This paper designs a personalized navigation service based on the student cognitive levels. The personalized navigation service takes the interpretive structural modeling to generate concept navigation matrix by using the student cognitive background matrix (retrieved from tests and questionnaire) and the concept relation matrix (retrieved from textbooks). According to the knowledge structure and the concept navigation matrix, the service can provide different students their own knowledge navigation maps. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper designs a learning notification express delivery service for providing students information about their learning status, their next learning activities, and even reminder notes. The learning notification express delivery service uses Petri-net for modeling learning activities. In order to make students knowing what status they are and what activities they need to do during the learning process, a learning planner is also developed to make teachers feel more comfortable in planning their teaching schedule. © 2006 IEEE.

Remote experimentation is the process of conducting real lab experiments without being physically in contact with lab devices. Recently, the development of Internet technologies fostered the spread of online laboratories, and significant benefits helped establish remote experimentation as a potential substitute to real experimentation. Internetworking lab experiments usually involve very expensive hardware;and providing remote access to this type of laboratories is highly desired, especially when a large number of students must share a limited set of devices. Very few remote internetworking laboratories have previously been implemented, and they had several drawbacks. In this paper, we discuss our design of a Remote Internetworking Laboratory which provided access to the internetworking lab at the American University of Beirut (AUB). The uniqueness of our approach is that it uses VLANs (Virtual LANs) to build network topologies, a technique that separates network subnets into different broadcast domains before allowing users to configure each lab device. The proposed scheme overcomes the limitations of other designs, and allows users to build any desired network topology and configure the lab devices in real-time. Many technical and educational features were integrated into the system, and possible enhancements were suggested based on several evaluation criteria. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

The research field of Intelligent Service Robots, which has become more and more popular over the last years, covers a wide range of applications from climbing machines for cleaning large storefronts to robotic assistance for disabled or elderly people. When developing service robot software, it is a challenging problem to design the robot architecture by carefully considering user needs and requirements, implement robot application components based on the architecture, and integrate these components in a systematic and comprehensive way for maintainability and reusability. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to communicate among development teams and with others when many engineers from different teams participate in developing the service robot. To solve these problems, we applied the COMET design method, which uses the industry-standard UML notation, to developing the software of an intelligent service robot for the elderly, called T-Rot, under development at Center for Intelligent Robotics (CIR). In this paper, we discuss our experiences with the project in which we successfully addressed these problems and developed the autonomous navigation system of the robot with the COMET/UML method. This paper discusses the challenges associated with privacy in health care in the electronic information age based on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Security Rules. We examine the storing and transmission of sensitive patient data in the modern health care system and discuss current security practices that health care providers institute to comply with HIPAA Security Rule regulations. Based on our research results, we address current outstanding issues that act as impediments to the successful implementation of security measures and conclude the discussion and offer possible avenues of future research. © Springer science+Business Media, Inc. 2006.

Despite many years of research in the area of human computer interaction, there are still remarkably few computing platforms in existence that permit remote collaboration over various software applications in an intense manner. Visualisation and interaction on a collaborative access table (ViCAT) is a new project whose aim is to allow intense collaboration between multiple users at multiple remotely located sites, as if the users were gathered around a physical table. This paper introduces the ViCAT design philosophy and how it addresses the mixed presence groupware concept, and then describes the relationship between the ViCAT project and current horizontal interactive human computer systems research.

Teachers always want to know how much their students had learned in classes. The most convenient way to discover learning status is `test'. Each item on a test sheet always contains one or more concepts used to check whether a student really understands or not. Teachers can also find a student's misconceptions out via the concept relations stored in a test sheet. In order to make the diagnosis process simple, teachers always take concept maps as their test development and learning diagnosis tools. This paper implements a SCORM/IMS compliance online test and diagnosis system base on concept maps. In the system, it has more than 5000 members and generates real-time learning report for misconception diagnosis over 500 times monthly. The members are the third-year student at junior high school and come from different counties and cities all over the country. Currently, the system covers 11 courses such as Chinese, English, Physics, History, and Earth science. It's obviously the system is useful for both teachers and students

The neural networks are successfully applied to many applications in different domains. However, due to the results made by the neural networks are difficult to explain the decision process of neural networks is supposed as a black box. The explanation of reasoning is important to some applications such like credit approval application and medical diagnosing software. Therefore, the rule extraction algorithm is becoming more and more important in explaining the extracted rules from the neural networks. In this paper, a decompositional algorithm is analyzed and designed to extract rules from neural networks. The algorithm is simple but efficient;can reduce the extracted rules but improve the efficiency of the algorithm at the same time. Moreover, the algorithm is compared to the other two algorithms, M-of-N and Garcez, by solving the MONK's problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The concept of intraepithelial neoplasm (IEN) as a near-obligate precursor of cancers has generated opportunities to examine drug or device intervention strategies that may reverse or retard the sometimes lengthy process of carcinogenesis. Chemopreventive agents with high therapeutic indices, well-monitored for efficacy and safety, are greatly needed, as is development of less invasive or minimally disruptive visualization and assessment methods to safely screen nominally healthy but at-risk patients, often for extended periods of time and at repeated intervals. Imaging devices, alone or in combination with anticancer drugs, may also provide novel interventions to treat or prevent precancer.
