Machine learning based academic performance prediction of students is showing great significance in ensuring the good quality of higher education. However, most methods only focus on predicting academic performance in a single aspect (such as only grade) or for students in a single Major. To address this issue, this paper designs an academic multi-task prediction network model called AMPNet for both grade prediction and graduation prediction of all majors in universities. It consists of three parts: the LSTM part, attention part, and feature fusion part. The LSTM part extracts the time series features of students' historical terms and predicts the grade points of the next term. Then these features are further refined by the terms and attributes attention part. Finally, the refined features are input into the feature fusion part, concatenating the input major delay-graduation embedding, and outputs the prediction results of both grade and graduation status. Comparative experiments show that the proposed AMPNet model provides good performance in grade point prediction, and it significantly outperforms mainstream machine learning prediction models in graduation prediction, and ablation experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of three key modules: major delay-graduation embedding, terms attention, and attributes attention.

The College of Engineering & Applied science at the University of Colorado Boulder proposes a low-cost, online, accredited Bachelor of science in Engineering (BSE) degree. The BSE will provide a pathway for community college (CC) students, or students with similar transfer credits, to complete a degree in engineering at a cost similar to attending CC. The educationally underserved communities across Colorado are often low-income, racially and ethnically diverse, and rural;the BSE's primary goal is to provide access to an engineering education for these students and, thus, open pathways to high-demand, high-wage careers. The BSE will reach an underserved population of learners who can stay in their local community while simultaneously pursuing an engineering education. A fully online, ABET-accredited engineering degree is surprisingly novel-only nine other online engineering degrees in the nation are accredited-but an R1-level university degree at a near-community-college cost is unprecedented. The BSE will invite the institution's best instructors to innovate in online education-virtual labs, team-based projects, flipped asynchronous discussions, and hybrid-learning activities. Student success support will include wrap-around advising to foster the development of the academic, affective, financial, and career support that students need to succeed in engineering. The BSE will utilize five administrative affordances: 1) success coaches to provide wrap-around support and guidance to students;2) course facilitators who provide personalized support;3) stackable credentials;4) eight-week semesters, allowing students to quickly complete portions of their education;and 5) mentorship programming to foster community and to help students develop their (inter)disciplinary identity. A year-long proof-of-concept research project explored the impact of utilizing pedagogical strategies from teaching English as a Second Language and Bilingual education to improve the outcomes of Hispanics in Advanced Placement computer science A (AP CSA) and AP computer science Principles (AP CSP). The project was conducted in the US during the 2019-2020 academic year with twenty-two AP computer science teachers. The intervention was evaluated by comparing the College Board's 2020 national and state AP CSA and AP CSP exam statistics with the aggregate scores of the students in the classroom of the project's teacher cohort. Teacher surveys were also used to evaluate the impact of the study on teacher's perception and teaching practices. Results from this research show that Hispanic students in the research cohort passed the AP CSP test at the same rate as all students passing the AP CSP test in the cohort. This contrasts favorably with the national and state Hispanic passing AP CSP test takers which are reported as 10 to 13% below all students AP CSP passing test takers. The pedagogical interventions used here are one approach to promote equity in computer science education. This paper presents a description of the project, a comparison of the project's data to the 2020 national and state AP CSA and AP CSP exam statistics, a summary of the teacher survey data and recommendations for continued research in this area. © 2021 ACM.

Despite the significant achievements in the development of automation technologies, the application of autonomous robots to improve the production efficiency of small-scale indus-tries has been largely ignored. While there has been excellent progress in industrial image processing systems implementation, most of the work has focused on a unique aspect of specific objects rather than introducing a general inspection system. Thus, this paper discusses the critical industrial topic of quality control, which develops rapidly through the use of autonomous systems. Given the high cost of implementing automated systems, this paper presents an affordable low-budget solution for the visual inspection system. This method of inspecting screw dimensions consists of four visual inspection parts and a special mechanical supporting structure. The designed system was able to check the overall screw dimensions, including screw head diameter, screw head driven type, screw length, screw thread length, and screw head thickness. It could also separate the qualified screws from the unqualified ones after the inspection process. The accuracy of most inspection cases is 100%, meaning the error ranges within 0.1mm, which meets all the non-negotiable requirements and most of the target requirements. The visual inspection parts can be further enhanced by building a template matching library that includes different angles of the screw head or by using Hough Transform to identify the defect types of the screw thread. © 2023 IEEE.

Very little research exists on the incorporation of co-curricular opportunities, specifically capture-the-flag (CTF) activities, and the impact on computer science students. However, some literature on underrepresented groups in the field of computer science indicates that co-curricular experiences, such as CTF activities, have a significant impact on efficacy and sense of belonging. This experience report seeks to identify and share teaching strategies that impact student learning, efficacy, and sense of self/belonging in the field of computer science, for all students. In an effort to design learning opportunities to help bridge the gap between the haves and have nots, and maximize learning for all students, this strategy uses CTF-based instruction as a way to generate and support culture-based, computer science experiences. The aim is to identify instructional strategies that build students' computing skills and improve their comfort participating in computing activities thus broadening participation in computing and cybersecurity. As students' comfort is related to their self-efficacy and sense of belonging, we explore the integration of co-curricular opportunities, specifically a capture-the-flag (CTF) approach to computer science instruction, as means of increasing student success, with regard to learning, efficacy, and sense of belonging/identity. This report involves a description of the class activities as well as data from a series of pre- and post- surveys of the student experience, attitudes, and gain in knowledge. Initial analysis indicates that low-stakes, entry-level exposure to computer science concepts has a positive effect on student comfort and skill acquisition in computing domains external to coursework. © 2021 ACM.

The computer organization and architecture is one of the basic compulsory courses for computer students. In addition, the curriculum ideological and political website is an important carrier of curriculum ideological and political, which is of great significance. This paper studies the ideological and political website of the computer Organization and Architecture based on frontend-backend separation written in Java under the framework of micro-services. First, we analyze the structure of the micro server and design a reasonable website with the micro server as the framework. Then we use the knowledge of software engineering to apply the thought and process of software design to the design and development of the course ideological and political website, and analyze the data process and structure design of the system. Finally, the developed website system is tested, and the results show that the system has good stability and compatibility. © 2021 IEEE.

Sign languages is a critical requirement that helps deaf people to express their needs, feelings and emotions using a variety of hand gestures throughout their daily life. This language had evolved in parallel with spoken languages, however, it do not resemble its counterparts in the same way. Moreover, it is as complex as any other spoken language, as each sign language embodies hundreds of signs, that differs from the next by slight changes in hand shape, position, motion direction, face and body parts contributing to each sign. Unfortunately, sign languages are not globally standardized, where the language differs between countries and has its own vocabulary and varies although they might look similar. Furthermore, publicly available datasets are limited in quality and most of the available translation services are expensive, due to the required skilled human personnel. This paper proposes a deep learning approach for sign language detection that is finely tailored for the Egyptian sign language (special case of the generic sign language). The model is built to harnesses the power of convolutional and recurrent networks by integrating them together to better recognize the sign language spatio-temporal data-feed. In addition, the paper proposes the first Egyptian sign language dataset for emotion words and pronouns. The experimental results demonstrated the proposed approach promising results on the introduced dataset using combined CNN with RNN models. © 2021 IEEE.

FairTP: A Prolonged Fairness Framework for Traffic Prediction

Traffic prediction is pivotal in intelligent transportation systems. Existing works mainly focus on improving the overall accuracy, overlooking a crucial problem of whether prediction results will lead to biased decisions by transportation authorities. In practice, the uneven deployment of traffic sensors in different urban areas produces imbalanced data, making the traffic prediction model fail in some areas and leading to unfair regional decision-making that eventually severely affects equity and quality of residents' life. Additionally, existing fairness machine learning models fail to preserve fair traffic prediction for a prolonged time. Although they can achieve fairness at certain time points, such static fairness will be broken as the traffic conditions change. To fill this research gap, we investigate prolonged fair traffic prediction, introduce two novel fairness definitions tailored to dynamic traffic scenarios, and propose a prolonged fairness traffic prediction framework, namely FairTP. We argue that fairness in traffic scenarios changes dynamically over time and across areas. Each traffic sensor or city area has state that alternates between "sacrifice" and "benefit" based on its prediction accuracy (high accuracy indicates "benefit" state). Prolonged fairness is achieved when the overall states of sensors similar within a given ***, we first define region-based static fairness and sensor-based dynamic fairness. Next, we designed a state identification module in FairTP to discriminate between states of "sacrifice" or "benefit" to enable prolonged fairness-aware traffic predictions. Lastly, a state-guided balanced sampling strategy is designed to select training examples to promote prediction fairness further, mitigating the performance disparities among regions with imbalanced traffic sensors. ESTIMATING THE FALSE DISCOVERY RISK OF (RANDOMIZED) CLINICAL TRIALS IN MEDICAL JOURNALS BASED ON PUBLISHED p-VALUES

The influential claim that most published results are false raised concerns about the trustworthiness and integrity of science. Since then, there have been numerous attempts to examine the rate of false-positive results that have failed to settle this question empirically. Here we propose a new way to estimate the false positive risk and apply the method to the results of (randomized) clinical trials in top medical journals. Contrary to claims that most published results are false, we find that the traditional significance criterion of α = .05 produces a false positive risk of 13%. Adjusting α to .01 lowers the false positive risk to less than 5%. However, our method does provide clear evidence of publication bias that leads to inflated effect size estimates. These results provide a solid empirical foundation for evaluations of the trustworthiness of medical research. © 2023, CC BY.
