We describe a synthesis course that provides a hands-on treatment of many hardware and software topics learned in computerscience (CS) programs. Using a modular series of twelve projects, we walk the students through...

Purpose – The new economies of the twenty-first century require new approaches to learning and teaching from higher education (HE). Accordingly many universities have gradually scaled-up learner-centred approaches, including flexible delivery and technology-enhanced learning, from the domains of enthusiasts towards the institutional level. This paper seeks to argue that these new economies and styles of learning and teaching bring similar requirements for scaling of assessment practices in HE, in particular, that it is now time for many universities to consider change initiatives to scale-up the assessment of experiential learning to the institutional level. Design/methodology/approach – The need to scale-up assessment of experiential learning in the Australian and international higher HE contexts is discussed and a variety of change initiatives to scale-up assessment of experiential learning at the University of South Australia is described. These initiatives are explored in the wider context of change management in HE. Findings – Assessment of experiential learning is at a tipping point where it needs to transition from the enthusiasts towards the mainstream of academics. Support for this process is a new challenge for academic developers, educational technologists, librarians and other stakeholders, akin to other recent challenges such as mainstreaming flexible learning and technology-enhanced learning. It is argued that for change to succeed learners and academics require local or regional evidence that experiential learning and its assessment are both beneficial and manageable. Originality/value – Taking assessment of experiential learning to the institutional level is a challenge that is reminiscent of the need to scale-up flexible delivery and technology-enhanced learning over the past decade. Information that can help universities to graduate large numbers of knowledge workers with appropriate graduate attributes developed through experiential learning shoul

With the universal test machine and temperature test chamber, the effect of pressure and temperature on the behavior of 1-3 and 1-3-2 piezocomposites prepared with PZT/epoxy in our lab has been investigated through electrical impedance and dielectric analysis. The permittivity, resonant frequency and dielectric loss of the composites have been measured under vertical stress and temperature, and the variety of the material properties under pressure and temperature could also be obtained. The pressure and temperature stability of the composites have been assessed through experiments. The data of these two types of composites indicated that the stability of 1-342 composite with pressure was better than that of 1-3 composite, and two composites have almost the same dielectric stability with temperature. However, 1-3-2 composite showed slower frequency variation than 1-3 composite.

Relativistic oscillator strengths are computed for ns1/2−np1/2,3/2 transitions in silver and gold isoelectronic sequences employing configuration-interaction method with numerical Dirac-Fock wave functions generated with noninteger outermost core shell occupation number. This method is optimized to represent efficiently the core-valence electron correlation that is known to be important for transitions under consideration. The presented results are compared with our earlier data computed with core-valence correlation represented in the semiclassical core polarization picture within single configuration Dirac-Fock scheme as well as available experimental values.

Rotational excitations of compact Q-balls in the complex signum-Gordon model in 2+1 dimensions are investigated. We find that almost all such spinning Q-balls have the form of a ring of strictly finite width. In the limit of large angular momentum Mz, their energy is proportional to |Mz|1/5.

The separation of source coding into two stages, modeling and encoding, is a highly successful approach. We propose meta-modeling as an additional stage. As an application, we use this paradigm to deduce an efficient and optimal algorithm for a novel and powerful model set: the classification tree sources. Our results on classification tree sources unify and generalize prior results for tree sources. Moreover, we point out applications in text and image compression.

Testing is inherently incomplete;no test suite will ever be able to test all possible usage scenarios of a system. It is therefore vital to assess the implication of a system passing a test suite. This paper quantifies that implication by means of two distinct, but related, measures: the risk quantifies the confidence in a system after it passes a test suite, i.e., the number of faults still expected to be present (weighted by their severity);the actual coverage quantifies the extent to which faults have been shown absent, i.e., the fraction of possible faults that has been covered. We provide evaluation algorithms that calculate these metrics for a given test suite, as well as optimisation algorithms that yield the best test suite for a given optimisation criterion.
