Accurately predicting the future motions of traffic agents is essential for autonomous systems. Despite the significant success of existing motion forecasting methods based on supervised learning, they still exhibit two main limitations. First, when annotated data for a scene is limited, these methods often fail to achieve the expected accuracy. Second, they typically rely on complex architectures and extensive prior knowledge to improve performance. To overcome these challenges, we propose MF-BERT, a novel framework that adapts the concept of BERT to motion forecasting, inspired by advancements in the self-supervised pre-training paradigm. During pre-training, we design a siamese sequence modeling task with an asymmetric mask strategy to capture complex behavior patterns of agents. During fine-tuning, the pre-trained representation module initializes the feature encoder of the motion forecasting model, and a multimodal trajectory decoder generates all possible predictions. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of MF-BERT over state-of-the-art methods.

Robotic solutions for quick disaster response are essential to ensure minimal loss of life, especially when the search area is too dangerous or too vast for human rescuers. We model this problem as an asynchronous multi-agent active-search task where each robot aims to efficiently seek objects of interest (OOIs) in an unknown environment. This formulation addresses the requirement that search missions should focus on quick recovery of OO1s rather than full coverage of the search region. Previous approaches fail to accurately model sensing uncertainty, account for occlusions due to foliage or terrain, or consider the requirement for heterogeneous search teams and robustness to hardware and communication failures. We present the Generalized Uncertainty-aware Thompson Sampling (GUTS) algorithm, which addresses these issues and is suitable for deployment on heterogeneous multi-robot systems for active search in large unstructured environments. We show through simulation experiments that GUTS consistently outperforms existing methods such as parallelized Thompson Sampling and exhaustive search, recovering all OOIs in 80% of all runs. In contrast, existing approaches recover all OOIs in less than 40% of all runs. We conduct field tests using our multirobot system in an unstructured environment with a search area of ≈75,000 m 2 . Our system demonstrates robustness to various failure modes, achieving full recovery of OOIs (where feasible) in every field run, and significantly outperforming our baseline.

It is estimated that over 60% of people around the globe consume alcohol and cigars daily. Many people use them beyond the permitted limit, which causes lung cancer, liver and kidney failure. If there is a system that could monitor their intake level, it will alert them in case of excess consumption, which could help them control the intake. To help the users monitor their consumption, we introduce Cleo Eyeglasses in this paper. Cleo is a wearable spectacle device with a mounted camera and single onboard computer that performs custom trained object recognition to identify alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. Upon recognition, a log is automatically maintained in the corresponding mobile application. If the intake exceeds the user threshold, then our system generates an alert to both the user and concerned medical personnel. Cigarette/alcohol consumption can immediately affect the body without noticeable symptoms. Cleo addresses this with keen monitoring of vital body parameters and generates an alert when abnormalities are detected. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Despite an emerging interest in fluid manipulation within confined environment such as biological cells and micro-scale biomimics, remotely controllable micro-scale flow remains unexplored. However, intracellular microfluidics is not compatible with established top-down microfluidic methods because of limited accessibility. Here, we demonstrate photoresponsive DNA fluid, condensate of DNA nanostructures (DNA motifs), as a versatile mechanistic tool for the remote control of microflow. Insertion site of azobenzene, introduced for photocontrollability, determines an extent of dynamic shift in binding enthalpy between DNA motifs, providing the underpinning mechanism for drastic and facile flow-mode switching. © 2022 MicroTAS 2022 - 26th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life sciences. The growing demand for accurate control in varying and unknown environments has sparked a corresponding increase in the requirements for power supply components, including permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). To infer the unknown part of the system, machine learning techniques are widely employed, especially Gaussian process regression (GPR) due to its flexibility of continuous system modeling and its guaranteed performance. For practical implementation, distributed GPR is adopted to alleviate the high computational complexity. However, the study of distributed GPR from a control perspective remains an open problem. In this paper, a control-aware optimal aggregation strategy of distributed GPR for PMSMs is proposed based on the Lyapunov stability theory. This strategy exclusively leverages the posterior mean, thereby obviating the need for computationally intensive calculations associated with posterior variance in alternative approaches. Moreover, the straightforward calculation process of our proposed strategy lends itself to seamless implementation in high-frequency PMSM control. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated in the simulations. © 2023 IEEE.

Geometry calibration is a critical step for phase measuring deflectometry (PMD) system. Generally, a circle grid, a chessboard, or a group of fringes is used to determine the camera pose during the calibration. There are two main problems with using a circle grid or a checkerboard for geometry calibration: incomplete pattern capturing and uneven gray value distribution. For fringe patterns, the camera needs to take many images of the reflected patterns. This paper proposes a new geometry calibration method for PMD system, which combines square-based fiducial markers with a marker-less flat mirror. The proposed method can accomplish the calibration in the case the captured calibration patterns are incomplete and have uneven gray value distribution, and only require to take a minimum of three images. Experiment shows the proposed method can get accuracy calibration result simple and flexible. © 2022 IEEE.

Multispectral data fusion is a fundamental research in the fields of artificial intelligence and computer vision, which provides technical support and theoretical basis for remote sensing, autonomous driving, and medical imaging. In this paper, we present a robust registration algorithm to align RGB-D scans. In colored point clouds, limited by the principle of point cloud collection and generation, noise, and outliers are common and may cause registration failure. Therefore, the core of our method is to apply color information and kernel function to remove the influence of noise and outliers on the alignment accuracy. In the beginning, for the first time, we innovatively use the Cauchy kernel as the energy function of the point set registration to assign different weights to inliers, noise, and outliers to maximize their differentiation. Combined with the maximization optimization strategy, noise and outliers are removed to achieve robust registration. Secondly, since RGB-D data contain both shape and color information, the trimmed bidirectional color distance is applied to reduce the probability of noise and outliers being selected as the matching point pairs when establishing the correspondences. Moreover, the overall formulation is solved by the iterative optimization method. Experiments demonstrate that our algorithm is more robust and accurate than previous point set registration algorithms, especially when aligning point sets containing noise and outliers. © 2024 IEEE.

In post-disaster search and rescue (SAR) missions, it is crucial for robots to distinguish between actual victims and dummy objects, despite their similar characteristics. Edge video analytics have demonstrated exceptional performance in such missions, however, the trade-off between high-performing deep learning models and computational complexity often results in inadequate computational efficiency for SAR robotics. This study tackles this challenge by deploying a deep learning (DL) algorithm, i.e., MobileNet Single Shot Detector (SSD), specifically tailored for embedded systems, to perform object detection and classification tasks on lab-scale SAR robots. The proposed algorithm is developed in Python and implemented on a low-powered edge computing device. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in object localization is highlighted by its mAP score of 0.6247 and an average IoU of 0.9036. Experimental tests using a confusion matrix showed that the model accurately predicted 42 dummy objects and 43 victim dolls. The model achieved an overall accuracy of 89.47%, with a precision of 1.0, a recall of 0.8947, and an F1 Score of 0.9444. Real-time testing confirmed the model’s robust performance, maintaining high accuracy and a stable frame rate of 47 FPS. These findings corroborate the efficacy of the MobileNet SSD algorithm in reliably detecting and differentiating objects within embedded SAR robotic operations. © 2024 IEEE.

In a blockchain-based energy trading system, prosumers engage in energy trading and simultaneously participate in blockchain mining to process trading transactions. However, as blockchain mining consumes energy, prosumers may lack incentives to participate, resulting in a low blockchain throughput and negatively affecting the energy trading market. To address this issue, we propose a Two-Piece Linear Compensation (TPLC) mechanism to incentivize sufficient participation for blockchain mining. We model the mechanism design as a two-stage game, wherein the system designer proposes the mechanism in Stage I, and prosumers decide on their energy allocation strategies in Stage II. We analyze the complex and coupled interactions of prosumers and uncover the reason for the low throughput issue: a self-interested prosumer neglects the positive externality of energy allocation to the blockchain, as it does not benefit him. Despite the diverse objectives of prosumers and the large search space of the mechanism, we demonstrate that the distributed TPLC mechanism achieves the maximum social welfare of a centralized decision benchmark. The numerical analysis compares the TPLC mechanism with linear compensation and no compensation benchmarks. Our results show that the TPLC mechanism achieves the highest social welfare and average payoff for prosumers. Additionally, the TPLC mechanism supports a large energy market without sacrificing the user experience. © 2023 IEEE.

For a long time engineering design has relied on human engineers manually crafting and refining designs using their expertise and experience. In Bio-inspired Evolutionary Development (EvoDevo), generative algorithms are employed to investigate a broader design space that may go beyond what human engineers have considered. Previous literature has demonstrated the use of quality and diversity (QD) algorithms in evolutionary approaches to drive the process to better quality solutions. This paper provides a study to understand the effects of using QD algorithms in EvoDevo processes for engineering design. This paper also analyses the impact of using different behavioural characterisations (BC) in the performance of the quality of the solutions found. The results demonstrate that quality and diversity algorithms can find better solutions than other EAs for engineering design problems. It was also found that the characterisation of the BC is important to get the best results. © 2024 IEEE.
