In the automotive field, software development methods and tools are used to cope with the high complexity of automotive software development. However, problems occur with the tracing of information, the assessment and monitoring of the development status, late and thus expensive changes, etc, which lead to increasing development costs and time as well as quality deficits. Our experience with recent projects have shown that the key to solving these problems lies in providing proper answers to the following questions: (1) How can development methods be assembled? (2) How can the use of a variety of development methods be supported by an appropriate tool? To answer these questions, we introduce a tool integration approach that is strongly based on the integration of development methods. The contribution of this paper is (a) a method integration approach that considers fine-grained method objects and their specific structure in addition to the usually considered artifacts, (b) an approach to tool integration that overcomes the deficits of heterogeneous tool environments and utilizes the results of the methodical understanding. This paper presents a new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm which consists of a hybrid between a particle swarm optimization approach and some concepts from rough sets theory. The main idea of the approach is to combine the high convergence rate of the particle swarm optimization algorithm with a local search approach based on rough sets that is able to spread the nondominated solutions found, so that a good distribution along the Pareto front is achieved. Our proposed approach is able to converge in several test functions of 10 to 30 decision variables with only 4,000 fitness function evaluations. This is a very low number of evaluations if compared with today's standards in the specialized literature. Our proposed approach was validated using nine standard test functions commonly adopted in the specialized literature. Our results were compared with respect to a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm that is representative of the state-of-the-art in the area: the NSGA-II. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

We consider a system of agents as a layer between services and the network hosts. We present a self-organizing system of agents able to offer services with an increase of the speed, and decrease of the network traffic. A coordination model defines how the agents interact, and how their interactions can be controlled; this includes dynamic creation and destruction of agents, control of communication flows among agents, control of spatial distribution of agents, as well as synchronization of actions over time. Various distances and topological relations are used to explain our self-organizing mechanism. We analyze the stability of the system, and provide a new result regarding a weak form of stability depending only on the moment of the first requests of agents by hosts. Finally we provide a visualization of the services evolution using self-organizing maps, and presenting a service clustering structure.

The electromagnetic (EM) measurements obtained by using one transmitter and one receiver antenna in a borehole environment are simulated. The measurements are used to assess electrical properties of rock formations. First, logging instruments as well as rock formation properties are assumed to exhibit axial symmetry around the axis of a vertical borehole. The optimal mesh for axially symmetric problem is obtained by a 2D self-adaptive goal-oriented hp-Finite Element Method (FEM) that delivers exponential convergence rates in terms of the quantity of interest against the CPU time. The 3D mesh is obtained by full revolution of the generated 2D mesh. The computations are then performed for angles of formation layers deviated by 30, 45 and 60 degrees. The concurrent engineering infrastructure that solves the problem automatically in parallel is presented. The 3D code has been verified by comparison of numerical results with the known exact solution of the problem of antenna radiating into a homogenous space, and by comparison of results of 2D and 3D code for the problem with axially symmetric layers in formation. © 2006 The authors. UML structural models involve understanding the semantic relationships of a visual language - specifically the relationships among class and instance diagrams, as well as the abstractions in relating these diagrams to the problem/design being modeled. The project presented in this paper focuses on student learning exercises wherein the students had the ability to navigate and "replay" a portion of a complex model that visually highlights the semantic meaning of various model features. The exercise was interactive, non-scripted, and problem-based, and allowed students to explore the semantics of applied UML and reflect on 'mistakes' or extensions to the model. The significance of these findings indicate that non-scripted interactive learning exercises modeling complex visual semantics appears to have a positive impact with students least likely to succeed with the material. © 2006 IEEE.

Time series forecasting has been widely used to support decision making, in this context a highly accurate prediction is essential to ensure the quality of the decisions. Ensembles of machines currently receive a lot of attention;they combine predictions from different forecasting methods as a procedure to improve the accuracy. This paper explores Genetic Programming and Boosting technique to obtain an ensemble of regressors and proposes a new formula for the final hypothesis. This new formula is based on the correlation coefficient instead of the geometric median used by the boosting algorithm. To validate this method, experiments were performed, the mean squared error (MSE) has been used to compare the accuracy of the proposed method against the results obtained by GP, GP using a Boosting technique and the traditional statistical methodology (ARMA). The results show advantages in the use of the proposed approach. © 2006 IEEE.

Fast and selective simplification algorithm for VRML model

VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) is widely used in various areas. But most of the model simplification algorithms do not deal with the VRML specifics. The study presents an algorithm for performing effective and selective simplification on VRML model. The algorithm is based on iterative edge contracting. It exploits a new method to measure the cost of collapse which takes the length of contracting edge and the rotation of the normal vector to the related triangle into account. Furthermore, the algorithm makes full use of the internal structural information of the VRML file. It renders and simplifies every shape node of a VRML model individually. This enables the user to improve the quality of approximations by taking semantic and functional importance into consideration. In addition, the proposed algorithm adopts the Multiple-Choice approach to find the simplification sequence, which leads to a significant speedup with reduced memory overhead. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm on various VRML models is described.

Lecture recordings can be a powerful addition to traditional lectures and they can even serve as a main content source in a number of didactic scenarios. If users can quickly locate relevant passages in a recording, the recording combines the ease of search that comes with electronic text based media with the authenticity and wealth of information that is delivered in a live lecture. Locating relevant passages in a time based media such as a recorded lecture is, however, not as easy as searching an electronic text document. This paper advocates for interactive content overviews as an efficient navigation aid and presents an implementation that is based on SVG. It also discusses the feasibility of likewise approaches in other media formats

Signal transition graphs (STGs) are a popular formalism for the specification of asynchronous circuits. A necessary condition for the implementability of an STG is the existence of a consistent and complete state encoding. For an important subclass of STGs, the marked graph STGs, we show that checking consistency is polynomial, but checking the existence of a complete state coding is co-NP-complete. In fact, co-NP-completeness already holds for acyclic and 1-bounded marked graph STGs and for live and 1-bounded marked graph STGs. We add some relevant results for free-choice, bounded, and general STGs
