The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer. The Collaborative Large-scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER Education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER Education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

This session relates directly to this year's conference theme Sparking Synergies: Bringing Research and Practice Together as it brings together researchers from different disciplines (information science and educational technology) to discuss current issues and trends related to Web usage across student populations. “Complex design problems require more knowledge than any single person possesses” (Arias, Eden, Fischer, Gorman, and Scharff, 2000, p. 84), thus each panelist will contribute highlights of his or her current research regarding the design, information, and pedagogical, needs of specific student populations (K-12 to higher education). After the panelists have presented their findings Diane Nahl will intertwine the threads of the panelists' conversations and, with the audience's assistance, begin to weave a fabric to uncover common usability issues.

The objective of this research is to evaluate the total quality of e-Leaming websites for university in Thailand by using quality criteria which based on IEEE 1061 and ISO/IEC 9126. In this research, we determine 6 quality aspects (include 2 new aspects) such as functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability and portability. In the research process, we categorize subjects into 5 groups. The result has found that the average of quality on e-Leaning websites in Thailand is 50.34% and this can be exploited as beneficial information for e-Leaming webmaster to motivate and improve the quality of e-Leaming website according to the proposed quality model for optimizing the effective e-Learning.

A user's profile, for the purpose of location management in a PCS network, is formalized as a subgraph of the network graph. This subgraph, the so-called individual profile graph (IPG), is determined after a period of observation with the intent of predicting and codifying the user's diurnal routine. The IPG is easily-motivated, robust, straightforwardly computed from observed data, and, under fairly intuitive assumptions, provably predictive of the user's diurnal routine. An IPG-based paging and update strategy is proposed and analyzed. © 2005 IEEE.

The problem considered is that of recognizing if a given convex polygon comes from a known collection by applying probes. Existing approaches use a number of probes that is linear in the number of sides of the polygon. The current premise is that probing is expensive, while computing is cheap. Accordingly, a method is proposed that recognizes a polygon from the collection, with high probability, using only a constant number of probes, at the cost of fairly large computing resources, particularly, in setting up and applying a range tree data structure. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Nowadays, Problem-Based Learning (PBL for short) is a popular teaching strategy for teachers. In the PBL environment students can learn how to solve the real life problems by discussing with their teammates and developing their brainstorm map. How a teacher decides what kinds of teaching materials are appropriate to students according to their learning performance is an important issue. Therefore, this paper proposes a sequencing mechanism to provide the teacher recommendatory sequence of remedial teaching for each group. In this paper the Rough Set theory is used to discover the hidden data pattern in the tree-like concept map which is transformed from the brainstorm map constructed by the students. © 2005 IEEE.

Designing component-based application that meets performance requirements remains a challenging problem, and usually requires a prototype to be constructed to benchmark performance. Building a custom benchmark suite is however costly and tedious. This demonstration illustrates an approach for generating customized component-based benchmark applications using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. All the platform related plumbing and basic performance testing routines are encapsulated in MDA generation "cartridges"along with default implementations of testing logic. We will show how to use a tailored version of the UML 2.0 Testing Profile to model a customized load testing client. The performance configuration (such as transaction mix and spiking simulations) can also be modeled using the UML model. Executing the generated deployable code will collect the performance testing data automatically. The tool implementation is based on a widely used open source MDA framework AndroMDA. We extended it by providing a cartridge for a performance testing tailored version of the UML 2.0 Testing Profile. Essentially, we use OO-based meta-modeling in designing and implementing a lightweight performance testing domain specific language with supporting infrastructure on top of the existing UML testing standard. © 2005 ACM.

One-on-one educational computing refers to I student I computing device, which means every student in a group uses a digital learning device. In this paper, we present a model of student question generation called AGQ, which stands for "asking a good question," supported by one-on-one educational computing in the classroom settings. AGQ is designed for engaging students in a challenging learning activity that potentially involves higher-level cognitive processing operations. We shall describe the general design of AGQ, called Product Evolution, and that the current version is a variation of it.

Integration of version and access control of XML documents has the benefit of regulating access to rapidly growing archives of XML documents. Versioned XML documents provide us with valuable informations on dependencies between document nodes, but at the same time presenting the risk of undesirable data disclosure. In this paper we introduce the notion of relevancy-based access control, which realizes protection of versioned XML documents by various types of relevancy, such as version dependencies, schema similarities and temporal proximity. We define a new path query language XVerPath over XML document versions, which can be utilized for specifying relevancy-based access control policies. We also introduce the notion of relevancy class, for collectively and compactly specifying relevancy-based policies. Copyright 2005 ACM.
