This paper presents a CAD-based approach for automated surface defect detection. We leverage the a-priori knowledge embedded in a CAD model and integrate it with point cloud data acquired from commercially available stereo and depth cameras. The proposed method first transforms the CAD model into a high-density polygonal mesh, where each vertex represents a state variable in 3D space. Subsequently, a weighted least squares algorithm is employed to iteratively estimate the state of the scanned workpiece based on the captured point cloud measurements. This framework offers the potential to incorporate information from diverse sensors into the CAD domain, facilitating a more comprehensive analysis. Preliminary results demonstrate promising performance, with the algorithm achieving convergence to a sub-millimeter standard deviation in the region of interest using only approximately 50 point cloud samples. This highlights the potential of utilising commercially available stereo cameras for high-precision quality control applications. © 2025

Ethics has long been recognized as crucial to responsible engineering, but the increasingly globalized environments present challenges to effective engineering ethics training. This paper is part of a larger research project that aims to examine the effects of culture and education on ethics training in undergraduate engineering students at universities in the United States, China, and the Netherlands. We are interested in how students’ curricular and extra-curricular (e.g., internships, service projects) experiences and training impact their ethical reasoning and moral dispositions, and how this differs cross-culturally. To understand this, we are conducting mixed methods research longitudinally over four years to engineering students at our participating universities to gauge their moral dispositions and ethical reasoning skills and to measure any change in these. This work-in-progress paper, however, is not about the direct outcomes of this research project. Rather, it critically examines our own practices and methods in doing this research. We begin the paper by briefly introducing the larger research project and motivating the use of comparative, multi-institutional case studies as necessary for contextualizing, complementing, and interpreting quantitative data on ethical reasoning and moral dispositions. Because the conditions related to engineering ethics education differ widely per participating institution for institutional (and also likely cultural) reasons, interpreting and analyzing quantitative survey data will require understanding contextual conditions of education at each institution. Comparative case studies can supply missing contextual information to provide a more complete picture of the engineering ethics educational contexts, strategies, and practices at each of the participating universities. In realistic conversations, “responses” are closely related to persona and context. However, current personalized dialogue generation methods only focus on the consistency of the persona of responses and yet ignore context coherence, as may produce low-quality responses. To address the issue, we propose a novel model, named PCF (Persona and Context Fusion), which builds two decoders for understanding personality consistency and context coherence respectively on a common encoder-decoder architecture. In this model, an inter-layer attention fusion mechanism is designed for the two decoders to effectively fuse persona and context, and a decoupled way of training is conducted on an additional large-scale non-dialogue inference dataset to enhance the consistent understanding ability of the two decoders. Furthermore, considering that generating responses may be tedious, the ScaleGrad loss function is applied to enhance the diversity of responses. Experimental results on two publicly available datasets show that the dialogues generated by our PCF are significantly higher in quality than strong baselines.

From Reader to Experiencer: Design and Evaluation of an Interactive Vr Story for Promoting the Situation Awareness of Public Health Threats

Informing people of health threats is crucial as they may lack situation awareness (SA) of risky situations when they do not have personal experiences or lessons learned from dangerous encounters. In this work, we explored the potential of using an interactive VR (Virtual Reality) story to raise people's SA of health risks. We first worked with seven participants to iteratively design the immersive story and summarized five design considerations. Then, we implemented the VR story with five design features referring to the design considerations. Using a between-subjects study (N=62), we evaluated the effects of the VR story on raising SA and investigated the role of each design feature. Our results show that the VR story can promote SA by enhancing people's connection to risky situations. Design features such as immersive visualizations, multiple perspectives, and embodied interactions contribute to this connection. Drawing on qualitative and quantitative findings, we discuss the implications of designing VR stories for promoting public health. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Trace data is crucial for system observability and maintainability within microservices architectures, and many operation algorithms depend heavily on trace data, including anomaly detection, root cause analysis, etc. However, the actual performance of these algorithms might be unsatisfactory due to the absence of high-quality labeled datasets for effective training and evaluation. Since billions of traces could be generated daily for large-scale microservices, labeling overhead is the main hurdle to obtaining high-quality trace *** this paper, we propose LabelEase, a novel semi-automatic trace labeling tool, which uses active learning techniques to achieve efficient and accurate trace labeling. For anomaly trace labeling, LabelEase clusters similar traces with a graph-based trace representation technique and selects a few representative traces for human labeling, avoiding labeling most of the traces. For root cause labeling, LabelEase aggregates the labeled anomalous traces and identifies the service’s failures for operators to label. Our systematic experiments on two large-scale datasets show that LabelEase achieves over 0.98 F 1 -score in anomaly trace labeling and 0.89 precision of failure detection in root cause labeling, LabelEase can reduce operators’ labeling overhead by more than 99.9%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose a semi-automatic trace labeling tool capable of achieving efficient and accurate trace labeling.

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a series of clinical syndromes caused by obstruction of the hepatic vein and/or hepatic segment inferior vena cava,which can seriously damage the health of the body and lead to patient death[1].Over recent years,with the improvement of diagnostic technology,especially the introduction of multidisciplinary intervention methods,more and more potential cases have been discovered and treated[2].However,conventional clinical diagnosis is usually based on traditional indicators[3],and diagnostic criteria are largely dependent on the results of statistical analyses,often ignoring the importance of the association between different factors[4],especially high-risk factors,and the disease[5].Effectively capturing the critical factors that contribute to disease occurrence is the challenge for improving the predictive performance of BCS.

With advancements in interactive technologies, research in human-food interaction (HFI) has begun to employ interactive sound to enrich the dining experience. However, chefs' creative use of this sonic interactivity as a new "ingredient"in their culinary practices remains underexplored. In response, we conducted an empirical study with six pairs of chefs and diners utilizing SoniCream, an ice cream cone that plays digital sounds while consuming. Through exploration, creation, collaboration, and reflection, we identified four themes concerning culinary creativity, dining experience, interactive sonic gastronomy deployment, and chef-diner interplay. Building on the discussions at the intersection of these themes, we derived four design implications for creating interactive systems that could support chefs' culinary creativity, thereby enriching dining experiences. The recent popularity of soft robots for marine applications has established a need for the reliable fabrication of actuators that enable locomotion, articulation, and grasping in aquatic environments. These actuators should also reduce the negative impact on sensitive ecosystems by using biodegradable materials such as organic hydrogels. Freeform Reversible Embedding of Suspended Hydrogels (FRESH) printing can be used for additive manufacturing of small-scale biologically derived, marine-sourced hydraulic actuators by printing thin-wall structures out of sustainably sourced calcium-alginate hydrogels. However, controlling larger alginate robots with complex geometries and multiple actuation mechanisms remains challenging due to the reduced strength of such soft structures. For tethered hydrogel hydraulic robots, a direct interface with fluid lines is necessary for actuation, but the drag forces associated with tethered lines can quickly overcome the actuation force of distal and extremity structures. To overcome this challenge, in this study, we identify printing parameters and interface geometries to allow the working fluid to be channeled to distal components of FRESH-printed alginate robots and demonstrate a proof-of-concept biodegradable robotic arm for small object manipulation and grasping in marine environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

LGBTQ+ people have received increased attention in HCI research, paralleling a greater emphasis on social justice in recent years. However, there has not been a systematic review of how LGBTQ+ people are researched or discussed in HCI. In this work, we review all research mentioning LGBTQ+ people across the HCI venues of CHI, CSCW, DIS, and TOCHI. Since 2014, we find a linear growth in the number of papers substantially about LGBTQ+ people and an exponential increase in the number of mentions. Research about LGBTQ+ people tends to center experiences of being politicized, outside the norm, stigmatized, or highly vulnerable. LGBTQ+ people are typically mentioned as a marginalized group or an area of future research. We identify gaps and opportunities for (1) research about and (2) the discussion of LGBTQ+ in HCI and provide a dataset to facilitate future Queer HCI research.

Working in Extended Reality in the Wild: Worker and Bystander Experiences of XR Virtual Displays in Real-World Settings

Although access to sufficient screen space is crucial to knowledge work, workers often find themselves with limited access to display infrastructure in remote or public settings. While virtual displays can be used to extend the available screen space through extended reality (XR) head-worn displays (HWD), we must better understand the implications of working with them in public settings from both users’ and bystanders’ viewpoints. To this end, we conducted two user studies. We first explored the usage of a hybrid AR display across real-world settings and tasks. We focused on how users take advantage of virtual displays and what social and environmental factors impact their usage of the system. A second study investigated the differences between working with a laptop, an AR system, or a VR system in public. We focused on a single location and participants performed a predefined task to enable direct comparisons between the conditions while also gathering data from bystanders. The combined results suggest a positive acceptance of XR technology in public settings and show that virtual displays can be used to accompany existing devices. We highlighted some environmental and social factors. We saw that previous XR experience and personality can influence how people perceive the use of XR in public. In addition, we confirmed that using XR in public still makes users stand out and that bystanders are curious about the devices, yet have no clear understanding of how they can be used.
