Control within a First Person Shooter (FPS) traditionally involves one of two methods of input - primarily a gamepad or the combination of keyboard and mouse. Recent advances in hardware now allow users to engage with digital media through gesture alone, opening new possibilities for interaction techniques. In this paper, we present the results of a study on using single-hand gestures to control a FPS game, comparing the performance against traditional input methods. Fundamental tasks, including movement and aiming were investigated independently, and were later combined into a full control scheme. This work presents the results of a study of 26 participants, including summaries of in-game performance and a post-game survey. The motivation behind the study is not in evaluating these three input methods through direct comparison, but to establish a baseline of user capabilities for the nascent field of gesture-based game control.

The emergence of new hardware and software tools for game design and play provides an important opportunity to study how players interact and what new modes of play experiences achieve the highest overall player experience. This study examines an asymmetric game design - wherein players choose different roles in a one-against-many scenario. We empirically validate asymmetric game design through a formal usability study that measures how location (co-location vs. distributed location) and role selection influence overall player satisfaction. Results demonstrate that players enjoy asymmetric games and appreciate the ability to select their desired role without being constrained by other players' selection. Additionally, this study finds that real-world placement/location significantly influences play style. This study contributes to the field by defining the viability of this emerging game design pattern and points to novel opportunities for future research.

Mobile embedded system is an excellent candidate to provides depth, breadth, and rigorousness for meeting the emerging workforce and education needs in science, technology, and engineering. However, the high requirements of investment in resources and instructors make the mobile embedded system education impractical for universities and colleges that lack the resources and build-ups. This work-in-progress paper presents a novel low-cost and portable labware for hands-on labs and projects using Android smartphones and scalable sensory platform. It is easy-to-adopt, promotes students with authentic and creative learning, and supports wide dissemination.
