Previous work has established that B63 is unusual in the feeding circuit in that subthreshold depolarizations are autonomously generated that can trigger motor programs. Here, we show that this autonomous activity is more frequent in the presence of peptides. Previous studies have also shown that activity of the feeding central pattern generator (CPG) can be initiated by neurons that excite B63, e.g., by cerebral buccal interneuron 2 (CBI-2), a projection neuron that triggers biting-like motor programs. Here, we show that the latency of CBI-2-induced activity is decreased by stimulation of the esophageal nerve (EN) (which releases endogenous SCP). These results, taken together with previous results, indicate that peptides that act divergently to configure network activity additionally act convergently to promote motor program induction. We present data that suggest that this arrangement facilitates brief switches between ingestive and egestive motor activity. © 2025 The Authors.

Stemming, an essential procedure in natural language processing (NLP), diminishes words to their base forms, facilitating tasks such as information retrieval and sentiment analysis. Although stemming techniques for highresource languages are well-developed, numerous low-resource languages, including dialect of Tulang Bawang, suffer from inadequate solutions owing to a scarcity of linguistic data and resources. Existing systems, including rule-based stemmers, have demonstrated efficacy in processing low-resource languages such as Indonesian and Javanese by utilizing established morphological rules. Nonetheless, these methods encounter considerable obstacles, such as restricted adaptability, inability to accommodate unusual root structures, and excessive dependence on fixed rules that might result in over- or understemming. Rule-based methodologies frequently misidentify roots when faced with intricate affixes or unconventional word forms. We introduce an improved rule-based Tulang Bawang Stemmer aimed at overcoming these constraints by enhancing current linguistic rules and integrating new patterns specific to the language's morphology. Assessed on 500 test samples and 200 independent test samples, our improved stemmer attained gold standard evaluation metrics of 96.2% and 94%, respectively, surpassing prior implementations in both precision and generalization. The findings demonstrate the potential of enhanced rule-based techniques to improving NLP for lowresource languages. Improved stemming performance enables better downstream applications, promotes more efficient text analysis, and advances research in underrepresented languages.

Performance in modern embedded systems, particularly those executing computation-intensive signal/image processing and machine learning algorithms, is critically dependent on the efficiency of multiplication operations. Serial multiplication offers key advantages in these resource-constrained environments, including low memory usage and minimal interconnect complexity. The most significant digit first (MSDF) serial multiplication scheme further enhances efficiency by enabling early termination and supporting variable precision. It is ideal for embedded applications where power and performance are critical. This paper proposes an auto-selection scheme for MSDF multiplication, where product digits are generated as a byproduct of residual maintenance, leading to speed, cost, and power efficiency improvements. We demonstrate the implementation of serial-serial and serial-parallel multipliers, where the multiplier operand in the latter is fully available throughout the computation. Simulation and synthesis results, compared to the most relevant previous works, show reductions in delay (16% and 20%), area consumption (11% and 23%), and power dissipation (7% and 20%), making our approach well-suited for embedded systems requiring efficient, low-power multiplication hardware. © 2009-2012 IEEE.

This study validates a fiber optics-based Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) sensor for detecting Salmonella in raw turkey samples. The sensor uses nanoantenna arrays on a side-polished optical fiber core with a fixed periodicity of 0.77 μm to maximize the SERS signal intensity. A 3D-printed chamber and microstructure optimize light reflection, improving sensitivity. The sensor detects Salmonella at 0.4-0.5 CFU/ml in 10 minutes, offering cost-effective, portable pathogen detection. © 2025 SPIE.
