Finding the structure of parliamentary motions in the Swedish Riksdag 1971–2015

The current increase in the number of large, open sets of unstructured textual data has created both opportunities and challenges for social scientists. Here, we explore if and how we can use such data by looking at a dataset of over 144,000 documents used by parliamentary committees in Sweden. Of these, we aim to understand: (a) the topical content of these motions, (b) how these topics have changed over time, and (c) how these topics differ across political parties. To do so, we use a Structural Topic Model, which allows us to not only find the topics using the textual data itself, but also to include the documents’ metadata, such as authorship and date of publication. Doing so, we find 30 topics, which we combine into 9 broader themes. We find that these themes often rise and fall in popularity in line with historical events, and relate to the various political parties as we would expect. Throughout our analysis, we provide a step-by-step overview of how to use structural topic models in practice and also how to handle the type of dataset we use here. © 2023, The Author(s).

The rapid deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) requires careful consideration of their effect on cybersecurity. Our work aims to improve the selection process of LLMs that are suitable for facilitating secure coding (SC). This raises challenging research questions, such as (RQ1) Which functionality can streamline the LLM evaluation? (RQ2) What should the evaluation measure? (RQ3) How to attest that the evaluation process is impartial? To address these questions, we introduce LLMSecCode, an open-source evaluation framework designed to assess LLM SC capabilities objectively. We validate the LLMSecCode implementation through experiments. We find a 10% and 9% difference in performance when varying parameters and prompts, respectively. We also compare some results to reliable external actors, where our results show a 5% difference. We strive to ensure the ease of use of our open-source framework and encourage further development by external actors. With LLMSecCode, we hope to encourage the standardization and benchmarking of LLMs’ capabilities in security-oriented code and tasks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Modeling of on-chip interconnects in microarchitectural simulations is becoming more important. Chips continue to increase their number of cores, i.e., via 3D stacking and multi-chiplet integration, and their performance is gradually more affected by their network. However, existing simulation alternatives are either too slow for large systems or lack support for modeling interconnects, which is on its own a computationally intensive task. This work offers an open-source solution that integrates an accurate, widely used network simulator into an existing fast, parallel microarchitectural simulator enhanced with a new mechanism to make network modeling lightweight. It is based on the observation that a significant fraction of the network traffic has low contention and on the conjecture that the latency of such traffic can be calculated analytically with good accuracy. The proposed approach offers a mechanism to detect low contention traffic and analytically calculate its latency reducing the overheads of network simulation. In essence, it offers a knob for trading simulation accuracy for speed. This tradeoff is explored by demonstrating 2-4× faster simulations within 3-5% error in normalized IPC and 10-20% in average packet latency. Our simulation setup is an order of magnitude faster than an optimistic gem5 setup with point-to-point interconnects and 3× slower than a ZSim setup without network modeling. Our approach is further used to assess the impact of Networkon-Chip designs on system performance and shows that a 32-core system is on average 1.2× faster when using the current state of the art NoC instead of a baseline NoC. © 2024 IEEE.

Modern compilers often offer a variety of warning flags, which developers can enable to get feedback on code that, while syntactically correct, may be problematic. In the case of C++, one example of such 'correct but problematic' code is code that leads to undefined behavior (UB). The usage of compiler warnings has long been suspected as a way to decrease bugs and increase code quality. However, empirical evidence that supports this hypothesis is rare. In this study, we present evidence from a study of 127 open source C++ projects. We categorize their usage of compiler warnings into five groups based on which warning flags are being used, and analyse the relationship between compiler warnings and five quality metrics (bugs, critical issues, vulnerabilities, code smells, and technical debt) using Bayesian analysis. We conclude that, in general, compiler warnings indeed correlate with, and potentially cause, higher code quality, with the clearest impact being on the number of critical issues in a project. Using stricter warning flags expectantly correlates with higher code quality in our study objects. However, there are substantial differences between projects, which we attribute to the project's individual development culture. That is, while warnings matter, other factors such as quality culture, are likely to be even more important to source code quality. © 2024 ACM.

We investigate the behavior of methods that use linear projections to remove information about a concept from a language representation, and we consider the question of what happens to a dataset transformed by such a method. A theoretical analysis and experiments on real-world and synthetic data show that these methods inject strong statistical dependencies into the transformed datasets. After applying such a method, the representation space is highly structured: in the transformed space, an instance tends to be located near instances of the opposite label. As a consequence, the original labeling can in some cases be reconstructed by applying an anti-clustering method. © 2024 ELRA Language Resource Association: CC BY-NC 4.0.

A Graded Modal Dependent Type Theory with a Universe and Erasure, Formalized

We present a graded modal type theory, a dependent type theory with grades that can be used to enforce various properties of the code. The theory has II-types, weak and strong ς-types, natural numbers, an empty type, and a universe, and we also extend the theory with a unit type and graded ς-types. The theory is parameterized by a modality, a kind of partially ordered semiring, whose elements (grades) are used to track the usage of variables in terms and types. Different modalities are possible. We focus mainly on quantitative properties, in particular erasure: with the erasure modality one can mark function arguments as erasable. The theory is fully formalized in Agda. The formalization, which uses a syntactic Kripke logical relation at its core and is based on earlier work, establishes major meta-theoretic properties such as subject reduction, consistency, normalization, and decidability of definitional equality. We also prove a substitution theorem for grade assignment, and preservation of grades under reduction. Furthermore we study an extraction function that translates terms to an untyped λ-calculus and removes erasable content, in particular function arguments with the "erasable"grade. For a certain class of modalities we prove that extraction is sound, in the sense that programs of natural number type have the same value before and after extraction. Soundness of extraction holds also for open programs, as long as all variables in the context are erasable, the context is consistent, and erased matches are not allowed for weak ς-types. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has the potential to significantly enhance driver safety systems by enabling the detection of critical conditions, such as driver drowsiness and sudden illness, through non-invasive monitoring of cardio-respiratory functions. However, the dynamic environment within a vehicle, characterized by motion artifacts and varying illumination, presents unique challenges for accurate rPPG estimation. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive benchmark of various supervised and unsupervised rPPG algorithms using the MR-NIRP car dataset to assess their performance in automotive settings. Qualitative and quantitative experiments were performed to evaluate and compare several rPPG models designed in stable, noise-controlled environments, highlighting the impact of real-world conditions on model performance. Our findings highlight the promise of machine learning approaches, particularly neural network-based models, in overcoming these challenges and accurately estimating heart and res-piration rates in real-world driving scenarios. This study underscores the potential for integrating rPPG-based mon-itoring systems into vehicles to enhance driver safety and well-being. © 2025 IEEE.

In today's digital era, privacy concerns have raised and the further deployment of 5G technology in recent years has amplified some of these concerns. While encryption is undoubtedly the cornerstone for protecting user privacy, packet trace analysis has been shown to be capable of identifying web and mobile applications even when the network traffic is encrypted. We further extend previous studies by presenting an accurate traffic classifier for 5G packet traces that does not need any access to the network. Our novel classification method is based exclusively on traffic patterns and does not require any information from the network layer to function. We perform a preliminary experimental comparison study for the classification task with three machine learning models and eight popular mobile applications. Our best model reaches an accuracy of up to 87% in classifying one minute of captured 5G encrypted traffic. This prompts us to question if necessary measures need to be considered at the link layer so to alleviate to leak such information. © 2024 IEEE.

Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) in engineering is gaining significant traction. AI object detection methods can be applied in the engineering industry to extract information from engineering drawings, offering immense benefits to engineers. A promising application of AI in industrial engineering is symbol recognition applied to engineering drawings. However, these drawings often exhibit areas with a high density of symbols, as well as noise in the form of markups, indicating revisions. These factors could cause symbol misclassification or omission, impacting applications reliant on accurate symbol recognition. This study evaluates the accuracy of a symbol recognition model on engineering drawings called Piping and Instrumen-tation Diagrams (P&IDs) exhibiting varying levels of density and markups causing noise. Despite the assumption that density poses a challenge for accurate symbol recognition in engineering drawings, our study reveals that density has no significant impact on recognition performance when a dense detector is employed. In addition, we quantitatively show that markup-induced noise on engineering drawings negatively influences recognition accuracy. Finally, we provide recommendations regarding the applicability of symbol recognition in engineering applications. The study's findings and recommendations apply to any P&IDs, regardless of the standard used, as they were evaluated on various worldwide projects. Moreover, the research not only contributes to the advancement of symbol recognition on P&IDs, but also can be applied to other types of engineering drawings. Thus, it holds the potential for enhancing symbol recognition in various real-world industrial applications and research. © 2024 IEEE.

In the engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) sector, accurate cost estimations during the tendering phase are crucial for maintaining competitiveness, especially with constrained project schedules and rising labor expenses. Typically, these estimations are labor-intensive, relying heavily on manual evaluations of engineering drawings, which are often shared in PDF format due to intellectual property concerns. This study introduces an innovative solution tailored for the energy industry, utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-primarily deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) techniques-to streamline material quantity estimation, thereby saving engineering time and costs. Built on empirical data from a large EPC company operating in the energy sector, AI-based product development experiences, and academic research, our approach aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of engineering work, promoting better decision-making and resource distribution. While our focus is on enhancing a particular activity within the case company using AI, the method's broader applicability in the EPC sector potentially benefits both industry professionals and researchers.
