Discourse analysis allows us to attain inferences of a text document that extend beyond the sentence-level. The current performance of discourse models is very low on texts outside of the training distribution's coverage, diminishing the practical utility of existing models. There is need for a measure that can inform us to what extent our model generalizes from the training to the test sample when these samples may be drawn from distinct distributions. While this can be estimated via distribution shift, we argue that this does not directly correlate with change in the observed error of a classifier (i.e. error-gap). Thus, we propose to use a statistic from the theoretical domain adaptation literature which can be directly tied to error-gap. We study the bias of this statistic as an estimator of error-gap both theoretically and through a large-scale empirical study of over 2400 experiments on 6 discourse datasets from domains including, but not limited to: news, biomedical texts, TED talks, Reddit posts, and fiction. Our results not only motivate our proposal and help us to understand its limitations, but also provide insight on the properties of discourse models and datasets which improve performance in domain adaptation. For instance, we find that non-news datasets are slightly easier to transfer to than news datasets when the training and test sets are very different. Bayesian networks have proven their value in solving complex diagnostic problems. The main bottleneck in applying Bayesian networks to diagnosis is model construction. In our earlier work, we proposed passive construction of diagnostic models based on observation of diagnosticians solving diagnostic cases. This idea has never been tested in practice. In this paper, we describe an experiment that tests an interactive prototype system called MARILYN on implementation of a system based on passive construction of diagnostic model, by inputting four hundred help desk cases collected at the University of Pittsburgh campus computing lab. We show that while the system's diagnostic accuracy continues to increase with the number of cases, it reaches very reasonable levels after merely tens of cases.

This paper investigates varying the decoder weight of the language model (LM) when translating different parts of a sentence. We determine the condition under which the LM weight should be adapted. We find that a better translation can be achieved by varying the LM weight when decoding the most problematic spot in a sentence, which we refer to as a difficult segment. Two adaptation strategies are proposed and compared through experiments. We find that adapting a different LM weight for every difficult segment resulted in the largest improvement in translation quality.

The study discusses approaches and an apply example of using geometric invariants in problems of control theory. An analytical review of modern papers in the field of trajectory tracking and path following control problems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been carried out. To increase the autonomy and ability to cope with uncertainties, it is proposed to use the theory of intelligent-geometric control. The problem of the trajectory tracking is considered in the framework of the pursuit-evasion differential game. Control invariants are considered in the form of ellipsoids, that can be used, for example, in pursuit-evasion problems. The task of determining the parameters of the pursuer’s motion to meet the evader on an ellipsoid is solved. The dependence of the pursuer’s speed on the parameters of the ellipse is shown. A modeling scheme is proposed aimed at joint application of optimal and intelligent control methods to solve trajectory tracking problem in difficult conditions. Simulations carried out in a disturbed environment on controlling the motion of a UAV group showed prospects of the proposed approach.

The problem of optimizing the load on an operator of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which performs real-time tasks of researching and monitoring territories in an unstable environment is considered. Working load depends on the intensity of the information exchange between onboard and ground control stations and is determined by the agreed limit that leads to a limitation in the number of managed vehicles. As a mathematical model of the multi-functional control system, we use a closed-loop queuing system, which allows to establish coordination among its major elements (onboard computing complex, ground control station and operator) and reduce the loss of service requests. The latter is one of the main requirements to functioning of the system during emergencies. Of considerable interest are optimization statements for the problems of distribution of functions between elements and choosing the load modes. We gave formulations of some optimization problems in a general form and made appropriate conclusions. It is assumed that as an applied task, the problem of monitoring fire sites in forest areas can be considered, which requires increased attention from the operator to process information coming to the ground control station.

We solve the planar case of the urgent pursuit-evasion problem for players using various strategies of motion. The following options are considered: players perform piecewise-linear motions; the pursuer moves in a straight line, and the evader moves in a circle; both players move along circular arcs. We propose schemes to solve the formulated problem based on the construction of Apollonius circles, which are geometric invariants. As participants of the game, we assume unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating in a non-deterministic environment. To solve the problem under uncertainty we use the theory of intelligent geometric control aimed at the joint application of complementary methods of precise geometric and flexible intelligent control as parts of one robotic system. Experimental studies of pursuit-evasion games are carried out in the MATLAB system using mathematical models of UAVs motion and wind loads.

In this study, we incorporate automatically obtained system/user performance features into machine learning experiments to detect student emotion in computer tutoring dialogs. Our results show a relative improvement of 2.7% on classification accuracy and 8.08% on Kappa over using standard lexical, prosodie, sequential, and identification features. This level of improvement is comparable to the performance improvement shown in previous studies by applying dialog acts or lexical/prosodic-/discourse- level contextual features.

A complete emotional expression typically contains a complex temporal course in a natural conversation. Related research on utterance-level, segment-level and multi-level processing lacks understanding of the underlying relation of emotional speech. In this work, a convolutional neural network (CNN) with audio word-based embedding is proposed for emotion modeling. In this study, vector quantization is first applied to convert the low level features of each speech frame into audio words using k-means algorithm. Word2vec is adopted to convert an input speech utterance into the corresponding audio word vector sequence. Finally, the audio word vector sequences of the training emotional speech data with emotion annotation are used to construct the CNN- based emotion model. The NCKU-ES database, containing seven emotion categories: happiness, boredom, anger, anxiety, sadness, surprise and disgust, was collected and five-fold cross validation was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed CNN-based method for speech emotion recognition. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieved an emotion recognition accuracy of 82.34%, improving by 8.7% compared to the Long Short Term Memory (LSTM)- based method, which faced the challenging issue of long input sequence. Comparing with raw features, the audio word-based embedding achieved an improvement of 3.4% for speech emotion recognition.

The paper gives a statement and considers the solution to an urgent problem of flying over the given targets by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in unstable conditions. A criterion is formulated for constructing efficient routes and passing arbitrary located sites according to a given formal description of the terrain map with the presence of interferences. Heuristic rules are proposed aimed at minimizing the graph of the initial map and reducing the number of alternative flight routes, given the time constraints for completing the task. The search of the solution in this case can be carried out according to the base tree of routes. A heuristic algorithm for searching efficient routes in a limited time is considered, which has the complexity that ensures its implementation on the UAV onboard computer. It is substantiated that the proposed approach can significantly reduce the number of comparing alternatives for flying around given arbitrary located targets in comparison with the well-known methods for solving this problem. The paper describes a successful example of solving the UAV route planning problem with the proposed approach, which is complicated by the presence of wind flows affecting the speed and trajectory.
