This paper briefly discusses the motivating factors that led to formation of an active collaborative group of engineering and education faculty at Virginia Tech. This group is actively pursuing a number of engineering education research activities and has been successful in winning two grants from the NSF in first 12 months of their collaborative efforts. These collaborative activities are targeted at improving engineering pedagogy at Virginia Tech and began with a planning grant from the NSF in September 2003. A 15-month Masters/Licensure program has been developed specifically for licensing engineering graduates in Technology Education. A number of assessment activities have been initiated for analyzing curricular changes beginning with the freshman-engineering program. Use of electronic portfolio in engineering instruction is being explored. The curricula of freshman engineering and bioprocess engineering are being reformulated using a theme based spiral curriculum approach, which is part of a major research grant, under the Department-level reform program of the NSF, that began in September '04. The interdisciplinary group has developed/ is working on a number of research proposals for expanding the scope of ongoing studies. The information presented should be very useful for new engineering educators who are exploring similar collaborative ventures elsewhere.

In this paper we introduce the use of recurrent least square support vector machine algorithm for the adaptive control of a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems. The curse of dimensionality is avoided by using the finite time window. Advantage of the newly designed algorithm is that the computation of inverse matrix is avoided. Simulation results also verify the effectiveness of the algorithm.

We will present in this article a survey of 3D visualization resources for Bioinformatics. A taxonomy is proposed based on some aspects in visualization evolution. Details of the taxonomy retained are presented with definitions to help understanding the differences between the five categories exposed. We have then listed a sub-set of bioinformatics tools, taking benefit of 3D visualization systems and classified according to the previously established taxonomy.

Audiometer systems provide enormous amounts of detailed TV watching data. Several relevant and interdependent factors may influence TV viewers' behavior. In this work we focus on the tune factor and derive temporal patterns of TV watching, based on panel data. Clustering base attributes are originated from 1440 binary minute-related attributes, capturing the TV watching status (watch/not watch). Since there are around 2500 panel viewers a data reduction procedure is first performed. K-means algorithm is used to obtain daily clusters of viewers. Weekly patterns are then derived which rely on daily patterns. The obtained solutions are tested for consistency and stability. In the process of research and development of speech recognize interface for Z+Z intelligence education platform, there are too many component interfaces and their usage is too difficult. A strategy for designing software, named re-integrating of architecture/component oriented general model of sub-domain, is proposed on the basis of domain-specific application system, in order to simplify architectures and system integration. Feasibility and design method are demonstrated, and a general component for recognizing voice-controlled command is designed. The DMDSS (Development Model of Domain-Specific Software) based on component/architecture is improved by Yajie and Junqiao, (2003). This idea of software design can be complemented of DMDSS.

The present work shows a methodology for detection of defects on mica, which is based on the reflectometry method. This prototype is made up of: a tracto transmitter and receiver (T-R), placed on an automatic mechanism to make a surface sweeping and in this way to acquire the data in a computer by an acquisition data card based on the microcontroller PIC 16F877. The data acquired is stored in a matrix form, to which a processing to make the conversion of an RGB image to a scale of grays is applied. Starting from this data a representation in three dimensions is done using topological metrics to do a third dimension reconstruction of the material ruggedness, with which the defects found on the ruggedness of the dielectric material and its characteristics of initial position, final position, may be observed.

Charge transport processes in disordered complex media are accompanied by anomalously slow relaxation for which usually a broad distribution of relaxation times is adopted. To account for those properties of the environment, a standard kinetic approach in description of the system is addressed either in the framework of continuous-time random walks (CTRWs) or fractional diffusion. In this paper the power of the CTRW approach is illustrated by use of the probabilistic formalism and limit theorems that allow one to rigorously predict the limiting distributions of the paths traversed by charges and to derive effective relaxation properties of the entire system of interest. In particular, the standard CTRW scenario is generalized to a new class of coupled memory CTRWs that effectivly can lead to the well known Havriliak-Negami response. Application of the method is discussed for nonexponential electron-transfer processes controlled by dynamics of the surrounding medium.
