Synthetic data generation is one approach for sharing individual-level data. However, to meet legislative requirements, it is necessary to demonstrate that the individuals’ privacy is adequately protected. There is no consolidated standard for measuring privacy in synthetic data. Through an expert panel and consensus process, we developed a framework for evaluating privacy in synthetic data. Our findings indicate that current similarity metrics fail to measure identity disclosure, and their use is discouraged. For differentially private synthetic data, a privacy budget other than close to zero was not considered interpretable. There was consensus on the importance of membership and attribute disclosure, both of which involve inferring personal information about an individual without necessarily revealing their identity. The resultant framework provides precise recommendations for metrics that address these types of disclosures effectively. Our findings further present specific opportunities for future research that can help with widespread adoption of synthetic data. © 2025, CC BY.

Street lighting is a public facility that gives highway users’ convenience during their nighttime trips, making it essential to be controlled and monitored using IoT technology. This study aimed to develop a smart lighting system connected through a Mesh network. The system monitors the street light and automatically controls it using the ESP8266 module, a microcontroller with Wi-Fi built-in. The options in selecting the lamp type include Halogen, Fluorescent, LED, or Incandescent. In general, LED is used because it has an advantage in energy-saving over other lamp types. Moreover, the system is equipped with automatic light intensity control through a dimming technique by Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), while BH1750 is used as a light sensor. Furthermore, it monitors the environmental temperature and humidity using DHT22. The communication between the lighting module is based on ESP-Mesh because each node is connected and forwarding data to the destination and the coverage area. ESP-Mesh allows the wireless network to have a scalable architecture in a broader area. It has features to self-organize and self-configure, implying the network could be built and maintained autonomously. Additionally, the system has a web server service with access to control each node and find out the mesh routing table. The results showed that each node could be configured as a mesh network using ESP8266, which sends dimming commands and reads the sensors. The dimming and intensity control was tested using real public street light called NL200D LED module and an off-the-self dimming control driver module, N-Channel MOSFET FQP30N06L. Furthermore, a Mesh connection was tested using five super bright 3mm LEDs representing real street light due to the limitation of the LED module in the laboratory. Attack-Defence Trees (ADTrees) are a well-suited formalism to assess possible attacks to systems and the efficiency of counter-measures. This paper extends the available ADTree constructs with reactive patterns that cover further security scenarios, and equips all constructs with attributes such as time and cost to allow for quantitative analyses. We model ADTrees as (an extension of) Asynchronous Multi-Agents Systems: EAMAS. The ADTree–EAMAS transformation allows us to quantify the impact of different agents configurations on metrics such as attack time. Using EAMAS also permits parametric verification: we derive constraints for property satisfaction, e.g. the maximum time a defence can take to block an attack. Our approach is exercised on several case studies using the Uppaal and IMITATOR tools. The novel series of 3-actyl phenylthiazolidine-4-carboxyamide derivatives were prepared and described for their possible applications against prostate cancer cells. These amide thiazolidines include many substituents on a phenyl ring such as 3-NO2, 4-COCH3, 3,4,5-tri-OCH3, 3,4-di-OCH3, benzoyl and diphenyl. The structures of these amide thiazolidines were characterized by FTIR, 1H, 13C-NMR, and mass spectroscopy. Biological activity assays, applying the MTT assay for PC3 cells were shown to evaluate the bio-activity of these amide thiazolidines. The amide thiazolidines revealed promising cytotoxic, exactly, amide thiazolidines TAM1 (IC50 = 75.95 µg/ml) and TAM2 (IC50 = 79.82 µg/ml) displayed notable strength against PC3 cells. The molecular docking against DNA Gyrase, two types of protein (1SJO and 4HJO) and enzymes exposed strong binding interactions of an examined molecule inside their active sites, creating them valuable applicants for further development as therapeutic agents against human prostate cancer cell line (PC3). Strong total first hyperpolarizability βtot up to 2766.67 a.u. has been achieved for the TAM1. A direct correlation was achieved between the total hyperpolarizability βtot and the energy gap Eg and between the βHRS and β//. This study will provide more insights into exploring novel thiazolidines revealed promising cytotoxic, and nonlinear optical thiazolidines and progressing in technologies that rely on manipulating and controlling light for various purposes, such as optical signal processing, and photonics and photorefractive devices. © 2025, The Authors. Fake news or fabricated news, refers to false information published under the guise of being authentic news, often to influence political views. Fabricated news articles are a threat to people's trust in the government and in effect, one of the biggest threats that modern-day democracies are facing. As the menace of fake news is growing with each passing day, so is the research community getting more actively involved in curbing this issue. This paper reviews the current progress of the advancements done to solve the issue. The paper also presents various ensemble techniques to perform the binary classification of news articles. Additionally, the paper focuses on sources of articles to widen misclassification tolerance and make more accurate predictions. Evaluation metrics such as accuracy score, precision, recall, f-1 score have been used to make comparison among various models. The best performing model has been an ensemble of Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, Bagging Classifier used with a hard-voting ensemble technique, which gives the accuracy of over 88%.

Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are known for their efficiency in solving combinatorial optimization problems, thanks to their ability to explore diverse solution spaces, handle various representations, exploit parallelism, preserve good solutions, adapt to changing dynamics, handle combinatorial diversity, and provide heuristic search. However, limitations such as premature convergence, lack of problem-specific knowledge, and randomness of crossover and mutation operators make GAs generally inefficient in finding an optimal solution. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a new metaheuristic algorithm called the Genetic Engineering Algorithm (GEA) that draws inspiration from genetic engineering concepts. GEA redesigns the traditional GA while incorporating new search methods to isolate, purify, insert, and express new genes based on existing ones, leading to the emergence of desired traits and the production of specific chromosomes based on the selected genes. Comparative evaluations against state-of-the-art algorithms on benchmark instances demonstrate the superior performance of GEA, showcasing its potential as an innovative and efficient solution for combinatorial optimization problems. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

SARS-CoV-2 is the infectious agent responsible for the coronavirus disease since 2019, which is the viral pneumonia pandemic worldwide. The structural knowledge on SARS-CoV-2 is rather limited. These limitations are also applicable to one of the most attractive drug targets of SARS-CoV-2 proteins – namely, main protease M^pro, also known as 3C-like protease (3CL^pro). This protein is crucial for the processing of the viral polyproteins and plays crucial roles in interfering viral replication and transcription. In fact, although the crystal structure of this protein with an inhibitor was solved, M^pro conformational dynamics in aqueous solution is usually studied by molecular dynamics simulations without special sampling techniques. We conducted replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations on M^pro in water and report the dynamic structures of M^pro in an aqueous environment including root mean square fluctuations, secondary structure properties, radius of gyration, and end-to-end distances, chemical shift values, intrinsic disorder characteristics of M^pro and its active sites with a set of computational tools. The active sites we found coincide with the currently known sites and include a new interface for interaction with a protein partner. © 2022 The Authors

The well-known Dark Channel Prior (DCP) dehazing algorithm does not work well in the sky area, thus, we propose an image dehazing method for segmented sky regions based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). First, we apply PSO to the Otsu segmentation method to accurately segment sky and non-sky regions in the hazy image. Second, the transmission of non-sky regions is derived by DCP. A transmission compensation method is proposed to obtain the transmission for the sky regions. The transmission is then refined by gradient-domain guided filtering. Finally, the restored haze-free image is obtained through the Atmospheric Scattering Model (ASM). Quantitative and qualitative experiments show that the proposed method has a better dehazing effect, especially for hazy images with the sky areas.

Data-driven, structure-preserving approximations to entropy-based moment closures for kinetic equations

We present a data-driven approach to construct entropy-based closures for the moment system from kinetic equations. The proposed closure learns the entropy function by fitting the map between the moments and the entropy of the moment system, and thus does not depend on the space-time discretization of the moment system and specific problem configurations such as initial and boundary conditions. With convex and C2 approximations, this data-driven closure inherits several structural properties from entropy-based closures, such as entropy dissipation, hyperbolicity, and H-Theorem. We construct convex approximations to the Maxwell-Boltzmann entropy using convex splines and neural networks, test them on the plane source benchmark problem for linear transport in slab geometry, and compare the results to the standard, optimization-based MN closures. Numerical results indicate that these data-driven closures provide accurate solutions in much less computation time than the MN closures. © 2021, CC BY.

Eye-tracking can detect and examine human visual attention, emotional conditions, latent cognitive processes such as efforts to recall a concept or the fear of running out of time, and so on. Hence, we can use eye-tracking to identify deviant behavior patterns in learning and problem-solving. At present, given the existence of a global pandemic, online exams are widely used by educational institutions to evaluate students' performance. However, identifying cheating is challenging due to the absence of a human (invigilator) monitoring students' behavior as done in exams held in a physical location. In an online environment, students' behavior, and attempts to cheat, can only be captured via a computer, thus requiring a mechanism for online proctoring with capabilities for cheating detection. In this research paper, we present a browser based cheating detection approach in online examinations through eye gaze tracking. We developed a browser plugin to track the eye gaze movements through the in-built web camera. Using the plugin, we generate an eye gaze dataset while a student faces an online examination. We then process and analyze this dataset to detect any misbehavior during an online examination. The underlying research work of this paper identifies different eye gaze patterns during online examinations and present a cheating detection mechanism. For anomaly detection in the eye gaze data, we use a One-Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM). We then use these identified anomalies to predict cheating behaviors of the test takers. The given approach can be used for any web-based quiz examination such as academic institutions' exams, company recruitment exams, and overseas testing exams to detect any anomalous behaviors of the test takers during the examination period. The given eye tracking approach can also be applied to other research domains such as online gaming, and web usability studies to capture information related to user behaviors.
