In this paper the authors show how software component design can affect security properties through different composition operators. The authors define software composition as the result of aggregating and/or associating a component to a software system. The component itself may be informational or functional and carry a certain level of security attribute. The authors first show that the security attributes or properties form a lattice structure when combined with the appropriate least upper bound and greatest lower bound type of operators. Three composition operators, named C l, C2 and C3 are developed. The system's security properties resulting from these compositions are then studied. The authors discuss how different composition operators maintain, relax and restrict the security properties. Finally, the authors show that C1 and C2 composition operators are order-sensitive and that C3 is order-insensitive.

This paper presents a new simple low-cost portable energy efficient device for teaching operating systems. This new technology offers a variety of curricular components including an open sourced small OS for proof of concepts and is suitable for project oriented curriculum, especially for online courses. This device has a potential to be reused in other computing courses. Its inexpensive characteristics promote broad adoption especially in resource limited institutions.

Fewstudies examine distinct characteristics of problems studied by agent-based models and their implications on operational validation. This paper focuses on exploratory and generative modeling perspective advocated by the agent-based modeling paradigm. The significance of robustness is emphasized, and a robust generative validation strategy is proposed for models used in scientific problems in which ambiguity and deep uncertainty pervade. The strategy is predicated on the premise of creative evolutionary systems perspective that enables viewing validation within the scientific method of falsification. That is, the strategy mimics the way scientific knowledge is constructed and validated by groups of scientists within a scientific discipline. The utility and feasibility of the method is demonstrated using a case study.

The CubeSat platform provides a unique challenge for flight software design due to the incredible size and power constraints. A number of tradeoffs must be made to balance effectiveness, fault tolerance, and cost. These basic requirements have been combined with the lessons learned from Cal Poly's past 8-bit avionics system to design a significant revision based around a 32-bit microprocessor running Linux. This work analyzes both generations of avionics design, including a discussion of major design principles that are relevant to other CubeSat missions.

Hardware accelerators such as FPGAs and GPUs in heterogeneous systems are being increasingly important for many applications. For high performance computing, the flexibility and efficiency of FPGA makes it an attractive alternative to other approaches. However, for applications that have to decompose large matrices, not many scalable solutions can be found on FPGAs. In this paper, we propose a scalable QR matrix decomposer on FPGAs based on the latest advances in tiled matrix decomposition algorithms for high performance linear algebra. The proposed design can decompose a matrix of size limited only by off-chip memory and has the potential to achieve high performance.
