A modeling approach is introduced in this paper to capture the real characteristics of the WWW traffic, using a combination of Box-Jenkins models with seasonality removal. Fourier analysis and standardization are used to render seasonal data into non-seasonal data. However, seasonality cannot be completely removed by this approach, so both seasonal and non-seasonal models are employed and the best models are selected using posterior possibility criterion (PPC). In order to improve the forecasting accuracy, forecast values obtained by the developed models are adjusted by the difference percentage of the day of the week and by using this percentage adjusted values in place of the actual data, which are not available at the time of forecasting. With this adjustment, the developed models can provide very accurate forecast values, except for the case where the higher level of hierarchical proxy is shared by child proxies located in a different time zone. © 1999 IEEE.

Hierarchical WWW cache formation which provides both higher hit rates and saves overall bandwidth consumption through fetching WWW objects and periodically redistributing them among member caches is proposed as an application on a satellite Internet infrastructure. With regular prefetching and distribution of WWW objects, our system can utilize the satellite Internet with continuous streaming data transmissions for efficient WWW caching. Our system consists of a single hub cache and several rim caches. The hub cache is a core unit which is located at the satellite hub station and gathers WWW objects from the Internet, while the rim cache fetches requested WWW objects from the hub cache as well as receiving WWW objects pushed from the hub cache. The prefetching strategy of the rim cache is based on the statistical pattern analysis of user accesses. Traffic monitoring is used to manage both prefetching and object push operations. In order to reduce the consumption of bandwidth in the satellite Internet, multicast transmission of WWW objects is introduced. Furthermore, cached objects are checked regularly with an ''if update' tag so that their consistency can be maintained with reasonable overhead. We discuss our design and implementation of the AI3 CacheBone with our adaptive hierarchical WWW cache formation scheme. Through experiments, we show that the performance of our rim cache shows an improvement of approximately three fold when compared with ordinary hierarchical cache systems such as Squid. © 1999 IEEE.

Using envirodaemon to search the internet for environmental information and building custom search engines

The Internet holds vast stores of information pertaining to pollution prevention and environmental issues, and with each day more is added. Yet, as this storehouse grows, the difficulty of finding specific information increases. This article details how EnviroDaemon was built to ease the task of finding this information and knowledge base. It automatically builds and updates a catalog of objects at pre-selected Internet sites that are related to pollution prevention. Users search for information by submitting keywords. Searches can be restricted to small subsets of the indexed sites by choosing one of five search criteria, or the entire catalog can be searched. The results are returned rapidly and are embedded in several lines of text to provide context. If the text looks promising, the user can click on a hyperlink to access the full article. Since its release in March, EnviroDaemon has seen increasing use, especially following its demonstration at the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable Conference. The authors also discuss the process of building this search engine to show interested readers how to create other environmental custom search engines. © 1998 Wiley Periodicals, Inc., A Wiley Company.

To make spacecraft more self-reliant and less dependent on ground intervention, the authors have developed an executive (EXEC) for a new control architecture, Remote Agent. EXEC has an expanded vocabulary for commanding spacecraft, provides a wide range of capabilities at different levels of abstraction, and has a highly modular design.

Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

Two issues are addressed in this paper. Firstly, it investigates some important properties of bidirectional associative memories (BAM) and proposes an improved capacity estimate. Those properties are the encoding form of the input pattern pairs as well as their decoding, the orthogonality of the pattern pairs, the similarity of associated patterns, and the density of the pattern pairs. Secondly, it proposes an implementation approach to improve the storage capacity. The approach embraces three proposed methods, i.e., the bipolar-orthogonal augmentation, the set partition, and the combined method. Along with those methods is the construction of the set of bipolar orthogonal patterns.

Fuzzy conceptual graph programs are order-sorted fuzzy Iogic programs based on fuzzy conceptual graphs (FCGs). In this paper, we develop fuzzy unification and resolution proof procedure, taking into account fuzziness of FCGs and properties of fuzzy reasoning, for FCG programs. General issues of both CG and FCG unifications and resolution procedures are also analysed and solutions to them are proposed. The resolution procedure is proved to be sound with respect to the declarative semantics of FCG programs. © 1997, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. All rights reserved.

Recent applications of fuzzy control have created an urgent demand for fuzzy modeling techniques. Several methods for identification of fuzzy models from numerical input-output samples have been proposed. Among them, Sugeno and Yasukawa's method [6], which employs fuzzy c-means clustering, holds significant promises. This paper improves the method of Sugeno and Yasukawa. Identified fuzzy models are tuned at various stages by means of genetic algorithms, i.e., the numbers of input variables and rules are reduced and membership function parameters are adjusted. The technique, when applied to a nonlinear system, demonstrates its efficiency in a comparison with the original method of Sugeno and Yasukama.

Fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic are essential approaches to uncertain and vague information representation and reasoning. This paper is focused on uncertainty about types of objects and reasoning with it. A fuzzy type is formulated as a pair of a basic type and a truth-value, where a basic type can be crisp or vague (in the intuitive sense). A structure for a class of truth-value lattices is proposed for this construction. Then, fuzzy type lattices are developed with the fuzzy sub-type partial order satisfying intuition, and fuzzy type intersection and union operations. The result forms a basis for development of an order-sorted fuzzy logic system.

He is currently working on the development of satellite-based ATM transport and switching architectures for BISDN and Defense Information System Network amlications. Dr. Pond is a member of IEEE. Victor O. K. Li was born in Hong Kong in 1954. He received his SB SM and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge Massachusetts in 1977 1979 and 1981 respectively. Since February 1981 he has been with the University of Southern California (USC) LOS Angeles California where he is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. He has published 150 technical papers and has lectured and consulted extensively around the world. His research interests include high-speed communication networks personal communication networks intelligent networks distributed databases queueing theory graph theory and applied probability. Dr. Li is very active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) having been a member of the Computer Communications Technical Committee since 1983 and having served as Chairman from 1987–1989. In this, the second part of a two-part paper, the required time for establishing a mobile packet radio network using the virtual circuit and time division multiple access protocol developed in Part 1 is analysed. Tools are developed to determine the virtual circuit and network set-up times in terms of the channel bandwidth allocated to establish and maintain the network. The tools are then extended to include the effects of user mobility. Then these results are combined with the network capacity results of Part 1 to analyse the trade-off between the data rate and set-up time of the network. Next a hierarchical architecture is proposed and the network data rate versus set-up time trade-off of this architecture is analysed using these tools. This architecture is shown to both provide a higher data rate and establish faster than flat networks of the same number of nodes.
