Collaboration between software engineering researchers and industry is notoriously difficult to scale beyond ad-hoc connections between individual researchers and companies. Software Center in Gothenburg, Sweden has over the last years built up a scaling research collaboration between eight international companies and three universities. Several elements underlie the success of the center, including the adoption of a sprint model, the role of industry in steering projects and the organization around a common conceptual model.

Research has shown that up to two thirds of features in software systems are hardly ever used or not even used at all. This represents a colossal waste of R&D resources and occurs across the industry. On the other hand, product management and many others work hard at interacting with customers, building business cases and prioritizing requirements. A fundamentally different approach to deciding what to build is required: requirements should be treated as hypothesis throughout the development process and constant feedback from users and systems in the field should be collected to dynamically reprioritize and change requirements. This requires architectural support beyond the current state of practice as continuous deployment, split testing and data collection need to be an integral part of the architecture. In this paper, we present a brief overview of our research and industry collaboration to address this challenge.

In today's business environment, value creation is a collaborative effort in which companies depend on a number of external stakeholders. This implies a shift towards inter-organizational relationships and dependencies between companies. In this shift, companies seek strategies for how to effectively coordinate standardization efforts, share maintenance costs, and engage in open innovation initiatives, while at the same time increase control and accelerate development of differentiating functionality. On the basis of a multi-case study in six B2B software development companies, this paper explores the challenges involved in managing different ecosystem types. Based on the 'Three Layer Product Model' [1], we distinguish between innovation ecosystems, differentiating ecosystems and commoditizing ecosystems. We outline the challenges the companies experience in managing these, and we develop a model in which we identify the drivers, the purpose, the stakeholders and the characteristics of each ecosystem type.

A known problem in large software companies is to balance the prioritization of short-term with long-term viability. Specifically, architecture violations (Architecture Technical Debt) taken to deliver fast might hinder future feature development. However, some technical debt requires more interest to be paid than other. We have investigated which Technical Debt items generate more effort and how this effort is manifested during software development. We conducted a multiple-case embedded case study comprehending 7 sites at 5 large international software companies. We found that some Technical Debt items are contagious, causing other parts of the system to be contaminated with the same problem, which may lead to non-linear growth of interest. We also identify another socio-technical phenomenon, for which a combination of weak awareness of debt, time pressure and refactoring creates Vicious Circles of events during the development. Such phenomena need to be identified and stopped before the development is led to a crisis point. Finally, this paper presents a taxonomy of the most dangerous items identified during the qualitative investigation and a model of their effects that can be used for prioritization, for further investigation and as a quality model for extracting more precise and context-specific metrics.

Customer involvement in software development is essential for building successful software products. Incremental improvements and enhancements of software require an in-depth and continuous understanding of customer needs. Also, mechanisms for managing customer feedback data need to be in place. However, previous research shows that the feedback loops from customers are slow and the process for obtaining timely feedback is challenging. In this study, we investigate customer feedback mechanisms and the ways in which customer data can be used to inform continuous improvement of software products. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we present a multiple-case study conducted in five Finnish software companies, where we identify how customer feedback data is collected and used in different product development activities. Second, we provide an explanatory 'customer touch point' (CTP) model which provides an overall understanding of customer feedback data collection and the related challenges in the case companies during software development.

Self-driving vehicles for commercial use cases like logistics or overcast mines increase their owners' economic competitiveness. Volvo maintains, evolves, and distributes a vehicle control product line for different brands like Volvo Trucks, Renault, and Mack in more than 190 markets world-wide. From the different application domains of their customers originates the need for a multi-domain reference architecture concerned with transport mission planning, execution, and tracking on top of the vehicle control product line. This industrial case study is the first of its kind reporting about the systematic process to design such a reference architecture involving all relevant external and internal stakeholders, development documents, low level artifacts, and literature. Quantitative and qualitative metrics were applied to evaluate non-functional requirements on the reference architecture level before a concrete variant was evaluated using a Volvo FMX truck in an exemplary construction site setting.

Molecular crystals are a prototypical class of van der Waals (vdW) bound organic materials with excited-state properties relevant for optoelectronics applications. Predicting the structure and excited-state properties of molecular crystals presents a challenge for electronic structure theory, as standard approximations to density functional theory (DFT) do not capture long-range vdW dispersion interactions and do not yield excited-state properties. In this work, we use a combination of DFT including vdW forces, using both nonlocal correlation functionals and pairwise correction methods, together with many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) to study the geometry and excited states, respectively, of the entire series of oligoacene crystals, from benzene to hexacene. We find that vdW methods can predict lattice constants within 1% of the experimental measurements, on par with the previously reported accuracy of pairwise approximations for the same systems. We further find that excitation energies are sensitive to geometry, but if optimized geometries are used MBPT can yield excited-state properties within a few tenths of an eV from experiment. We elucidate trends in MBPT-computed charged and neutral excitation energies across the acene series and discuss the role of common approximations used in MBPT.

In modern safety-critical embedded systems reliability and performance are two important criteria. In many systems based on off-the-shelf processors software implemented error recovery is the only option to improve the reliability of the system. However, software methods typically introduce large performance overheads. Another important factor in error recovery schemes is the recovery time, especially in systems with real-time requirements. A key observation that helps improve software recovery methods is that only a defined number of locations in the program are susceptible to errors. In this paper we propose a fast software recovery scheme that instruments the program only at locations vulnerable to control-flow errors. We use a systematic bit-flip analysis to identify the exact locations susceptible to control-flow errors in a given program. This helps us to instrument the code with minimal overheads, while maintaining high-level of correct-ability and low recovery times. Our experiments show that using the result of our bit-flip analysis and limiting the code instrumentation to only the susceptible locations improves the efficiency by a factor of 80 when compared to the latest control-flow error recovery methods.

Architectural Technical Debt has recently received the attention of the scientific community, as a suitable metaphor for describing sub-optimal architectural solutions having short-term benefits but causing a long-term negative impact. We study such phenomenon in the context of Volvo Car Group, where the development of modern cars includes complex systems with mechanical components, electronics and software working together in a complicated network to perform an increasing number of functions and meet the demands of many customers. This puts high requirements on having an architecture and design that can handle these demands. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to manage Architecture Technical Debt, in order to make sure that the advantages of sub-optimal solutions do not lead to the payment of a large interest. We conducted a case study at Volvo Car Group and we discovered that architectural violations in the detailed design had an impact on the efficiency of the communication between components, which is an essential quality in cars and other embedded systems. Such interest is not studied in literature, which usually focuses on the maintainability aspects of Technical Debt. To explore how this Architectural Technical Debt and its interest could be communicated to stakeholders, we developed a visual tool. We found that not only was the Architectural Debt highly interesting for the architects and other stakeholders at VCG, but the proposed visualization was useful in increasing the awareness of the impact that Architectural Technical Debt had on efficiency.

The problem of finding a maximum cardinality stable matching in the presence of ties and unacceptable partners, called MAX SMTI, is a well-studied NP-hard problem. The MAX SMTI is NP-hard even for highly restricted instances where (i) ties appear only in women's preference lists and (ii) each tie appears at the end of each woman's preference list. The current best lower bounds on the approximation ratio for this variant are 1.1052 unless P=NP and 1.25 under the unique games conjecture, while the current best upper bound is 1.4616. In this paper, we improve the upper bound to 1.25, which matches the lower bound under the unique games conjecture. Note that this is the first special case of the MAX SMTI where the tight approximation bound is obtained. The improved ratio is achieved via a new analysis technique, which avoids the complicated case-by-case analysis used in earlier studies. As a by-product of our analysis, we show that the integrality gap of natural IP and LP formulations for this variant is 1.25. We also show that the unrestricted MAX SMTI cannot be approximated with less than 1.5 unless the approximation ratio of a certain special case of the minimum maximal matching problem can be improved. © Chien-Chung Huang, Kazuo Iwama, Shuichi Miyazaki, and Hiroki Yanagisawa.
