There are two major kinds of XML functional dependency (FD) definitions. The first kind of XML FD includes Tree-tuple-based XML FD (tFD) and Path-based XML FD (pFD), and the second kind of XML FD includes Extended-path-based XML FD (epFD), Sub-graph-based XML FD (gFD), and Generalized-tree-tuple-based XML FD (gtFD). The relationships and differences in semantic power between these functional dependencies are analyzed, and some results are obtained as follows: (1) tFD and pFD of the first kind of XML FD have the same expressive power of XML FD. (2) epFD, gFD, and gtFD of the second kind of XML FDs have the same expressive power of XML FD, too. (3) The second kind of XML FD can deal with set elements in XML FD and have more general expressive power than the first kind of XML FD.

Diversity and Progression among Students Starting Social Work Qualifying Programmes in England between 1995 and 1998: A Quantitative Study

She is a Demographer with a background in statistics and computer science. She is experienced in quantitative research techniques and applied statistics methods in demography and population studies. She is particularly interested in demographic factors affecting social care workforce as well as international variations in handling the global demographic changes. She also has experience in marriage and family dynamics and relationships between cultural diversity and social care needs. Jo Moriarty is a Research Fellow at the Social Care Workforce Research Unit. She has undertaken a series of studies looking at community care services with a particular interest in services for older people with dementia and their carers and people from minority ethnic groups. Jill Manthorpe is Co-Director of SCWRU with a background in university social work and health professional training at pre- and post-qualifying levels. She has undertaken a range of research studies in areas of community care adult protection professional training and risk. She has published widely with recent books on social policy inquiries abuse and students’ mental health. Her particular interests are in social gerontology and she has undertaken a range of research into older people’s services for voluntary groups local providers and national bodies. Peter Huxley is a qualified social worker with practice experience in child and adult mental health settings. He also has management and Board-level experience in adult mental health and social care services. He is Professor of Social Work Head of the Section of Social Work and Social Care and Deputy Head of Department in the Health Services Research Department at the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College and Director of SCWRU. He recently completed a national survey of the mental health social work workforce in England

There has been no large-scale study looking at the proportion of social work students in the UK who achieve the professional qualification, although there is some evidence that different groups experience different rates of progression. This article examines progression rates among students studying for the DipSW in England and analyses the factors that influence whether students achieve an award on time (defined as achieving an award without being referred, deferred, failing or withdrawing). The results show that male students, students from a black and minority ethnic group, and students with a self-reported disability have poorer progression rates. However, contrary to the picture in higher education as a whole, older students and students with previously lower levels of educational attainment do not have poorer progression rates. Social work education has important lessons to share with higher-education colleagues in terms of working with an increasingly diverse student group. However, work is needed to identify students at greater risk of non-progression than others and to develop more effective student support strategies.

This paper presents a new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) which adopts a radial basis function (RBF) approach in order to reduce the number of fitness function evaluations performed to reach the Pareto front. The specific method adopted is derived from a comparative study conducted among several RBFs. In all cases, the NSGA-II (which is an approach representative of the state-of-the-art in the area) is adopted as our search engine with which the RBFs are hybridized. The resulting algorithm can produce very reasonable approximations of the true Pareto front with a very low number of evaluations, but is not able to spread solutions in an appropriate manner. This led us to introduce a second stage to the algorithm in which it is hybridized with rough sets theory in order to improve the spread of solutions. Rough sets, in this case, act as a local search approach which is able to generate solutions in the neighborhood of the few nondominated solutions previously generated. We show that our proposed hybrid approach only requires 2,000 fitness function evaluations in order to solve test problems with up to 30 decision variables. This is a very low value when compared with today's standards reported in the specialized literature

Information fusion has been widely applied in many fields. Aggregate operator plays a key role in information fusion. So far, all existing aggregate operators are defined on a subset of a space (set). In many of the problems with information fusion, we often need to deal with the operator defined on a partition of the space. Motivated by minimizing the classification information entropy of a partition while generating decision tree using ID3 algorithm, in this paper, we propose a aggregate operator on a partition, investigate its properties and computation, and provide the conclusion that the sum of the weighted entropy of the union of several subsets is not less than the sum of the weighted entropy of a single subset. It is shown that selecting the entropy of a single attribute is better than selecting the entropy of the union of several attributes in generating rules by ID3 algorithm.

In this paper, we analyse web log data from user trials of the WHURLE-LS adaptive educational hypermedia (AEH) system from a behavioural perspective. This system allows users to switch from one presentational mode to another (visual, verbal or neutral), and this paper investigates users' choice of mode as they interacted with the system. We present the main findings of the browsing behaviours within the framework of rational choice theory, and discuss why and when switching might have occurred. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Image classification plays an important role in many tasks, which is still a challenging *** paper proposes a hybrid image classification method, which integrates wavelet transform, rough set approach, and artificial neural networks (ANNs).Wavelet transform is employed to decompose the original images into different frequency sub-bands, then a set of statistical features are extracted from the wavelet coefficients, the feature set can be viewed as an information *** wavelet transform well decorrelates images, there still exist dependencies between *** the features extracted from the coefficients may be *** the features from one sub-band are dependent on the features from another sub-band, the later one can be *** set approach is utilized to remove the correlated or redundant *** reduced information system finally fed into neural network for *** performance of the method is evaluated in terms of training accuracy and testing accuracy, the experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Coronary artery disease is one of the most frequent causes of premature deaths in Slovenia and also in most countries in the world. A ldquogold standardrdquo for treatment of left main coronary artery (LMCA) stenosis is still a surgical therapy; however percutanueous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is much simpler for the patients and gives comparable short-term and mid-term results to surgical therapy. PTCA of LMCA stenosis is safe and technically demanding but long-term clinical outcomes are not yet defined. In this paper we present an intelligent data analysis method for inducing a decision tree that was able to outline some anticipated and also some relatively unexpected but useful risk factors for survival after PTCA.

Vector graphics are an ideal content format for slide based lecture recordings. File sizes can be kept small and graphics can be displayed in superior quality. Information about text and slide objects is stored symbolically which allows texts to be searched and objects on slides to be used interactively e.g. for navigation purposes. The use of vector graphics for Web lectures is, however, not very common. A major reason for this is that multiple media formats have to be combined in order to replay video and slides. This paper presents experiences made during the development and every day use of two versions of the lecture recording system virtPresenter. The first of these versions is based on SVG while the second one is based on Adobe Flex2 (Flash 9) technology.

iPAM is a dual robotic system currently being developed in the UK under a NHS New and Emerging Applications of Technologies (NEAT) grant. The aim of the system is to provide assistive upper-limb therapeutic excercise for post-stroke rehabilitation. iPAM features two co-ordinated, pneumatically-actuated robotic arms which attach to the patient's forearm and upper-arm to provide assistance, mimicking the intervention of a physiotherapist. The system design and manufacture has been completed and the robot installed at a local hospital (St Mary's, Leeds PCT, UK) inside a community rehabilitation unit. The controller is currently developed and 'tuned' to provide gravity compensation for robots, removing any potentially damaging loads on the patient arm. The control scheme has been tested in simulation and using a mechanical arm model to ensure safe operation. Two small scale trials have been conducted to assess two facets of the robot design; firstly the mechanical design of the system to unimpede normal arm movement and secondly, its ability to provide varying levels of lift to the patient's arm to increase range of movement. The former of these trials compares free arm movement in healthy volunteers and Stroke patients with that when attached to iPAM. The robot was configured to compensate for its own weight, so the human upper-limb was unloaded. It was found that the robot had no significant affect on movement patterns. The second group of patient trials evaluated the operation of various levels of assistance against gravity. Patients were asked to point to a target with varying degrees of 'lift' applied to their upper and lower arm. In those patients with significant upper-limb impairment it was found that higher values of 'lift' improved the extent of reach but altered the movement pattern. Results from the trials demonstrated the suitability of certain modes of operation depending on the severity of patient disability.
