3D human pose estimation (HPE) has improved significantly through Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs), which effectively model body part ***, GCNs have limitations, including uniform feature transformations across nodes and reliance on skeleton-based graphs that may miss complex motion *** address these issues, we introduce a Multi-Normalization Residual Graph Convolutional Network that fine-tunes the graph structure through affinity multi-normalization and activation, allowing the representation of additional connections beyond the *** extensive ablation study shows that this approach enhances performance with minimal overhead while maintaining the same model size, consistently outperforming state-of-the-art techniques on two benchmark datasets. © 2024 SPIE.

Dear Editor,Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex(PDHc) is a large multienzyme assembly(Mr = 4–10 million Daltons) consisting of three essential components: pyruvate dehydrogenase(E1p), dihydrolipoyl transacetylase(E2p), and dihydrolipoyl dehydrogenase(E3). These three enzymes perform distinct functions sequentially to catalyze the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate with formation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NADH) and acetyl-coenzyme A(Patel and Roche, 1990).

Nested hierarchical group-wise registration with a graph-based subgrouping strategy for efficient template construction

Accurate and efficient group-wise registration for medical images is fundamentally important to construct a common template image for population-level analysis. However, current group-wise registration faces the challenges posed by the algorithm's efficiency and capacity, and adaptability to large variations in the subject populations. This paper addresses these challenges with a novel Nested Hierarchical Group-wise Registration (NHGR) framework. Firstly, to alleviate the registration burden due to significant population variations, a new subgrouping strategy is proposed to serve as a "divide and conquer" mechanism that divides a large population into smaller subgroups. The subgroups with a hierarchical sequence are formed by gradually expanding the scale factors that relate to feature similarity and then conducting registration at the subgroup scale as the multi-scale conquer strategy. Secondly, the nested hierarchical group-wise registration is proposed to conquer the challenges due to the efficiency and capacity of the model from three perspectives. (1) Population level: the global group-wise registration is performed to generate age-related sub-templates from local subgroups progressively to the global population. (2) Subgroup level: the local group-wise registration is performed based on local image distributions to reduce registration error and achieve rapid optimization of sub-templates. (3) Image pair level: a deep multi-resolution registration network is employed for better registration efficiency. The proposed framework was evaluated on the brain datasets of adults and adolescents, respectively from 18 to 96 years and 5 to 21 years. Experimental results consistently demonstrated that our proposed group-wise registration method achieved better performance in terms of registration efficiency, template sharpness, and template centrality. © 2025

Infertile patients may be a high-risk group of mental disorder. The precise identification of the mental status of infertile patients can provide decision support to healthcare professionals and may be helpful in providing preventive measures accordingly. Rare studies focused on the mental status identification using artificial intelligence (AI) models for infertile people. This study aimed to precisely identify the mental status (anxiety and depression) of infertile patients using three AI models, the XGBoost, decision tree, and stacking models. The dataset, retrieved from a structured questionnaire survey in 2011, which included 400 infertility outpatients seeking reproductive treatments at three teaching hospitals in Taiwan was adopted for training and testing AI models. Aforementioned AI models were designed and reached identification performances of accuracy, precision, recall and area under ROC curve (AUC) equaling 0.75–0.82, 0.70–0.80, 0.64–0.72, and 0.64–0.72, respectively. The XGBoost model (accuracy = 0.82, precision = 0.80, recall = 0.72, and AUC = 0.72) outperformed or equaled the decision tree and stacking models in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and AUC values. Designed AI models for mental status identification can be integrated into the clinical decision support system (CDSS) to provide the anxiety and depression group automatically. Accordingly, the worsening of infertility-related anxiety and depression can be prevented. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Lilies are popular in the global flower market, but consumers often lack information about specific varieties. To address this issue, this paper proposes a computer recognition platform based on the Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture. The proposed platform uses an improved vision transformer (ViT) architecture to classify different types of lilies, allowing consumers to access information and names of various Lilium species. The experimental results show that the proposed lily classification model achieved a 96.4% accuracy rate in classifying six lily species.

Fate-tox: fragment attention transformer for E(3)-equivariant multi-organ toxicity prediction

Toxicity is a critical hurdle in drug development, often causing the late-stage failure of promising compounds. Existing computational prediction models often focus on single-organ toxicity. However, avoiding toxicity of an organ, such as reducing gastrointestinal side effects, may inadvertently lead to toxicity in another organ, as seen in the real case of rofecoxib, which was withdrawn due to increased cardiovascular risks. Thus, simultaneous prediction of multi-organ toxicity is a desirable but challenging task. The main challenges are (1) the variability of substructures that contribute to toxicity of different organs, (2) insufficient power of molecular representations in diverse perspectives, and (3) explainability of prediction results especially in terms of substructures or potential toxicophores. To address these challenges with multiple strategies, we developed FATE-Tox, a novel multi-view deep learning framework for multi-organ toxicity prediction. For variability of substructures, we used three fragmentation methods such as BRICS, Bemis-Murcko scaffolds, and RDKit Functional Groups to formulate fragment-level graphs so that diverse substructures can be used to identify toxicity for different organs. For insufficient power of molecular representations, we used molecular representations in both 2D and 3D perspectives. For explainability, our fragment attention transformer identifies potential 3D toxicophores using attention coefficients. Scientific contribution: Our framework achieved significant improvements in prediction performance, with up to 3.01% gains over prior baseline methods on toxicity benchmark datasets from MoleculeNet (BBBP, SIDER, ClinTox) and TDC (DILI, Skin Reaction, Carcinogens, and hERG), while the multi-task learning approach further enhanced performance by up to 1.44% compared to the single-task learning framework that had already surpassed these baselines. AV-CrossNet: An Audiovisual Complex Spectral Mapping Network for Speech Separation by Leveraging Narrow- and Cross-Band Modeling

Adding visual cues to audio-based speech separation can improve separation performance. This paper introduces AV-CrossNet, an audiovisual (AV) system for speech enhancement, target speaker extraction, and multi-talker speaker separation. AV-CrossNet is extended from the TF-CrossNet architecture, which is a recently proposed network that performs complex spectral mapping for speech separation by leveraging global attention and positional encoding. To effectively utilize visual cues, the proposed system incorporates pre-extracted visual embeddings and employs a visual encoder comprising temporal convolutional layers. Audio and visual features are fused in an early fusion layer before feeding to AV-CrossNet blocks. We evaluate AV-CrossNet on multiple datasets, including LRS, VoxCeleb, TCD-TIMIT, and COG-MHEAR challenge, in terms of the performance metrics of PESQ, STOI, SNR and SDR. Evaluation results demonstrate that AV-CrossNet advances the state-of-the-art performance in all audiovisual tasks, even on untrained and mismatched datasets. © 2007-2012 IEEE.

Data-Driven Incentive Mechanisms for Federated Learning in Vehicular Networks

Centralized machine learning algorithms in vehicular networks face privacy and resource constraints. Federated Learning (FL) addresses these by enabling collaborative model training without sharing raw data. To incentivize vehicle participation despite resource constraints, we propose a contract between Roadside Units (RSUs) and vehicles, specifying required computation resources and rewards based on local data quality. The contract is designed to maximize the utility of the RSU, subject to constraints that ensure the participation of the vehicles in the task and truthful reporting of their data quality parameter. However, designing an optimal contract with classical methods is limited to specific utility functions. To extend the design methodology of optimal contracts to a broader range of utility functions, our study proposes a deep learning-based solution. Specifically, we present a novel application of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), marking the first instance of applying DNNs in contract theory-based incentive mechanisms to achieve nearoptimal contracts. We design the DNN's structure to inherently satisfy specific constraints of the optimization problem, enhancing its efficiency and accuracy in determining the optimal contract. We utilize an augmented Lagrangian method to approximate the optimal contract in federated learning tasks. A case study on traffic sign recognition demonstrates the applicability and effectiveness of our method. Comparing our approach with the well-known generative diffusion model shows that in the FL scenarios, the DNN results are closer to the optimal contract compared to those of the generative diffusion model. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Vision-Language Models Are Not Pragmatically Competent in Referring Expression Generation

Referring Expression Generation (REG) is a core task for evaluating the pragmatic competence of vision-language systems, requiring not only accurate semantic grounding but also adherence to principles of cooperative communication (Grice, 1975). However, current evaluations of vision-language models (VLMs) often overlook the pragmatic dimension, reducing REG to a region-based captioning task and neglecting Gricean maxims. In this work, we revisit REG from a pragmatic perspective, introducing a new dataset (RefOI) of 1.5k images annotated with both written and spoken referring expressions. Through a systematic evaluation of state-of-the-art VLMs, we identify three key failures of pragmatic competence: (1) failure to uniquely identify the referent, (2) inclusion of excessive or irrelevant information, and (3) misalignment with human pragmatic preference, such as the underuse of minimal spatial cues. We also show that standard automatic evaluations fail to capture these pragmatic violations, reinforcing superficial cues rather than genuine referential success. Our findings call for a renewed focus on pragmatically informed models and evaluation frameworks that align with real human communication. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

This research examines the effectiveness of nitrogen annealing and Nafion treatment in mitigating Light and Elevated Temperature Induced Degradation (LeTID) in Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact (PERC) solar cells, employing a 30-kW photovoltaic (PV) system for evaluation. As a photosensitive device, solar cells are susceptible to damage from laser irradiation, leading to reduced photoelectric conversion efficiency, structural damage, and functional loss. To minimize this loss, nitrogen annealing and Nafion treatments were applied, followed by the analysis of LeTID effects on untreated, Nafion-treated, and combined nitrogen-annealed and Nafion-treated PERC cells. Untreated cells showed an 8 % fall in open-circuit voltage (Voc) and a 7 % fill factor (FF) loss. The combined treatment (Combination of Nitrogen & Nafion Treatment) improved stability, reducing losses to 6 % in Voc and 5 % in FF. The Nafion treatment yielded the best results, limiting deterioration to 4 % in Voc and 3 % in FF. PVsyst simulations, incorporating real-world data, confirmed enhanced stability and efficiency, aiding in optimizing PV system design and maintenance. © 2025 Korean Physical Society
