In 1928, the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) selected Jonathan Zenneck as the recipient of its Medal of Honor. He was cited for "his contribution to original researches in radio circuit performance and to the scientific and educational contributions to the literature of the pioneer radio art." His research interests included cathode-ray tube instruments, coupled resonant circuits, and directive antennas. He also performed experimental and theoretical investigations of electric wave propagation over land and water surfaces. He authored about 200 technical papers and two influential books on electric waves and wireless communication. He became a Fellow of the IRE in 1914.

We consider a system of agents as a layer between services and the network hosts. We present a self-organizing system of agents able to offer services with an increase of the speed, and decrease of the network traffic. A coordination model defines how the agents interact, and how their interactions can be controlled;this includes dynamic creation and destruction of agents, control of communication flows among agents, control of spatial distribution of agents, as well as synchronization of actions over time. Various distances and topological relations are used to explain our self-organizing mechanism. We analyze the stability of the system, and provide a new result regarding a weak form of stability depending only on the moment of the first requests of agents by hosts. Finally we provide a visualization of the services evolution using self-organizing maps, and presenting a service clustering structure.
We introduce asynchronous dynamic pushdown networks (ADPN), a new model for multithreaded programs in which pushdown systems communicate via shared memory. ADPN generalizes both CPS (concurrent pushdown systems) [QR05...

Clemson South Carolina in December 1994. Upon graduation he remained at Clemson University and received the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1997. During this time he also served as a research/teaching assistant. His research work focused on the design and implementation of various nonlinear control algorithms with emphasis on the induction motor and mechanical systems with friction present. He is currently working toward his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at Clemson University. Darren M. Dawson was born in 1962
in Macon Georgia. He received an Associate Degree in Mathematics from Macon Junior College in 1982 and a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1984. He then worked for Westinghouse as a control engineer from 1985 to 1987. In 1987 he returned to the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received the Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering in March 1990. During this time he also served as a research/teaching assistant. In July 1990 he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) at Clemson University where he currently holds the position of Professor. Under the CAM director's supervision he currently leads the Robotics and Manufacturing Automation Laboratory which is jointly operated by the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering departments. In this paper, we extend the observer/control strategies previously published in [25] to an n -link, serially connected, direct drive, rigid link, revolute robot operating in the presence of nonlinear friction effects modeled by the Lu-Gre model. In addition, we also present a new adaptive control technique for compensating for the nonlinear parameterizable Stribeck effects. Specifically, an adaptive observer/controller scheme is developed which contains a feedforward approximation of the Stribeck effects. This feedforward approximation is used in a composite controller/observer strategy which forces the average square integral of the position tracking error to an arbitrarily small value. Experimental results are included to illustrate the performance of the proposed controllers.

Complex software systems typically involve-features like time, concurrency and probability, where probabilistic computations play an increasing role. It is challenging to formalize languages comprising all these features. In this paper we integrate probability, time and concurrency in one single model, where the concurrency-feature is modelled using shared-variable based communication. The probability feature is represented by a probabilistic nondeterministic choice, probabilistic guarded choice and a probabilistic version of parallel composition. We formalize an operational semantics for such an integration. Based on this model we define a bisimulation relation, from which an observational equivalence between probabilistic programs is investigated and a collection of algebraic laws are explored. We also implement a prototype of the operational semantics to animate the execution of probabilistic programs.

This paper presents a new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) based on differential evolution and rough sets theory. The proposed approach adopts an external archive in order to retain the nondominated solutions found during the evolutionary process. Additionally, the approach also incorporates the concept of pae-dominance to get a good distribution of the solutions retained. The main idea of the approach is to use differential evolution (DE) as our main search engine, trying to translate its good convergence properties exhibited in single-objective optimization to the multiobjective case. Rough sets theory is adopted in a second stage of the search in order to improve the spread of the nondominated solutions that have been found so far. Our hybrid approach is validated using standard test functions and metrics commonly adopted in the specialized literature. Our results are compared with respect to the NSGA-II, which is a MOEA representative of the state-of-the-art in the area. Copyright 2006 ACM.
