Gabor filter is a widely used feature extraction method, especially in image texture analysis. The selection of optimal filter parameters is usually problematic and unclear. This study analyzes the filter design essentials and proposes two different methods to segment the Gabor filtered multi-channel images. The first method integrates Gabor filters with labeling algorithm for edge detection and object segmentation. The second method uses the K-means clustering with simulated annealing for image segmentation of a stack of Gabor filtered multi-channel images. Various experiments with real images demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches. Copyright 2004 ACM.

This paper proposes a high-speed communication module for a Linux cluster file system using M-VIA. One of the purposes of a cluster file system (CFS) is to provide high I/O bandwidth by parallelizing I/O operations. In CFS, files are divided into small blocks and stored on multiple nodes. Hence, a CFS demands a great deal of data to be transferred among nodes, which means that the overall performance of a CFS is primarily dependent on the bandwidth between cluster nodes. However, software overheads caused by the intervention of the Operating system (OS) prevent applications from fully exploiting the bandwidth of the underlying network. So, user-level network protocols such as VIA are considered suitable for interconnects of clustering systems. The communication module presented in this paper utilizes Modula-VIA (M-VIA), which is one of the VIA implementations freely available on Linux system. As more and more knowledge and information becomes available through computers, a critical capability of systems supporting knowledge management is the classification of documents into categories that are meaningful to the user. In a step beyond the use of keywords, we developed a system that analyzes the sentences contained in unstructured or semi-structured documents, and utilizes an ontology reflecting the domain knowledge for a semantic classification of the documents. An experimental system has been implemented for the analysis of small documents in combination with a limited ontology;an extension to larger sets of documents and extended ontologies, together with an application to practical tasks, is the focus of ongoing work. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The end-to-end delay of packets in data streams is characterized with emphasis on effects due to cross traffic, sending rate and packet size. Measurements indicate that modeling delay of a packet stream with high sending rates, as a fraction of bandwidth, is difficult due to the correlations among the delay values. The correlations among inter-packet gaps (IPG) at these rates, however, are negligible. At lower sending rates, the delay correlations are negligible and the distribution of delay can be used as a delay model. We exploit the relation between delay and IPG to show that end-to-end delay can be approximated by a Markov process. Thus, a complete solution is presented for modeling delay for all sending rates. Further, a correlation estimation model is provided for delay and IPG values.

The current debate about the teaching of data structures is hampered because, as a community, we usually debate specifics about data structure implementations and libraries, when the real level of disagreement remains implicit - the intent behind our teaching. This paper presents a phenomenographic study of the intent of CS educators for teaching data structures in CS2. Based on interviews with computer science educators and analysis of CS literature, we identified five categories of intent: developing transferable thinking, improving students' programming skills, knowing "what's under the hood", knowledge of software libraries, and component thinking. The CS community needs to first debate at the level of these categories before moving to more specific issues. This study also serves as an example of how phenomenographic analysis can be used to inform debate on syllabus design in general. Copyright 2004 ACM.

This paper describes a novel multi-rate multicast congestion control scheme based on the well-known proportional plus integrative control technique, where the control parameters can be designed to ensure the stability of the control loop In terms of source rate. The congestion controller is located at the next upstream nodes of multicast receivers and has explicit rate (ER) algorithm to regulate the rate of the receivers. We further analyze the theoretical aspects of the proposed algorithm, show how the control mechanism can be used to design a controller to support many-to-many multi-rate multicast transmission based on ER feedback, and verify its agreement with simulations in the case of bottleneck link appearing in a multicast tree. Simulation results show the efficiency of our scheme in terms of the system stability, high link utilizations, fast response, scalability, high throughput and fairness.

This paper reports on user interface design and evaluation for a mobile, outdoor, augmented reality (AR) application. This novel system, called the battlefield augmented reality system (BARS), supports information presentation and entry for situation awareness in an urban war fighting setting. To our knowledge, this is the first time extensive use of usability engineering has been systematically applied to development of a real-world AR system. Our BARS team has applied a cost-effective progression of usability engineering activities from the very beginning of BARS development. We discuss how we first applied cycles of structured expert evaluations to BARS user interface development, employing user interface mockups representing occluded (non-visible) objects. Then we discuss how results of these evaluations informed our subsequent user-based statistical evaluations and formative evaluations, and present these evaluations and their outcomes. Finally, we discuss how and why this sequence of types of evaluation is cost-effective.

FORGE brings together a number of advances in architectural modeling, software architecture and distributed/real-time systems to build a platform that provides two fundamental capabilities for distributed, real time, and embedded (DRE) system development: (a) conceptualization and coding of the design knowledge through collaborative specifications that are inherently matched to distributed solutions; and (b) exploitation of the design knowledge across all development phases for the DRE systems. Our proof-of-concept FORGE prototype is built upon collaborative specifications captured by extensions to the message sequence charts (MSCs) that drive the customization of CompOSEIQ middleware services and generate node-architecture specific code through descriptions of the architecture and resources captured using ADL and RDL respectively.

We consider the type inference problems in a compositional design environment where the components are automatically instantiated from pre-existing C++-based intellectual property (IP) libraries. We present a component integration language based on scripting for design specification. Our focus is the architectural aspects in the specification that use aggregation - as opposed to the more commonly used inheritance - for composition of components. Our approach simplifies architectural specification by employing a type inference and type management environment. We show that the type inference problem is NP-complete. We present a heuristic based on code generation and parameterization to solve the type inference for IP selection in our C++-based composition environment. We have implemented the composition and type management in the BALBOA framework. The results show the utility of our approach.
