In this paper an automatic and effective method was proposed for mass segmentation in mammography. Based on the facts that mass edges are continuous and closed curves consisted of points which have larger gradient transformation, a plane fitting method and a dynamic programming technique were applied. The regions of interest (ROIs) used in this study were extracted from DDSM. The preliminary experimental results show that the segmentation algorithm performs well for various types of masses. In this paper, an application of Fuzzy Logic in the control of an autonomous parafoil surveillance platform is described. A unique methodology (Combs' method) was employed to reduce the common problem of 'exponential rule expansion' encountered in Fuzzy Control Systems. The use of this method also simplified the tuning process of the fuzzy system by requiring the optimization of only the membership functions and not the rule base. Modularity and simplicity of design were further enhanced by adopting a layered fuzzy logic architecture. The fuzzy system was optimized over a wide range of simulated flight conditions, providing a simple yet robust means of controlling the vehicle. Hardware limitations in terms of memory, computational speed and cost were critical factors driving the need for a simple yet robust control algorithm. This autonomous parafoil, developed under a grant from the Office of Naval Research, was designed to follow a predetermined flight pattern from altitudes of 350 meters or more down to the ground. Flight tests of a rocket-launched prototype device and simulation in the Matlab/Simulink software environment have verified that this fuzzy logic control method performs to the required specifications. Recently SQL Injection Attack (SIA) has become a major threat to Web applications. Via carefully crafted user input, attackers can expose or manipulate the back-end database of a Web application. This paper proposes the construction and outlines the design of a static analysis framework (called SAFELI) for identifying SIA vulnerabilities at compile time. SAFELI statically inspects MSIL bytecode of an *** Web application, using symbolic execution. At each hotspot that submits SQL query, a hybrid constraint solver is used to find out the corresponding user input that could lead to breach of information security. Once completed, SAFELI has the future potential to discover more delicate SQL injection attacks than black-box Web security inspection tools. © 2007 IEEE.

In July 2007 Carnegie Mellon university (Carnegie Mellon®) hosted its sixth annual offering of the Information Assurance Capacity Building Program (IACBP). The goal of the intensive in-residence summer program is to help build Information Assurance education and research capacity at minority-serving universities. Since 2002, in the first 5 editions, over 45 faculty have participated in the month-long intensive program, which has resulted in the development of a number of new offerings at partner schools, including updates to existing courses, new courses, certificate programs and degree programs. Carnegie Mellon has also supported regional information assurance symposiums and mini-boot camps, additional information assurance grants, and a number of research projects and publications involving faculty and students at partner schools, as well as multi-institution collaborative centers. Throughout the planning and implementation the Carnegie Mellon IACBP goal has been on choosing faculty and university programs that are committed to information assurance curriculum development, teaching and research. As a result, a high level of success has been achieved by faculty and their programs. One example of this success is california state polytechnic university, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), which became a designated Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Information Assurance in 2005. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the success of the IACBP and the experience of Cal Poly Pomona and subsequent designation as a CAE. A symposium recently brought back graduates of the IACBP to share outcomes. A recent survey was also conducted of IACBP attendees to document IA education, training and outreach activities. The results provide strong evidence of Carnegie Mellon IACBP successes. © 2007 EDSIG.

Data gathering is a major function of many applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The most important issue in designing a data gathering algorithm is how to save energy of sensor nodes while meeting the requirement of applications/users such as sensing area coverage. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical clustering protocol for long-lived sensor network. EAP achieves a good performance in terms of lifetime by minimizing energy consumption for in-network communications and balancing the energy load among all nodes. EAP introduces a new clustering parameter for cluster head election, which can better handle the heterogeneous energy capacities. Furthermore, it also introduces a simple but efficient approach, namely intra-cluster coverage to cope with the area coverage problem. We evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol using a simple temperature sensing application. Simulation results show that our protocol significantly outperforms LEACH and HEED in terms of network lifetime and the amount of data gathered.

This paper reports on a pilot project that incorporated small empirical studies in three industry short courses. These laboratory experiments were one component of a larger leveled study on the effects of test-driven development (TDD) on internal software quality. The approach is proposed to have pedagogical value to student-developers by improving their understanding and appreciation for empirical evidence, to instructors by providing feedback through surveys and exercises, and to the community at large by reporting results of the studies. Pre-experiment surveys in the three pilot experiments revealed large differences in programmer opinions of TDD. Possible correlations to development environment and programmer experience will be proposed. Post-experiment surveys revealed improvements in programmer opinions of TDD following the experiment exercises. Crafting sufficiently small but interesting assignments proved to be challenging. Few complete solutions were submitted and some developers were unwilling to submit their partial solutions. Positive observations will be made regarding the use of experiments in short courses. For instance, participating in the study encourages analytical thinking, prompts developers to evaluate alternative approaches, and instills the value of empirical evidence. Ethical concerns regarding threats to validity are raised and addressed. The authors find that ethical considerations not only support performing such studies, but encourage it as the duty of software professionals.

We propose a new texture segmentation algorithm to improve the segmentation of boundary areas in the image. In some applications such as medical image segmentation, an exact segmentation on the boundary areas is needed. But satisfactory segmentation results cannot be obtained on the boundary areas among different texture classes with some existing texture segmentation algorithms in our preliminary experiments. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps. The first step is to apply the K-view-datagram segmentation method to the image to obtain an initial segmentation; the second step is to find a boundary set which includes the pixels with high probabilities to be misclassified by the initial K-view-datagram segmentation; the third step is to apply a modified K-views template method with a small scanning window to the boundary set to refine the segmentation. The evaluation of the proposed algorithm was carried out with the benchmark images randomly taken from Brodatz Gallery and the ultrasonic prostate images provided by the hospitals. Initial experimental results show that the concept of boundary set defined in this paper can catch most of misclassified pixels of the output of the initial K-View-datagram segmentation. The new segmentation algorithm gives high segmentation accuracy and classifies the boundary areas better than the existing algorithms
