Fog Computing is now emerging as the dominating paradigm bridging the compute and connectivity gap between sensing devices and latency-sensitive services. However, as fog deployments scale by accumulating numerous devices interconnected over highly dynamic and volatile network fabrics, the need for self-healing in the presence of failures is more evident. Using the prevailing methodology of self-stabilization, we propose a fault-tolerant framework for control planes that enables fog services to cope and recover from a very broad fault model. Specifically, our model considers network uncertainties, packet drops, node fail-stops and violations of the assumptions according to which the system was designed to operate (e.g., system state corruption). Our self-stabilizing algorithms guarantee automatic recovery within a constant number of communication rounds without the need for external (human) intervention. To showcase the framework's effectiveness, the correctness proof of the self-stabilizing algorithmic process is accompanied by a comprehensive evaluation featuring an open and reproducible testbed utilizing real-world data from the smart vehicle domain. Results show that our framework ensures a fog system recovers from faults in constant time, analytics are computed correctly, while the control plane overhead scales linearly towards the IoT load.

Cold spray process, a method of coating reactive materials by shooting their particles onto a substrate, is investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. For this aim, we considered Ti nanoparticles (0.9 – 4.1 nm in diameter) and Si substrates of different orientations. We compare spreading, inter-diffusion, microstructure and stress as well as the particle and substrate surface temperature. It has been shown that practical spray velocities (V0 = 300 – 1200 m/s) are not sufficient to observe adiabatic heating at the nanoscale and higher V0 is required. Within the set of parameters probed here, we obtained the critical diameter and velocity for adiabatic shear instability to be 4.1 nm and 3000 m/s, respectively. For the first time, we demonstrate an oscillatory behavior in both the normal and radial stress components, which is an important step for a fair judgment of the hydrodynamic plasticity model of bonding. We also demonstrated the cold spray benefit in TiSi fabrication as an important Ohmic contact for semiconductor devices. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Grammatical Framework (GF) was born at Xerox Research Centre Europe in 1998. Its purpose was to provide a declarative grammar formalism for interlingual translation systems. The core of GF is Constructive Type Theory (CTT), also known as Logical Framework, which is used for building interlingual representations. On top of these representations, GF provides a functional programming language for defining reversible mappings from interlinguas to concrete languages, equivalent to Parallel Multiple Context-Free Grammars (PMCFG). Open-source since 1999, GF has a world-wide community that has built comprehensive grammars for over 40 languages. GF is also used in several companies to build applications for translation, natural language generation, semantic analysis, chatbots, and dialogue systems. The focus has been on Controlled Natural Languages (CNL), but recent research has also combined GF with statistical and machine learning techniques, such as neural dependency parsing. In this way, GF can scale up to robust and wide-coverage language processing, without sacrificing explainability. The tutorial is meant for an audience that has some experience with formal language theory and its use in practical implementations. However, it is self-contained and does not assume specific knowledge such as CTT or PMCFG. The structure is the following: 1. Hands-on introduction (45 min). Interactive coding in the GF Cloud to get an idea of how GF works. 2. Theoretical background (45 min). GF as a formalism and programming language, with references to its main inspirations (constructive type theory, Montague grammar, categorial grammars, XFST) 3. The GF Ecosystem (30 min). Software tools, on-going academic research, commercial applications, and open-source community activities. © 2019 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Data driven and experimental development practices provide effective means for companies to adopt a customer and market-centric way-of-working. In online companies, controlled experimentation is the primary technique to measure how customers respond to variants of deployed software. Over the recent years, and due to increasing connectivity and data collection from products in the field, these practices are being adopted also in software-intensive embedded systems companies. In these companies, experiments are run on selected instances of the system or as comparisons of previously computed data to ensure value delivery to customers, improve quality and explore new value propositions. However, to utilize the benefits of data- driven and experimental development practices, companies need to define what value factors to optimize for. For highly complex embedded systems with thousands of parameters, and with people at different levels in the organization having different opinions about the value of features, this is a challenging task. In this paper, we report on longitudinal multi-case study research in which we explore value modeling as a technique to help people in development, in product management and on the business level to align interests and agree on value factors. Based on this work, we identify five purposes of value modeling and how this technique helps accelerate critical activities in an organization. The contribution of this paper is three-fold. First, we provide empirical evidence for how value modeling is an effective technique to help companies define what to optimize for. Second, we identify five purposes of value modeling. Third, we identify the key challenges that the case companies experience when applying value modeling.

Machine learning and deep learning techniques are becoming increasingly popular and critical for companies as part of their systems. However, although the development and prototyping of ML/DL systems are common across companies, the transition from prototype to production-quality deployment models are challenging. One of the key challenges is how to determine the selection of an optimal architecture for AI deployment. Based on our previous research, and to offer support and guidance to practitioners, we developed a framework in which we present five architectural alternatives for AI deployment ranging from centralized to fully decentralized edge architectures. As part of our research, we validated the framework in software-intensive embedded system companies and identified key challenges they face when deploying ML/DL models. In this paper, and to further advance our research on this topic, we identify factors that help practitioners determine what architecture to select for the ML/D L model deployment. For this, we conducted a follow-up study involving interviews and workshops in seven case companies in the embedded systems domain. Based on our findings, we identify three key factors and develop a framework in which we outline how prioritization and trade-offs between these results in certain architecture. The contribution of the paper is threefold. First, we identify key factors critical for AI system deployment. Second, we present the architecture selection framework that explains how prioritization and trade-offs between key factors result in the selection of a certain architecture. Third, we discuss additional factors that mayor may not influence the selection of an optimal architecture.

Since the advent of mobile computing and IoT, a large amount of data is distributed around the world. Companies are increasingly experimenting with innovative ways of implementing edge/cloud (re)training of AI systems to exploit large quantities of data to optimize their business value. Despite the obvious benefits, companies face challenges as the decision on how to implement edge/cloud (re)training depends on factors such as the task intent, the amount of data needed for (re)training, edge-to-cloud data transfer, the available computing and memory resources. Based on action research in a software-intensive embedded systems company where we study multiple use cases as well as insights from our previous collaborations with industry, we develop a generic framework consisting of five architectural alternatives to deploy AI on the edge utilizing transfer learning. We validate the framework in four additional case companies and present the challenges they face in selecting the optimal architecture. The contribution of the paper is threefold. First, we develop a generic framework consisting of five architectural alternatives ranging from a centralized architecture where cloud (re)training is given priority to a decentralized architecture where edge (re)training is instead given priority. Second, we validate the framework in a qualitative interview study with four additional case companies. As an outcome of validation study, we present two variants to the architectural alternatives identified as part of the framework. Finally, we identify the key challenges that experts face in selecting an ideal architectural alternative.

We report preliminary results of extracting electrical parameters like DC conductivity, mobility, and carrier concentration of single-layer graphene using Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in transmission geometry. We utilize a simple Drude model and its extension, the Drude-Smith model, capable of accommodating charge carrier scattering by optical and acoustic phonons to describe the complex conductivity in graphene. We observed that a significant area of the sample scanned followed the Drude-Smith behavior, while at a few locations, the simple Drude behavior prevailed. We identified possible reasons that might contribute to this observation, like defects, the presence of polymer residue on the sample, or the sample strain. This research sheds new light on our understanding of graphene's electrical properties and lays the foundation for future investigations addressing defects and contaminants in graphene samples.

Partial Univalence in n-truncated Type Theory

It is well known that univalence is incompatible with uniqueness of identity proofs (UIP), the axiom that all types are h-sets. This is due to finite h-sets having non-trivial automorphisms as soon as they are not h-propositions. A natural question is then whether univalence restricted to h-propositions is compatible with UIP. We answer this affirmatively by constructing a model where types are elements of a closed universe defined as a higher inductive type in homotopy type theory. This universe has a path constructor for simultaneous "partial" univalent completion, i.e., restricted to h-propositions. More generally, we show that univalence restricted to (n− 1)-types is consistent with the assumption that all types are n-truncated. Moreover we parametrize our construction by a suitably well-behaved container, to abstract from a concrete choice of type formers for the universe. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Reinforcement learning (RL) is a powerful paradigm that has gained popularity across multiple domains. However, applying RL may come at a cost of multiple interactions between the agent and the environment. This cost can be especially pronounced when the single feedback from the environment is slow or computationally expensive, causing extensive periods of nonproductivity. Curriculum learning (CL) provides a suitable alternative by arranging a sequence of tasks of increasing complexity with the aim of reducing the overall cost of learning. Here, we demonstrate the application of CL for drug discovery. We implement CL in the de novo design platform, REINVENT, and apply it on illustrative de novo molecular design problems of different complexity. The results show both accelerated learning and a positive impact on the quality of the output when compared to standard policy based RL. To our knowledge, this is the first application of CL for the purposes of de novo molecular design. The code is freely available at https://***/MolecularAI/Reinvent. © 2021, CC BY.
