Delta estimation uses changes to old projects to estimate new projects. Delta estimation assumes that new costs can be extrapolated from old projects. In this study, we show that in certain real-world data sets, there exists attributes where this assumption does not hold. We define here an automatic method to find which attributes can be safely used for delta estimation. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Despite the widespread availability of software effort estimation models (e.g. COCOMO [2], Price-S, SEER-SEM, SLIM), most managers still estimate new projects by extrapolating from old projects [3, 5, 7]. In this delta method, the cost of the next project is the cost of the last project multiplied by some factors modeling the difference between old and new projects [2]. Delta estimation is simple, fast, and best of all, can take full advantage of local costing information. However delta estimation fails when the experience base (the old projects) can not be extrapolated to the new projects. Previously [10], we have shown that for a set of NASA projects, delta estimation would usually fail since most of the features and coefficients of the learned model vary wildly across sub-samples of the training data. In that prior work, no solution was offered for this problem. Here, we offer a solution and report the results of experiments with feature subset selection (FSS) and extrapolation. FSS methods are usually assessed via the mean change in model performance. However, as shown below, FSS can significantly reduce the variance as well. Hence, FSS should be routinely used in cost estimation. Since there are benefits in intelligently subtracting model features, our results should stop the trend in the effort modeling community of continually adding to the number of features in a model in order to improve estimation performance. We propose a new hardware architecture to let transport-oriented Internet traffic bypass the Web server. This architecture balances the control function of a general-purpose computer with the optimized transport provided by an embedded system pipeline from the storage system to the network. It separates control path from data path for more efficient data transport. Therefore, the architecture not only maintains the advantages of traditional servers where control and data processing are done flexibly, but also provides optimized data I/O processing. More importantly it keeps majority of processing-oriented software and algorithms on a general-purpose server. Preliminary analysis is presented to demonstrate the features and performance of the architecture.

Dynamic Power Management (DPM) entails employing strategies that yield acceptable trade-off between power/energy usage and their performance penalties. These include heuristic shutdown policies, prediction-based shutdown policies, multiple voltage scaling and stochastic modeling based policy optimization. On the other hand, Architectural techniques for power savings include application specific techniques for multi-media hardware systems, and generic techniques like clock gating, on-line profiling based monitoring and control etc. Other paradigms of architectures such as network on chip (NoCs) target power optimization as well. Protocol level power optimization methods include generic techniques employed in wireless standard protocols, as well as techniques specific to multi-media traffic. DPM strategies get increasingly sophisticated due to improved power manageability of hardware components. In this context, there is a positive feedback in action. Power management techniques show the potential for power savings, and this pushes hardware developers to support more advanced (finer grained and lower overhead) power management modes. In this tutorial, we will provide an overview of three main issues in three segments, namely, architecture level, system level and protocol level techniques of power minimization and management, how they influence each other. However, we will not concentrate on low power VLSI techniques.

Active Queue Management (AQM) is an effective method to enhance congestion control, and to achieve tradeoff between link utilization and delay. The de facto standard, Random Early Detection (RED), and most of its variants use queue length as congestion indicator to trigger packet dropping. As an extension of RED, a novel AQM algorithm, called NPI-RED, is proposed in this paper. The NPI-RED is based on a novel proportional and integral controller, which not only considers the average queue length at the current time slot, but also takes into consideration the past average queue lengths within a round trip time. We provide a guideline for the selection of the feedback gains for TCP/RED system to stabilize the dynamics, make the queue length converge at a certain target and improve the network performance. We present the condition of asymptotic stability for the model in terms of the average queue length, by using a method, in which we construct a Routh table associated with the characteristic polynomial. Based on the stability condition and control gains selection method, the extensive simulation results by ns2 demonstrate that the NPI-RED algorithm outperforms than the existed AQM schemes in robustness, drop probability and stability. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

The next generation of mobile systems with multimedia processing capabilities and wireless connectivity will be increasingly deployed in highly dynamic and distributed environments for multimedia playback and delivery (e.g. video streaming, multimedia conferencing). The challenge is to meet the heavy resource demands of multimedia applications under the stringent energy, computational, and bandwidth constraints of mobile systems, while constantly adapting to the global state changes of the distributed environment. In this paper, we present our initiatives under the FORGE framework to address the issue of delivering high quality multimedia content in mobile environments. In order to cope with the resource intensive nature of multimedia applications and dynamically changing global state (e.g. node mobility, network congestion), an end-to-end approach to QoS aware power optimization is required. We present a framework for coordinating energy optimizing strategies across various layers of system implementation and functionality and discuss techniques that can be employed to achieve energy gains for mobile multimedia systems.

COCONUT calibrates effort estimation models using an exhaustive search over the space of calibration parameters in a Cocomo I model. This technique is much simpler than other effort estimation method yet yields PRED levels comparable to those other methods. Also, it does so with less project data and fewer attributes (no scale factors). However, a comparison between COCONUT and other methods is complicated by differences in the experimental methods used for effort estimation. A review of those experimental methods concludes that software effort estimation models should be calibrated to local data using incremental holdout (not jack knife) studies, combined with randomization and hypothesis testing, repeated a statistically significant number of times.

The task of providing an optimal analysis of the state of the atmosphere requires the development of dynamic data-driven systems (d3 as) that efficiently integrate the observational data and the models. In this paper we discuss fundamental aspects of nonlinear ensemble data assimilation applied to atmospheric chemical transport models. We formulate autoregressive models for the background errors and show how these models are capable of capturing flow dependent correlations. Total energy singular vectors describe the directions of maximum errors growth and are used to initialize the ensembles. We highlight the challenges encountered in the computation of singular vectors in the presence of stiff chemistry and propose solutions to overcome them. Results for a large scale simulation of air pollution in East Asia illustrate the potential of nonlinear ensemble techniques to assimilate chemical observations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Distributed systems commonly replicate data to enhance system dependability. In such systems, a logical update on a data item results in a physical update on a number of copies. The synchronization and communication required to keep the copies of replicated data consistent introduces a delay when operations are performed. In time-constrained systems or systems distributed over a bandwidth-constrained area, such operational delays generally prove unacceptable. Asynchronous data replication is commonly used to mitigate these delays. We look to develop a general solution for the introduction of an adaptive data replication scheduler to optimize asynchronous replications based on a user-developed priority model in overloaded situations. The solution uses a multi-layer perceptron neural network to mimic the behavior of a historically optimal scheduler through functional approximation with its evaluation through simulation.
