Unacceptable amounts of computation can be generated in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with minimum mean squared error (MMSE) detection at the received side. A weighted Gauss-Seidel iterative algorithm with fast convergence is launched. The proposed algorithm uses a mixture of Conjugate Gradient and Jacobi iterations to select the optimal search direction. Then weighting factor is used to accelerate the traditional Gauss-Seidel iterative algorithm. The results show that the detection capability of the scheme has been improved. The theoretical analysis verifies that the proposed algorithm has a lower computational complexity compared to the MMSE algorithm. After simulation analysis, the recommended algorithm can gain better convergence speed and BER function with fewer iterations. If user antennas setting values is similar to base station antennas, the proposed algorithm is significantly better.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been used in a multitude of real-world applications given their predictive capabilities, and algorithms based on gradient descent, such as Backpropagation (BP) and variants, are usually considered for their optimisation. However, these algorithms have been shown to get stuck at local optima, and they require a cautious design of the architecture of the model. This paper proposes a novel memetic training method for simultaneously learning the ANNs structure and weights based on the Coral Reef Optimisation algorithms (CROs), a global-search metaheuristic based on corals’ biology and coral reef formation. Three versions based on the original CRO combined with a Local Search procedure are developed: (1) the basic one, called Memetic CRO; (2) a statistically guided version called Memetic SCRO (M-SCRO) that adjusts the algorithm parameters based on the population fitness; (3) and, finally, an improved Dynamic Statistically-driven version called Memetic Dynamic SCRO (M-DSCRO). M-DSCRO is designed with the idea of improving the M-SCRO version in the evolutionary process, evaluating whether the fitness distribution of the population of ANNs is normal to automatically decide the statistic to be used for assigning the algorithm parameters. Furthermore, all algorithms are adapted to the design of ANNs by means of the most suitable operators. The performance of the different algorithms is evaluated with 40 classification datasets, showing that the proposed M-DSCRO algorithm outperforms the other two versions on most of the datasets. In the final analysis, M-DSCRO is compared against four state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its superior efficacy in terms of overall accuracy and minority class performance.

Recognizing people's emotions accurately can help to improve people's feeling of happiness by adjusting their emotion immediately, which makes emotion recognition an active research topic recently. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals, which are electrical response of the human brain scalp, reflecting people's emotions and psychological activities, can be applied as an important tool for the emotion recognition. This paper focuses on the emotion recognition based on EEG signals during music listening. To this end, we first propose an emotion recognition scheme by combining the one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) and the stacked long short term memory (Stacked-LSTM), where the 1D-CNN is exploited to extract spatial features from EEG signals automatically and the Stacked-LSTM is applied for further temporal features extraction. We then conducted lots of experiments to validate the efficiency of our proposed scheme regarding the accuracy of emotion recognition. Finally, a comparison between our proposed scheme and other commonly methods used for emotion recognition based EEG signals (e.g., EEGNet, 1D-CNN, LSTM and SVM). The experimental results showed that our proposed scheme is feasible and outperform other commonly used methods in terms of classification accuracy. © 2022 IEEE.

The present paper proposes a vision for ownership of micro-credentialed learning within the context of Web 3.0. We discuss the current state of micro-credentialed learning with respect to validation, trust, and aggregation of knowledge badges. We address the problems involving centralization and high variability in badges between credentialing sources. We then propose a possible solution using decentralized identifier (DID) and verifiable credential (VC) technology to address the gaps with respect to ownership of learning.

In causal inference, encouragement designs (EDs) are widely used to analyze causal effects, when randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are impractical or compliance to treatment cannot be perfectly enforced. Unlike RCTs, which directly allocate treatments, EDs randomly assign encouragement policies that positively motivate individuals to engage in a specific treatment. These random encouragements act as instrumental variables (IVs), facilitating the identification of causal effects through leveraging exogenous perturbations in discrete treatment scenarios. However, real-world applications of encouragement designs often face challenges such as incomplete randomization, limited experimental data, and significantly fewer encouragements compared to treatments, hindering precise causal effect estimation. To address this, this paper introduces novel theories and algorithms for identifying the Conditional Average Treatment Effect (CATE) using variations in encouragement. Further, by leveraging both observational and encouragement data, we propose a generalized IV estimator, named Encouragement-based Counterfactual Regression (EnCounteR), to effectively estimate the causal effects. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of EnCounteR over existing methods. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Many students find anatomy concepts overwhelming and difficult to grasp, therefore, understanding how anatomy is learned, and the influences thereon is important to ensure academic performance. To evaluate student diversity and anatomy learning, this study presents a pilot study on how first-year students at the University of the Western Cape (South Africa) learn anatomy. A mixed-methods approach was implemented using a Google Form questionnaire. Data was obtained from 20 first-year anatomy undergraduate students in 2022. The findings revealed participants preferred face-to-face practicals (60%) and specimens (55%). Face-to-face practicals, teaching slides and 3D models were identified as effective learning measures, with 3D models showing significant differences across academic degrees. Students perceived greater benefits from face-to-face practicals, 3D models and specimens. Students strongly preferred the visual modality and spaced practice strategy. Differences in aural and writing modalities were observed across degrees, where BSc in Medical Bioscience and BSc in Sports and Exercise science had higher scores, respectively. Learning barriers included content overload, loadshedding, and less student-lecturer interaction. Overall, face-to-face teaching with teaching slides remains important, with online methods playing a supplementary role. Further research on anatomy learning in different degrees and the impact thereof on academic performance is needed. © 2024 Proceedings of the International Conference on Education Research, ICER 2024. Enhancing Long-range Dependency with State Space Model and Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks for Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis

Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) evaluates sentiments toward specific aspects of entities within the text. However, attention mechanisms and neural network models struggle with syntactic constraints. The quadratic complexity of attention mechanisms also limits their adoption for capturing long-range dependencies between aspect and opinion words in ABSA. This complexity can lead to the misinterpretation of irrelevant contextual words, restricting their effectiveness to short-range dependencies. To address the above problem, we present a novel approach to enhance long-range dependencies between aspect and opinion words in ABSA (MambaForGCN). This approach incorporates syntax-based Graph Convolutional Network (SynGCN) and MambaFormer (Mamba-Transformer) modules to encode input with dependency relations and semantic information. The Multihead Attention (MHA) and Selective State Space model (Mamba) blocks in the MambaFormer module serve as channels to enhance the model with short and long-range dependencies between aspect and opinion words. We also introduce the Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs) gated fusion, an adaptive feature representation system that integrates SynGCN and MambaFormer and captures non-linear, complex dependencies. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate MambaForGCN’s effectiveness, outperforming state-of-the-art (SOTA) baseline models. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In addressing the challenge of Crystal Structure Prediction (CSP), symmetry-aware deep learning models, particularly diffusion models, have been extensively studied, which treat CSP as a conditional generation task. However, ensuring permutation, rotation, and periodic translation equivariance during diffusion process remains incompletely addressed. In this work, we propose EquiCSP, a novel equivariant diffusion-based generative model. We not only address the overlooked issue of lattice permutation equivariance in existing models, but also develop a unique noising algorithm that rigorously maintains periodic translation equivariance throughout both training and inference processes. Our experiments indicate that EquiCSP significantly surpasses existing models in terms of generating accurate structures and demonstrates faster convergence during the training process. Telehealth has long been highlighted as a way to solve issues of efficiency and effectiveness in healthcare and to improve patients’ care and has become fundamental to address patients’ needs during the COVID-19 pandemic;however previous studies have shown mixed results in the user acceptance of such technologies. Whilst many previous studies have focussed on clinical application of telehealth, we focus on the adoption of telehealth for virtual assessments visits aimed to evaluate the suitability of a property where a patient is discharged, and eventual adaptations needed. We present a study of stakeholders’ attitudes towards such virtual assessment visits. The study has been carried out with healthcare professionals and patients and allowed us to identify user attitudes, barriers and facilitators for the success of virtual assessment visits from the point of view of healthcare professionals and patients. Finally, we discuss implications for designers of telehealth services and guidelines that can be derived from our study. © 2022 The Author(s). Photo composition is one of the most basic skills in photography and image processing. Different composition methods often lead to different perceptual effects. Different application scenarios need different composition methods. For the scenes that need to extract main information such as website blog, good composition method is to select the most important information in the image, and for photography and other application scenes, good composition method is to keep the aesthetic feeling of the image and enhance the expressive power. In view of the need to keep the main body in composition and reduce the background area, this paper proposes an automatic composition algorithm based on lightweight salient object detection model and minimum information loss. The test is carried out on the CUHK composition data set and the Flick cropping composition data set. The IOU, model size and model running time are used as quantitative evaluation indexes, Compared with the mainstream aesthetic composition model, the experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve the same performance as the mainstream aesthetic based composition model, while the operation time is only one tenth of the aesthetic model, the model volume is only one percent of the aesthetic model, and the composition results are more stable, which is very suitable for the mobile terminal real-time automatic composition algorithm. © 2021 IEEE.
