InAs/InAs1-xSbx superlattice system differ distinctly from two well-studied superlattice systems GaAs/AlAs and InAs/GaSb, in terms of electronic band alignment, common-element at the interface, and phonon spectrum overlapping of the constituents. This fact leads to unique electronic and vibrational properties of the InAs/InAs1-xSbx system when compared to the other two systems. In this work, we report a polarized Raman study on the vibrational properties of the InAs/InAs1-xSbx SLs as well as selected InAs1-xSbx alloys, all grown on GaSb substrates by either MBE or MOCVD, from both growth surface and cleaved edge. In the SL, from the (001) backscattering geometry, an InAs-like LO mode is observed as the primary feature and its intensity is found to increase with increasing Sb composition;from the (110) cleaved edge backscattering geometry, an InAs-like TO mode is observed as the main feature in two cross-polarization configurations, but an additional InAs-like "forbidden" LO mode was observed in two parallel-polarization configurations. InAs1-xSbx alloys lattice-matched to the substrate (xSb ~ 0.09) grown by MBE were also found to exhibit the "forbidden" LO mode, implying the existence of some unexpected [001] modulation, but the strained xSb ~ 0.35 samples grown by MOCVD were found to behavior like a disordered alloy. The primary conclusions are (1) the InAs-like LO or TO mode could be either a confined or quasi-confined mode in the InAs layers of the SL or extended mode of the whole structure, depending on the Sb composition;(2) InAs/InAsSb and InAs/GaSb SLs exhibit significantly different behaviors in the cleaved edge geometry, but qualitatively similar in the (001) geometry;and (3) the appearance of the "forbidden" LO-like mode is a universal signature for SLs and bulk systems resulting from mixing of phonon modes due to structural modulation or symmetry reduction. The human metabolome has remained largely unknown, with most studies annotating ~10% of features. In nucleic acid sequencing, annotating transcripts by source has proven essential for understanding gene function. Here we generalize this concept to stool, plasma, urine and other human metabolomes, discovering that food-based annotations increase the interpreted fraction of molecular features 7-fold, providing a general framework for expanding the interpretability of human metabolomic "dark matter." © 2020, The Authors. The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is a community-driven standard for the organization of data and metadata from a growing range of neuroscience modalities. This paper is meant as a history of how the standard has developed and grown over time. We outline the principles behind the project, the mechanisms by which it has been extended, and some of the challenges being addressed as it evolves. We also discuss the lessons learned through the project, with the aim of enabling researchers in other domains to learn from the success of BIDS. © 2023, CC BY.

Test one to test many: A unified approach to quantum benchmarks

Quantum benchmarks are routinely used to validate the experimental demonstration of quantum information protocols. Many relevant protocols, however, involve an infinite set of input states, of which only a finite subset can be used to test the quality of the implementation. This is a problem, because the benchmark for the finitely many states used in the test can be higher than the original benchmark calculated for infinitely many states. This situation arises in the teleportation and storage of coherent states, for which the benchmark of 50% fidelity is commonly used in experiments, although finite sets of coherent states normally lead to higher benchmarks. Here we show that the average fidelity over all coherent states can be indirectly probed with a single setup, requiring only two-mode squeezing, a 50-50 beamsplitter, and homodyne detection. Our setup enables a rigorous experimental validation of quantum teleportation, storage, amplification, attenuation, and purification of noisy coherent states. More generally, we prove that every quantum benchmark can be tested by preparing a single entangled state and measuring a single observable. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

This paper presents a method to leverage mobile interaction design knowledge for low-literacy, moving from falsifiable hypotheses (claims) to actionable solutions (patterns). In prior work, claims and patterns have been used separately for different application areas and in different contexts. This research asserts that the transition from claims to patterns will enhance the design value, leveraging claims for uncertain situations and inexplicit user behavior and patterns for proven solutions for recurrent problems. This paper examines how these two structures can be combined in a claims-to-patterns approach to leverage mobile interaction design for low-literacy. To demonstrate this method, an example that highlights how claims evolve into patterns through research and design is discussed.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The dispatching of labor and distribution of tasks among workers are important aspects of corporate operations. Labor dispatch refers to the dispatching of employees to meet with clients; however, dispatches commonly vary with time. This means that any analysis pertaining to labor dispatch and work distribution should also vary with time. In this study, MATLAB was used to analyze data from anonymous caseworkers in central Taiwan in order to identify relationships between the location of their offices and the homes of their clients. Our aim was to determine the rationality behind labor dispatch and work distribution. This led us to develop a novel method by which to dispatch labor in order to achieve a more equitable distribution of work. Simulations demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme in improving labor dispatch and work distribution.
