VivID: A Visually Improved GIF Encoding Network Design

Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) encoding is the art of reproducing an image with limited colors. Existing GIF encoding schemes often introduce unpleasant visual artifacts such as banding artifact, dotted-pattern noise and color shift, especially when the palette size is small. To address the issues above, we propose VivID, a Visually Improved GIF Encoding Network Design, which is compatible with exiting GIF decoders. VivID consists of three modules and two of them provide the functionality within the GIF encoding pipeline. Firstly, in order to reduce the color shift introduced by color quantization, we design the multi-palette extractor to create a GIF image with minimal distortion by extracting a near-optimal palette. This module can significantly improve the image fidelity and gains adaptability to multiple palette sizes after only one-time training. Furthermore, to reduce banding artifact and the dotted-pattern noise caused by dithering process, we propose banding remover which can randomize quantization error to neighbourhood by utilizing a learnable dithering pattern. Moreover, to further eliminate the banding artifacts, we design the banding scorer module, which is a novel metric for evaluating banding artifact and it correlates well with subjective perception. We adopt it as a customized loss for training dithering module. Extensive experiments across various aspects demonstrate that VivID produces visually pleasing results even when the palette size is extremely small, outperforming both traditional and existing learning based GIF encoding methods. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Vehicle to Everything (V2X) is a core 5G technology. V2X and its enabler, Device-to-Device (D2D), are essential for the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). V2X enables vehicles to communicate with other vehicles (V2V), networks (V2N), and infrastructure (V2I). While V2X enables ubiquitous vehicular connectivity, the impact of bursty data on the network's overall Quality of Service (QoS), such as when a vehicle accident occurs, is often ignored. In this work, we study both 4G and 5G V2X utilizing Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access New Radio (E-UTRA-NR) and propose the use of socially aware 5G NR dual connectivity (en-DC) for traffic differentiation. We also propose localized QoS, wherein high-priority QoS flows traverse 5G road side units (RSUs) and normal-priority QoS flows traverse 4G base station (BS). We formulate a max-min fair QoS-aware nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) resource allocation scheme, QoS reclassify. QoS reclassify enables localized QoS and traffic steering to mitigate bursty network traffic's impact on the network's overall QoS. We then solve QoS reclassify via integer linear programming (ILP) and derive its approximation. We demonstrate that both optimal and approximation QoS reclassify resource allocation schemes in our socially aware QoS management methodology outperform socially unaware legacy 4G V2X algorithms (no localized QoS support, no traffic steering) and socially aware 5G V2X (no localized QoS support, yet utilizes traffic steering). Our proposed QoS reclassify scheme's QoS flow end-to-end latency requires only approx 15% of the time legacy 4G V2X requires. © 2014 IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have found extensive applications across various fields, significantly enhancing the convenience in our daily lives. Hence, an in-creasing number of researchers are directing their attention toward the performance of sensor nodes, with a particular emphasis on addressing the coverage challenges in WSNs. Node coverage plays a crucial role in determining the detection performance of WSNs, making it imperative to attain maximum coverage with a given number of sensor nodes. This paper applies the Tumbleweed Algorithm (TA) to the coverage problem in WSNs and validates its effectiveness through simulation experiments. The results demonstrate its unique advantages in global search and avoiding local optima, providing a new solution for the WSN coverage problem and offering valuable references for future research and practical applications. The TA algorithm simulates the lifecycle of tumbleweed from seedling to mature plant and includes the concept of growth cycles. This paper compares the TA algorithm with PSO, GWO, DE, BOA, SCA, and AOA, setting different numbers of wireless sensor nodes and varying sensing radii for the experiments. The experimental results show that the TA algorithm significantly improves coverage rates under various configurations and consistently outperforms other commonly used algorithms. © 2025, Taiwan Ubiquitous information CO LTD. Enabling technology Integrated Learning for Autistic Children Using Augmented Reality Based Cognitive Rehabilitation

Augmented reality (AR)-based rehabilitation is an excellent teaching tool (ICT tool) for simulating daily activities for autistic children. Children with autism may become more mentally capable with this type of AR-based rehabilitation. It is intended to observe the children's performance in terms of concentration, attention, and identification. The observation has been done through placards as a target image to display the 3D objects on a mobile phone or tablet. In this project, observations are made for 21 autism children in the age group of 7–14, out of whom 17 are boys and 5 are girls. Those 21 children are given practice identifying 15 different objects in an augmented reality environment. Their performance was initially evaluated using conventional instructional techniques. The majority of the kids were having more difficulty identifying things during that observation. Then, with an Augmented Reality environment, the identical observation has been made once more. Using a mobile device or tablet, the 3D objects from the provided placard photos are produced in an augmented reality environment with animation and voice in the languages of English and Tamil. Children with autism are able to recognize and also grasp the behaviors of those objects while viewing them in 3D. Their efforts are measured using a two-point scale (0, 1, 2). The pre-assessment and post-assessment reports for the above observations are tabulated. All the observations are made in the presence of the special education teacher (therapist). However, the children observed in this project fall into three different categories: mild, moderate, and severe. In the Mild category, statistical significance is evident with p values of 0.002 in pre-assessment and 0.014 in post-assessment. Likewise, in the Moderate category, where p values are 0.023 in pre-assessment and 0.033 in post-assessment, significance is observed, as all p values fall below the chosen significance level of 0.05. The proposed work objective is to adapt Online social networking (OSN) is a type of interactive computer-mediated technology that allows people to share information through virtual networks. The microblogging feature of Twitter makes cyberspace prominent (usually accessed via the dark web). The work used the datasets and considered the Scrape Twitter Data (Tweets) in Python using the SN-Scrape module and Twitter 4j API in JAVA to extract social data based on hashtags, which is used to select and access tweets for dataset design from a profile on the Twitter platform based on locations, keywords, and hashtags. The experiments contain two datasets. The first dataset has over 1700 tweets with a focus on location as a keypoint (hacking-for-fun data, cyber-violence data, and vulnerability injector data), whereas the second dataset only comprises 370 tweets with a focus on reposting of tweet status as a keypoint. The method used is focused on a new system model for analysing Twitter data and detecting terrorist attacks. The weights of susceptible keywords are found using a ternary search by the Aho-Corasick algorithm (ACA) for conducting signature and pattern matching. The result represents the ACA used to perform signature matching for assigning weights to extracted words of tweet. ML is used to evaluate Twitter data for classifying patterns and determining the behaviour to identify if a person is a terrorist. SVM (Support Vector Machine) proved to be a more accurate classifier for predicting terrorist attacks compared to other classifiers (KNN- K-Nearest Neighbour and NB-Naïve Bayes). The 1st dataset shows the KNN-Acc. -98.38% and SVM Accuracy as 98.85%, whereas the 2nd dataset shows the KNN-Acc. -91.68% and SVM Accuracy as 93.97%. MA-MFIF: When misaligned multi-focus Image fusion meets deep homography estimation

Multi-focus image fusion is a technique that combines multiple out-of-focus images to enhance the overall image quality. It has gained significant attention in recent years, thanks to the advancements in deep learning. However, one of the persistent challenges in this field is the processing of misaligned data, which can negatively impact the fusion results. To overcome this problem, a novel fusion framework with pre-registration is proposed for the fusion of misaligned multi-focus images. For pre-registration, content-aware deep homography estimation is used, which performs transfer learning on a real multi-focus image dataset to adapt to registration under defocused conditions. For fusion, a fusion module with dual-branch feature interaction is utilized to avoid invalid feature fusion and trained on real light field dataset to achieve better fusion performance. Qualitative and quantitative experimental results show that the proposed method has a 2-3 percentage point improvement in multiple evaluation metrics compared to existing advanced registration and fusion methods, and a maximum improvement of 4.83 percentage points in fusion performance when tested independently on the Lytro dataset. Additionally, We find that the value of the Qcv metric is greatly influenced by the alignment status of the input images, leading to its inability to reflect the fusion quality of aligned images. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Multi-scale feature fusion for facial expression recognition

As an important computer vision task that can be used in many areas, facial expression recognition (FER) has been widely studied which much progress has been obtained especially when deep learning (DL) approaches have been introduced in FER. However, existing methods are restricted to extracting localized information or utilizing attention mechanism to focus on the region most relevant to the emotion, possibly resulting in errors in facial expression interpretation. Moreover, the inconsistency of image sizes in the wild FER datasets further increases the difficulty of the FER task. To address these issues, we propose a multi-scale feature fusion (MSFF) for FER. Specifically, our method first extracts features from facial images using multi-scale feature extraction to obtain rich multi-dimensional information. Meanwhile, extensive feature extraction at different scales is achieved by expanding the receptive field of the model, which provides the basis for more detailed analysis of facial expressions. Eventually, features at different scales are fused to enhance their synergistic effect. Subsequently, the adaptive extraction of comprehensive and valuable information from the fused features is performed, optimizing the performance of expression recognition. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on in-the-wild datasets.
