GPT-4 (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer 4) is often heralded as a leading commercial AI offering, sparking debates over its potential as a steppingstone toward Artificial General Intelligence. But does it possess consciousness? This paper investigates this key question using the nine qualitative measurements of the Building Blocks theory. GPT-4's design, architecture, and implementation are compared to each of the building blocks of consciousness to determine whether it has achieved the requisite milestones to be classified as conscious or, if not, how close to consciousness GPT-4 is. Our assessment is that, while GPT-4 in its native configuration is not currently conscious, current technological research and development is sufficient to modify GPT-4 to have all the building blocks of consciousness. Consequently, we argue that the emergence of a conscious AI model is plausible in the near term. The paper concludes with a comprehensive discussion of the ethical implications and societal ramifications of engineering conscious AI entities. © 2024 World Scientific Publishing Company.

IoT devices rely on authentication mechanisms to render secure message *** data transmission,scalability,data integrity,and processing time have been considered challenging aspects for a system constituted by IoT *** application of physical unclonable functions(PUFs)ensures secure data transmission among the internet of things(IoT)devices in a simplified network with an efficient time-stamped *** paper proposes a secure,lightweight,cost-efficient reinforcement machine learning framework(SLCR-MLF)to achieve decentralization and security,thus enabling scalability,data integrity,and optimized processing time in IoT *** has been integrated into SLCR-MLF to improve the security of the cluster head node in the IoT platform during transmission by providing the authentication service for device-to-device *** IoT network gathers information of interest from multiple cluster members selected by the proposed *** addition,the software-defined secured(SDS)technique is integrated with SLCR-MLF to improve data integrity and optimize processing time in the IoT *** analysis shows that the proposed framework outperforms conventional methods regarding the network’s lifetime,energy,secured data retrieval rate,and performance *** enabling the proposed framework,number of residual nodes is reduced to 16%,energy consumption is reduced by up to 50%,almost 30%improvement in data retrieval rate,and network lifetime is improved by up to 1000 msec.

The rapid development of 5G/6G and AI enables an environment of Internet of Everything(IoE)which can support millions of connected mobile devices and applications to operate smoothly at high speed and low ***,these massive devices will lead to explosive traffic growth,which in turn cause great burden for the data transmission and content *** challenge can be eased by sinking some critical content from cloud to *** this case,how to determine the critical content,where to sink and how to access the content correctly and efficiently become new *** work focuses on establishing a highly efficient content delivery framework in the IoE *** particular,the IoE environment is re-constructed as an end-edge-cloud collaborative system,in which the concept of digital twin is applied to promote the *** on the digital asset obtained by digital twin from end users,a content popularity prediction scheme is firstly proposed to decide the critical content by using the Temporal Pattern Attention(TPA)enabled Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM)***,the prediction results are input for the proposed caching scheme to decide where to sink the critical content by using the Reinforce Learning(RL)***,a collaborative routing scheme is proposed to determine the way to access the content with the objective of minimizing *** experimental results indicate that the proposed schemes outperform the state-of-the-art benchmarks in terms of the caching hit rate,the average throughput,the successful content delivery rate and the average routing overhead.

Redundant Transmission Control Algorithm for Information-Centric Vehicular IoT Networks

Vehicular Adhoc Networks(VANETs)enable vehicles to act as mobile nodes that can fetch,share,and disseminate information about vehicle safety,emergency events,warning messages,and passenger ***,the continuous dissemination of information fromvehicles and their one-hop neighbor nodes,Road Side Units(RSUs),and VANET infrastructures can lead to performance degradation of VANETs in the existing hostcentric IP-based ***,Information Centric Networks(ICN)are being explored as an alternative architecture for vehicular communication to achieve robust content distribution in highly mobile,dynamic,and errorprone *** ICN-based Vehicular-IoT networks,consumer mobility is implicitly supported,but producer mobility may result in redundant data transmission and caching inefficiency at intermediate vehicular *** paper proposes an efficient redundant transmission control algorithm based on network coding to reduce data redundancy and accelerate the efficiency of information *** proposed protocol,called Network Cording Multiple Solutions Scheduling(NCMSS),is receiver-driven collaborative scheduling between requesters and information sources that uses a global parameter expectation deadline to effectively manage the transmission of encoded data packets and control the selection of information *** results for the proposed NCMSS protocol is demonstrated to analyze the performance of ICN-vehicular-IoT networks in terms of caching,data retrieval delay,and end-to-end application *** end-to-end throughput in proposed NCMSS is 22%higher(for 1024 byte data)than existing solutions whereas delay in NCMSS is reduced by 5%in comparison with existing solutions.

Residual diverse ensemble for long-tailed multi-label text classification

Long-tailed multi-label text classification aims to identify a subset of relevant labels from a large candidate label set, where the training datasets usually follow long-tailed label distributions. Many of the previous studies have treated head and tail labels equally, resulting in unsatisfactory performance for identifying tail labels. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel learning method that combines arbitrary models with two steps. The first step is the “diverse ensemble” that encourages diverse predictions among multiple shallow classifiers, particularly on tail labels, and can improve the generalization of tail *** second is the “error correction” that takes advantage of accurate predictions on head labels by the base model and approximates its residual errors for tail labels. Thus, it enables the “diverse ensemble” to focus on optimizing the tail label performance. This overall procedure is called residual diverse ensemble(RDE). RDE is implemented via a single-hidden-layer perceptron and can be used for scaling up to hundreds of thousands of labels. We empirically show that RDE consistently improves many existing models with considerable performance gains on benchmark datasets, especially with respect to the propensity-scored evaluation ***, RDE converges in less than 30 training epochs without increasing the computational overhead.

Flood forecasting methods based on deep learning rely on a large number of observational data, and are facing serious challenges in areas with scarce data. Aiming at the problems of flood inundated range prediction in areas with scarce data, this paper proposes a flood inundated range prediction method based on spatial reduction reconstruction (SRR) and improved deep attention neural network (Informer) to reduce the data requirements of the two core parts of water level simulation and spatial modeling. It alleviates the problem of insufficient observational data for flood inundation range prediction in areas with scarce data. This method obtains the dependency relationship of long time series data through Informer model, and inserts the built-in input selection layer to reduce the number of parameters in the model, reducing the data requirement of water level simulation. At the same time, the SRR algorithm is used to select the representative locations that are easy to be inundated in the basin, which reduces the number of locations required for spatial modeling of flood inundation range and the corresponding data requirements. The experimental results show that this method can improve the accuracy of flood inundation range prediction and speed up the efficiency of the model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Originally presented in previous work to capture the set of fundamental elements of the UML state machine specification, Common Declarative Language (CDL) provides a model that can aid in the validation and verification of requirements. In this paper we target two objectives: First, we extend CDL by addressing one of the advanced concepts of the UML state machine specification, namely the notion of orthogonality which allows complex machine behavior through parallel state configurations. Second, we complement previous work by focusing on how CDL can serve as a platform for the representation of a state machine, how the language can be deployed for a model transformation where the initial machine (containing composite and/or orthogonal states) can be flattened into a model whose formal definition we provide, and finally how the CDL can be deployed to support interoperability among text-to-UML drawing tools [11]. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

A Fast Algorithm for Computing the Deficiency Number of a Mahjong Hand

The tile-based multiplayer game Mahjong is widely played in Asia and has also become increasingly popular worldwide. Face-to-face or online, each player begins with a hand of 13 tiles and players draw and discard tiles in turn until they complete a winning hand. An important notion in Mahjong is the deficiency number(*** number in Japanese Mahjong) of a hand, which estimates how many tile changes are necessary to complete the hand into a winning hand. The deficiency number plays an essential role in major decision-making tasks such as selecting a tile to discard. This paper proposes a fast algorithm for computing the deficiency number of a Mahjong hand. Compared with the baseline algorithm, the new algorithm is usually 100 times faster and, more importantly,respects the agent's knowledge about available tiles. The algorithm can be used as a basic procedure in all Mahjong variants by both rule-based and machine learning-based Mahjong AI.

With the rapid development of intelligent systems, Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) have shown unique advantages in solving complex decision-making problems. Particularly in the field of Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL), Multiple agents can decompose complex tasks, process information and make decisions in parallel, share experiences, accelerate the learning process, and significantly improve decision quality and efficiency. This paper explores the theoretical underpinnings of MARL and its application to collaborative decision-making and analyzes practical cases in areas such as transportation system management, automated manufacturing, and smart grids. Additionally, it addresses challenges in strategy coordination, handling dynamic environments, and improving learning efficiency. This paper proposes several optimization strategies and introduces reservoir group optimization experiments. By comparing with single-agent algorithms, it verifies that multi-agent systems can coordinate multiple reservoirs, enhance convergence speed, and achieve higher power generation efficiency, demonstrating better practical application prospects. Furthermore, the future trends of MARL, including technological advancements, potential applications, and challenges, are discussed. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
