The rapid growth of embedded systems results in a great demand of professionals for embedded software design and development. However, embedded system education is not well represented in the current computerscience (CS) academic programs. Existing embedded systems curricula heavily rely on a significant investment in lab resources and a high knowledge base requirement for instructors (e.g., faculty whose expertise is not specifically in this area). To overcome these difficulties, we have developed an online embedded system courseware with hands-on labs in an inexpensive and portable development box. The portable and modular design of this courseware provides a "ready-to-be-adopted" model and will save resources and time in broadening embedded system education. Copyright 2010 ACM.

The IT model curriculum represents an excellent starting point toward understanding more about IT as an academic discipline. The early 1990s saw the emergence of the Internet from the environs of the technical cognoscenti into the dot-com world with an interface for the masses. Additionally, the personal computer had reached the point that essentially everyone in all enterprises had one, and used it heavily. The increased complexity and importance of computing technologies for the success of organizations and individuals led to a growing need for professionals to select, create, apply, integrate, and administer an organizational IT infrastructure. Organizations typically filled these positions using individuals with widely varying backgrounds whose educational experiences often provided poor preparation for the demands of the position. The skill sets needed for the new breed of network and system administrators were not provided by the more algorithmically and analytically oriented computerscience programs of the time. Moreover, information systems programs, with the business education requirements of their accreditation bodies, were equally unwilling or unable to include the technical depth required. In response to this new educational need, programs arose such as those from Purdue university and Pennsylvania College of Technology, which were called Information Systems (IS) and computerscience (CS) respectively, but were something else entirely. These programs, and others like them, had sprung up independently and spontaneously to satisfy the needs of employers for workers with skills in networks, distributed systems, and beginning in the mid-1990s, the Web. By the peak of the dot-com boom in 2000, there were at least 17 institutions around the U.S. that had or were forming programs with similar characteristics, and which were most commonly called "Information Technology." The largest of them was at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, NY, with o

Green computing has become an important subject due to global warming caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions. While green computing is an active research area, it is still of infancy in computerscience (CS) education. In this regard, we propose to bring green computing into CS capstone curriculum. This integration culminates in a portable and affordable platform, a portable Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) in a Box (WinBox) with emerging ZigBee wireless technology. Both instructors and students benefit from this innovation. It allows an instructor to sponsor a realistic, significant, and feasible semester-long project. It provides students a challenge to integrate their learnt principles and theories to analyze, design, implement a productoriented project creatively. Students are well prepared for the professional workforce by gaining hands-on experience from developing a real-world product. Our publicly accessible "learning by doing" pedagogical model promotes lifelong learning. Copyright 2010 ACM.

We have developed an innovative online tool for teaching introductory programming courses with the goals of engaging students in learning to program and increasing students' learning confidence. This system provides an online runtime environment that supports Java online compilation, execution, and verification with either Java console, GUI, or Web-based programs. In addition, the system can also support a synchronous, in-class, and instructor-led setting with instant assessment as well as an asynchronous, off-class, self-paced, and independent-study supplemental environment. In standard introductory electric circuits laboratories for electrical engineering (EE) majors and non-EE majors, prototype boards are typically used to construct and test electric circuits. Students typically do not learn how to design and manufacture Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) that are commonly used in more sophisticated design projects and other engineering applications. This paper will present the development and assessment of a PCB layout and manufacturing laboratory module that has been used in introductory electric circuits laboratories for EE and non-EE majors. The feasibility of integrating the new PCB layout and manufacturing module into the electric circuit course will be discussed. An experiment has been designed and conducted to assess the impact of the PCB module. A survey with questions from the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) supplemented with additional questions was used to measure students' motivation and the impact of the PCB module on student learning. In Winter quarter of 2009 at Cal Poly, two lab sessions for sophomore and junior non-EE engineering majors were taught by an instructor with an experimental group that designed a real PCB for one of their circuit design experiments and a control group that implemented all of the experiments using prototype boards. In Spring quarter of 2009 at Cal Poly, two lab sessions for EE majors at the sophomore level were offered by the same instructor with an experimental group that designed and built a PCB for one of their circuit design experiments and a control group that performed all experiments using prototype boards. Data have been collected and analyzed for these four student groups. Results indicate the inclusion of the PCB module did not impact the student's ability to achieve any of the course or laboratory learning objectives. Though no statistically significant difference in student's motivation was found between the experimental group and the control group, the results
