Signal Transition Graphs (STGs) are a popular formalism for the specification of asynchronous circuits. A necessary condition for the implementability of an STG is the existence of a consistent and complete state encoding. For an important subclass of STGs, the marked graph STGs, we show that checking consistency is polynomial, but checking the existence of a complete state coding is co-NP-complete. In fact, co-NP-completeness already holds for acyclic and 1-bounded marked graph STGs and for live and 1-bounded marked graph STGs. We add some relevant results for free-choice, bounded, and general STGs.

We have designed and implemented game-themed programming assignment modules targeted specifically for adoption in existing introductory programming classes. These assignments are self-contained, so that faculty members with no background in graphics/gaming can selectively pick and choose a subset to combine with their own assignments in existing classes. This paper begins with a survey of previous results, followed by a description of the game-themed assignment modules. The paper then focuses on our efforts in assessing the assignments: including details of the procedures and instruments for evaluating student achievement of learning outcomes and attitudes towards the assignments, as well as the extra effort required of faculty to adopt the assignments in existing clases. Prototypemanufacturing as an educational tool has been very successful at thecollegelevel in architectureandengineering design. This paper discusses an innovative inquiry-based learning approach rather than the problem-based learning models commonly utilized by other similar programs. For example, several research-funded technology projects (e.g., Cappelleri et al. 2007) look at involving students in problem-based learning exercises (e.g., building robots);however, these exercises (while providing valuable experiences) have predetermined outcomes ingrained by the teachers, the project structure, and the components used to construct the devices. Therefore, inquisitive and creative problem solving is limited to the "kit-of-parts" in their approach to solving the problem. The inquiry-based CADCAMpedagogy model is more concerned with the process of solving a problem through the vehicle of prototyping than with the specificity of the design project itself. This approach has great potential. First, the need to solve the problem drives learning on multiple levels, integrating interdisciplinary ideas into the problem and solution. Second, the problem interlocks disciplines through inquiry knowledge building in team exercises. Finally, it encourages diversity and flexibility by allowing students to look at problems from multiples perspectives and points of view.

Performance evaluation is decisive when improving classifiers. Accuracy alone is insufficient because it cannot capture the myriad of contributing factors differentiating the performances of two different classifiers and approaches based on a multi-objective perspective are hindered by the growing of the Pareto optimal front as the number of classes increases. This paper proposes a new approach to deal with multi-class problems based on the accuracy (C) and minimum sensitivity (S) given by the lowest percentage of examples correctly predicted to belong to each class. From this perspective, we compare different fitness functions (accuracy, C , entropy, E , sensitivity, S , and area, A ) in an evolutionary scheme. We also present a two stage evolutionary algorithm with two sequential fitness functions, the entropy for the first step and the area for the second step. This methodology is applied to solve six benchmark classification problems. The two-stage approach obtains promising results and achieves a high classification rate level in the global dataset with an acceptable level of accuracy for each class.

Grid computing is an active field in high-availability computing. This paper focuses on the numerical calculation of two-dimensional frequency selective surface using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method on grid-enabled cluster. The result of experiment shows that the evaluation via the parallel FDTD is in good agreement with the result obtained via the traditional FDTD method. The parallel FDTD algorithm is correct and reasonable, which can be extended to other periodic structure and finite exciting sources.

This NSF-funded community-building (CB) project brings together Michigan State University (MSU), Lansing Community College (LCC), and the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce (CSW) to design and implement a process to create a collaboratively defined undergraduate computing education within the engineering and technology fields in alignment with the computational problem-solving abilities needed to transform mid-Michiganpsilas economy and workforce. In this WIP we outline the process we are developing to ensure that a wide variety of stakeholders - business, community leaders and post secondary educators - collaborate to identify workforce computational skills, define how these skills can be integrated across a curriculum, and develop revised curricula that integrate computational problem-solving across engineering departmental courses. By documenting, evaluating and making the process explicit, this process can serve as a model for national efforts to revitalize undergraduate computing education in engineering, and should be extensible to other computing education reform efforts.
