This report summarizes the proceedings of the one day BioSharing meeting held at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) 2010 conference in Boston, MA, USA This inaugural BioSharing event was hosted by the Genomic Standards Consortium as part of its M3 & BioSharing special interest group (SIG) workshop. The BioSharing event included invited talks from a range of community leaders and a panel discussion at the end of the day. The panel session led to the formal agreement among community leaders to join together to promote cross-community knowledge exchange and collaborations. A key focus of the newly formed Biosharing community will be linking up resources to promote real-world data sharing (virtuous cycle of data) and supporting compliance with data policies through the creation of a one-stop-portal of information. Scoped Bellman-Ford Geographic Routing for Large Dynamic Wireless Sensor Networks

Routing is a fundamental problem in wireless sensor networks. Most previous routing protocols are challenged when used in large dynamic networks as they suffer from either poor scalability or the void problem. In this paper, we propose a new geographic routing protocol, SBFR （Scoped Bellman-Ford Routing）, for large dynamic wireless sensor networks. The basic idea is that each node keeps a view scope of the network by computing distance vectors using the distributed Bellman- Ford method, and maintains a cost for routing to the sink. When forwarding a packet, a node picks the node with minimum cost in its routing table as a temporary landmark. While achieving good sealability, it also solves the void problem in an efficient manner through the combination of Bellman-Ford routing and cost-based geographic routing. Analytical and simulation results show that SBFR outperforms other routing protocols not only because of its robustness and scalability but also its practicality and simplicity.

Information forensics is one of the fast growing and very demanding courses in the information security area. This emerging discipline has an increasing demand to provide hands-on labs for students to gain real-world experience, The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we propose a new active and cooperative role-based learning model in design of the information forensics laboratory. This will allow the students to (i) actively play various roles individually in the crime investigation: (ii) cooperate in team on the case investigations: and (iii) identify effective Free Open Source software (FOSS) toolkits to conduct the investigations.. We developed lab modules for students to participate and also allow students themselves to propose and design lab projects to have other students involved. Second, we propose a complete FOSS Laboratory framework which is very accessible, affordable, and adoptable. Most of the labs are on-line accessible except some physical device-based lab such as information investigation on storage media. This lab is also expandable that the plug-in of new lab modules and updating existing modules are very easy. This labware itself is a FOSS project that professors and students everywhere can use the lab and contribute their related components to this project as well.

In dynamic collaborative driving, multiple vehicles coordinate their motion to optimise road usage using shared information. The basic prerequisites for a vehicle participating in dynamic collaborative driving are longitudinal and lateral control. This paper focuses on the lateral vehicle control on which higher-level manoeuvres such as entering or exiting a formation are based. Each vehicle involved is a composite nonlinear system powered by an internal combustion engine, equipped with automatic transmission, rolling on rubber tyres with hydraulic braking systems and steering system. A vehicle model is introduced which serves as the control system design platform. A lateral adaptive preview control system which uses Monte Carlo Reinforcement Learning (RL) is introduced. The results of the RL phase and the performance of the adaptive preview control system for a single automobile as well as the performance in a multi-vehicle platoon are presented. Binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) is the discrete binary version of particle swarm optimization (PSO) which is based on a metaphor of social behavior of birds and is a new kind of evolutionary computation paradigm. As BPSO has been successfully applied in a wide range of real-world application fields and some BPSO variants have been proposed, there is a need to guide these two aspects in theory. In this paper, experimental methods are developed to analyze the behavior of BPSO on trap functions and the influence of deceptiveness on BPSO's search behavior is presented. © 2008 IEEE.

The transportation field has for many years been dominated by engineers and other technical specialists. This article describes the Sustainable Mobility Learning Lab (SMLL), a Web-based tool designed to support classroom and university outreach activities to help initiate a more inclusive, nontechnical discussion about the role of transportation technology and human behavioral changes in sustainability. The SMLL includes both a general, "one-room schoolhouse" approach, in which Web users at a variety of levels can participate, along with classroom exercises for more targeted education. In our first runs with the project, the students were engaged with the material and reported positive experiences, and the Web-based format has allowed us to use the materials in a variety of outreach and open source settings.

In a wireless sensor network (WSN), the energy hole problem is a key factor which affects the lifetime of the networks. In a WSN with circular multi-hop deployment (modeled as concentric coronas), sensors in one corona have the same transmission range termed as the transmission range of this corona, and different coronas have different transmission ranges, which compose a list termed as transmission range list. Based on our improved corona model with levels, we propose that a right transmission range of each corona is the decision factor for optimizing network lifetime after nodes deployment. We prove that searching optimal transmission range lists is a multi-objective optimization problem (MOP), which is NP hard. We propose a centralized algorithm and a distributed algorithm to build the transmission range list for different node distributions. The two algorithms can not only reduce the searching complexity but also obtain results approximated to the optimal solution. Furthermore, the simulation results indicate that the network lifetime under our solution approximates to that ensured by the optimal list. Compared with existing algorithms, our solution can make the network lifetime be extended more than two times longer. © Copyright 2008 ICST.

Jane sees 50 compiler errors as a challenge. John sees them as defeat. Psychology research suggests these contrasting reactions may stem from students' self-theories, or their beliefs about themselves. Jane's reaction is characteristic of a growth mindset, the idea that with hard work and persistence, one's intelligence can increase. John's behavior is in line with a fixed mindset, the belief that individuals are born with a certain amount of intelligence and there is little they can do to change it. Numerous studies of self-theories have shown that students with a growth mindset perform better in academic settings;they cope more effectively with challenges, maintain higher grades, and are less susceptible to stereotype threat. In this study we attempted a "saying is believing" intervention to encourage CS1 students to adopt a growth mindset both in general and towards programming. Despite notable success of this type of intervention in a non-CS context, our results offered few statistically significant differences both from pre-survey to post-survey and between control and intervention groups. Further, the statistically significant results we did find differed in direction between institutions (some students exhibited more growth response, others less). We analyzed further evidence to explore possible confounding issues including whether our intervention even registered with students and how students interpreted the questions which we used to assess their self-theories.
