In RFID systems, the grouping problem is to efficiently group all tags according to a given partition such that tags in the same group will have the same group ID. Unlike previous research on the unicast transmission from a reader to a tag, grouping provides a fundamental mechanism for efficient multicast transmissions and aggregate queries in large RFID-enabled applications. A message can be transmitted to a group of m tags simultaneously in multicast, which improves the efficiency by m times when comparing with unicast. We study fast grouping protocols in large RFID systems. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first attempt to tackle this practically important yet uninvestigated problem. We start with a straightforward solution called the Enhanced Polling Grouping (EPG) protocol. We then propose a time-efficient FIltering Grouping (FIG) protocol that uses Bloom filters to remove the costly ID transmissions. We point out the limitation of the Bloom-filter based solution due to its intrinsic false positive problem, which leads to our final ConCurrent Grouping (CCG) protocol. With a drastically different design, CCG is able to outperform FIG by exploiting collisions to inform multiple tags of their group ID simultaneously and by removing any wasteful slots in its frame-based execution. Simulation results demonstrate that our best protocol CCG can reduce the execution time by a factor of 11 when comparing with a baseline polling protocol.

Today's industry emphasize greatly on data-driven and data engineering technologies, triggering a tremendous amount of structured and unstructured data across different domains. As a result of which, semantic information is implicitly available in the knowledge base, mainly in the form of data descriptions, and needs to be extracted automatically to better serve the users' need. But how to deliver the data to the end-users in an effective and efficient way, has posed a new challenge, particularly in the context of big data and mobile computing. Traditional search-based approach may suffer from the degraded user experience or scalability. It is very essential to understand meaning (i.e., semantics) rather than pure keywords matching, that might lead to entirely spurious results of no relevance. In this paper, we present the usage of an Augmented Reality (AR) solution to bridge the existing semantic data and information with the real-world physical objects. The AR solution - HD4AR (Hybrid 4-Dimensional Augmented Reality) has been commercialized as a startup company to provide AR service to industry patterns to associate valuable semantic information with the objects in specific contexts, so that users can easily retrieve the data by snapping a photo and having the semantic information rendered on the photo accurately and quickly. Followed by a brief overview of the technology, we present a few use cases as well as the lessons learned from the industry collaboration experience.

The widely used RFID tags impose serious privacy concerns as a tag responds to queries from readers no matter they are authorized or not. The common solution is to use a commercially available blocker tag which behaves as if a set of tags with known blocking IDs are present. The use of blocker tags makes RFID estimation much more challenging as some genuine tag IDs are covered by the blocker tag and some are not. In this paper, we propose REB, the first RFID estimation scheme with the presence of blocker tags. REB uses the framed slotted Aloha protocol specified in the C1G2 standard. For each round of the Aloha protocol, REB first executes the protocol on the genuine tags and the blocker tag, and then virtually executes the protocol on the known blocking IDs using the same Aloha protocol parameters. The basic idea of REB is to conduct statistically inference from the two sets of responses and estimate the number of genuine tags. We conduct extensive simulations to evaluate the performance of REB, in terms of time-efficiency and estimation reliability. The experimental results reveal that our REB scheme runs tens of times faster than the fastest identification protocol with the same accuracy requirement.

Security is a major driver of computerized home automation systems today. With the development of network and automatic control technologies, a home security monitoring and alarm system has become more and more efficient and effective as technology advances. In this paper we have proposed a simple, low cost, low power method for implementing a wireless home security system, using the Zigbee (IEEE 802.15.4) standard. Our project architecture consists of sensor nodes deployed in various places throughout a structure, to provide security for that structure. The Zigbee modules act as end devices that monitor the sensors continuously and send the security status of each sensor to the coordinator node, which is connected to an Arduino Micro Controller Unit (MCU), which acts as the master brains of the system. Furthermore, the Arduino is also able to relay its security information to an Android App that we have developed to make remote system monitoring even easier for the user. In our project we have used the XBEE Pro series2 radios for RF communication, a PIR motion sensor, and a contact door sensor, an automated door lock, an Arduino MCU, and a specially designed Android App. The software has been implemented using the C programming language.

For the efficient performance of law enforcement, it is important that the officers have the upper hand when it comes to technology. Information is of the upmost importance in the Criminal Justice field, but it is also important to have data in a manner that can be easily accessible and does not interfere with the officer's activities. With the arrival of the Google Glass, it is possible to bring data closer to the officer in a convenient way. Taking advantage of the camera on the Glass, our software will use photographs taken by the officer in order to retrieve relevant data stored in a database. License information, registration, and facial identification are our main objectives for this project.

Sustainability has emerged as a broad concern for society. Many engineering disciplines have been grappling with challenges in how we sustain technical, social and ecological systems. In the software engineering community, for example, maintainability has been a concern for a long time. But too often, these issues are treated in isolation from one another. Misperceptions among practitioners and research communities persist, rooted in a lack of coherent understanding of sustainability, and how it relates to software systems research and practice. This article presents a cross-disciplinary initiative to create a common ground and a point of reference for the global community of research and practice in software and sustainability, to be used for effectively communicating key issues, goals, values and principles of sustainability design for software-intensive *** centrepiece of this effort is the Karlskrona Manifesto for Sustainability Design, a vehicle for a much needed conversation about sustainability within and beyond the software community, and an articulation of the fundamental principles underpinning design choices that affect sustainability. We describe the motivation for developing this manifesto, including some considerations of the genre of the manifesto as well as the dynamics of its creation. We illustrate the collaborative reflective writing process and present the current edition of the manifesto itself. We assess immediate implications and applications of the articulated principles, compare these to current practice, and suggest future steps.

The massive growth in the mobile phone and handheld device markets has created an impact on computer science education, especially in curricula for wireless networking, information security, and mobile application development. Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure is relatively new in many countries. Due to the recency of an EV infrastructure, it is important to carry out a series of testing programs. Furthermore, authenticity for collection of data is necessary for testing programs in order to provide accurate results. At the same time, user privacy should not cease since tracing one's daily logistic movements or behaviour from the EV testing programs means breaching one's privacy. In this paper, we propose a novel solution PEVTS for enabling both data authenticity and user privacy concurrently. Our proposed system provides great flexibility to the authority to choose any arbitrary set of authenticated users for testing in every time period. At the same time, it provides anonymity for all participating users. Yet it can trace any vehicle within a time period for statistical purpose. We give a detailed description of our system. We also implement the prototype of our system to show its practicality.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive haze removal method based on dark channel prior. The dark channel value is compensated for estimating the transmission;the atmospheric light will be re-estimated through the analysis of the characteristics of images. Images are usually degraded with haze due to the object absorption and atmospheric scattering. The experiments show that the images recovered by the proposed method are better than other existing methods and recovered images are closer to real images. Meanwhile, the Mean Square Error (MSE) is used to verify the proposed approach for the images recovered which are taken from the FRIDA database. Through the comparison of Inverse Discrete Cosine Transforms (IDCT) of haze images and haze-free images, the statistics of the comparison shows that the haze images consume more computation time. To improve the time complexity, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) was used to increase the computing efficiency. © 2015, ICIC International.
