Wireless sensor network (WSN) has been a hot research topic and widely deployed in many settings that require data acquisition, processing and communication on sensor devices equipped with a simple low powered microcontroller. This computing paradigm on long lasting operations of battery powered devices is resulted from state-of-the-art research efforts of computer science (CS) and computer engineering (CE) disciplines. This technology covers a variety of core CS and CE concepts ranging from computer architecture, operating systems, computer network, embedded systems, to software engineering. Its low cost and highly portable natures serve as a high cost effective learning lab platform for CS/CE undergraduate curricula. © 2010 IEEE.

In standard introductory electric circuits laboratories for electrical engineering (EE) majors and non-EE majors, prototype boards are typically used to construct and test electric circuits. Students typically do not learn how to design and manufacture Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) that are commonly used in more sophisticated design projects and other engineering applications. This paper will present the development and assessment of a PCB layout and manufacturing laboratory module that has been used in introductory electric circuits laboratories for EE and non-EE majors. The feasibility of integrating the new PCB layout and manufacturing module into the electric circuit course will be discussed. An experiment has been designed and conducted to assess the impact of the PCB module. A survey with questions from the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) supplemented with additional questions was used to measure students' motivation and the impact of the PCB module on student learning. In Winter quarter of 2009 at Cal Poly, two lab sessions for sophomore and junior non-EE engineering majors were taught by an instructor with an experimental group that designed a real PCB for one of their circuit design experiments and a control group that implemented all of the experiments using prototype boards. In Spring quarter of 2009 at Cal Poly, two lab sessions for EE majors at the sophomore level were offered by the same instructor with an experimental group that designed and built a PCB for one of their circuit design experiments and a control group that performed all experiments using prototype boards. Data have been collected and analyzed for these four student groups. Results indicate the inclusion of the PCB module did not impact the student's ability to achieve any of the course or laboratory learning objectives. Though no statistically significant difference in student's motivation was found between the experimental group and the control group, the results

Ontology makes traditional web service to be semantic web services, where semantic annotation can be employed to discover, reason and composite web services semantically. The construction of ontology is a key factor to implement semantic web service applications. Traditionally, ontology is constructed and maintained by domain experts with considerable effort, which is difficult to proceed in an engineering way and to reuse existing domain knowledge. In this paper, we propose to use the ER model, which is widely employed in database management, to construct domain ontology and semantic web services efficiently and effectively. © 2010 IEEE.

Senior project and/or capstone design courses are intended to provide a culminating design experience for students and to demonstrate their understanding of engineering knowledge and their ability to apply that knowledge to practical problems. It is expected that the quality and attributes of students' senior design projects can be used as a good measure of determining how well the curriculum prepares students to engage in engineering design as well as a measure of faculty teaching and student learning. This paper reports the results of a study designed to assess whether the new computer engineering curriculum implemented at Cal Poly over the previous five years has had a positive impact in preparing students for engineering design through measuring the quality and complexity of senior design projects. A randomized complete block design was used in the study. Ten senior projects each were randomly selected from the population of three groups: computer engineering senior projects completed in the 2002-2003 academic year, computer engineering senior projects completed in the 2007-2008 academic year, and electrical engineering senor projects completed in the 2007-2008 academic year. A senior project evaluation rubric was developed to assess the quality and complexity of the senior projects. Members from the computer engineering Industrial Advisory Board used the rubric to score the randomly selected senior projects. The scores assigned by the advisory board members were compared to the letter grades assigned by faculty advisors for these senior projects. The results of the analysis show that the overall quality of computer engineering senior projects improved from academic year 2002-2003 to academic year 2007-2008. However, there is a statistically significant difference in the overall senior project grades assigned between faculty advisors as compared to senior project scores assigned by the advisory board members. Is there consensus on what students should learn in CS2? Should they learn to use data structures, understand their specific implementation details, or both? Finally, has the computing education community's answer to the second question changed over time? In this paper, we begin to explore these questions based on an analysis of a key artifact instructors use to assess their students' performance: their final exams. Specifically, we look at two CS2 concepts as covered in those exams: stacks and hashtables. Our dataset includes 76 exams from 14 institutions around the world spanning 1973-2009 that were gathered as part of the DCER project, which is investigating the feasibility of a repository for computing education research data;to our knowledge this is a novel dataset in computing education. We begin by giving a general feel for this extensive dataset by describing the formats and dificulty level of the stack and hashtable questions and the computing skill students must possess to answer them. Next, we look at the questions' assessment of implementation knowledge versus interface or application knowledge. Despite a number of calls for modern CS2 to focus more on application than implementation, we found no evidence of such a trend. We note, however, that there are institutional difierences in the data, and that there are alternative ways in which application may be assessed in a course. Copyright 2010 ACM.

Many scientific or engineering applications perform reduction of sets of sequential data streams. If the core operator of the reduction is deeply pipelined, dependencies between the input data elements cause data hazards in the pipeline. To tackle this problem, we propose a multiple set variable length reduction design with low latency and high pipeline utilization in this paper. We prove the buffer size and execution time bounds, and then show its performance on practical multiple data set scenarios. We apply the proposed method to the Householder QR decomposition and compare its performance to other methods with superior results. The proposed design is implemented on FPGAs with resource usage and performance presented. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper we present an innovative online instant assessment system for interactive teaching and student's active and collaborative learning introductory Java programming in CS1. This system is designed to facilitate the interaction between the instructor and students, the collaboration between students, and enhance the student's “learning by doing” active learning model for the CS1 introductory programming course. This novel Java online virtual server engine provides not only a timely controlled environment for the synchronous delivery of interactive teaching and learning modules with instant assessment of student progress in classroom but it also provides a asynchronous off class self-study supplemental environment for student independent learning.

This paper describes the evolution of a software testing effort during a critical period for the flagship Mars science Laboratory rover project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Formal specification for post-run analysis of log files, using a domain-specific language, LogScope, replaced scripted real-time analysis. Log analysis addresses the key problems of on-the-fly approaches and cleanly separates specification and execution. Mining the test repository suggested the inadequacy of the scripted approach, and encouraged a partly engineer-driven development. LogScope development should hold insights for others facing the tight deadlines and reactionary nature of testing for critical projects. LogScope received a JPL Mariner Award for "improving productivity and quality of the MSL Flight software" and has been discussed as an approach for other flight missions. We note LogScope features that most contributed to ease of adoption and effectiveness. LogScope is general and can be applied to any software producing logs. © 2010 ACM.

Green computing has been an active research area which studies an efficient use of computing resources. It is a growing import subject that creates an urgent need to train next generation computer scientists or practitioners to think “green.” However, green computing has not yet been well taught in computer science (CS) or computer engineering programs (CE) programs, partly due to the lack of rooms to add a new course to those programs. Presented in this paper is an effort to reform core concepts of CS/CE to inculcate green computing in subjects such as algorithms, and operating systems.
